1) Introduction

My thanks to Carsten Hensel, Zsolt Korpics, Gabor Szamosközi, Jonathan Berry, Miklos Orso, Mihajlo Savic, Arthur Brameld, Ravi Abhyankar, Steve Laios, Vladimir Dvorkovich, Silvio Danailov, Mehrdad Pahlevanzadeh, Dominique Primel, Luiz Roberto Da Costa, Mig Greengard, Csaba Jergler, Mikhail Golubev, Thomas Henrich, Jakub Fuksik, John Fernandez, George Mirijanian, Cecil Rosner, Petur Jonsson and everyone else who helped with the issue.

Alexander Morozevich went on to finish the Russian Team Championships with a win to take his performance to around 2900. Morozevich finished in 7th place in the chess Oscars for 2003. Voted on by journalists and fellow professionals the winner was Viswanathan Anand who clearly did have the best 2003. I imagine a contender for a high finish next year is Magnus Carlsen who started 2004 with a crushing victory in the Wijk aan Zee C tournament. Carlsen born in November 1990 made his final GM norm in Dubai and is the second youngest to achieve that mark and currently the youngest GM. Young players tend to attract hype and Carlsen hasn't been an exception but I've been as impressed by his play as any of the young players that have emerged in recent years.

Hope you enjoy this issue.

Mark

2) Russian Chess League Finals

The Russian Chess League finals took place in the hotel Dagomys in Sochi 20th-28th April 2004. Alexander Morozevich finished with 6.5/8 and a 2900 ELO performance. His team Tomsk 400 Yukos won the event with 15/18 match points conceding three draws including one in the last round. In addition according to the website there was a rapid event but I don't have the date or results from it and will wait until I get that before considering publishing those games.

I've repeated the games as I understand the event was in Sochi not Dagomys which is simply the name of the hotel.

19) Kramnik Chess Exhibition

Vladimir Kramnik played a chess exhibition on Sunday 2nd May 2004 in the Art and Exhibition Hall of the Federal Republic of Germany, Bonn.

Kramnik played a simultaneous exhibition against 20 opponents including members of the German national women's team: Elisabeth Pähtz, Tina Mietzner, Leonie Helm and Anne Czäczine. He drew just one game.

Carsten Hensel reports: The result was 19,5:0,5. So nobody was able to win the 50,000 Euro Jackpot provided by Deutsche Bank for beating Kramnik.

600 Spectators in a very nice playing hall at Bonn "Bundeskunsthalle" (see attached Foto - made before the event). 5,000 Euros for SOS Childrens' Village (three participants via Ebay). One player out of this 3 paid more than 2,000 Euros for the game, he got the draw. The duration of the simul was exactly 4 hours, though it was a very strong one as you will see in the attached list. Ten players had more than 2000 ELO (see attachment) including germanies national team (girls) and incl. U18 World Champion Elisabeth Pahtz. He won them all.

It was really a good show and a fantastic promotion for chess. Im pretty sure that never before a simul was honoured by so many spectators.

The Event was organised by the Bundeskunsthalle (Art and Exhibition Hall of the Federal Republic of Germany) and sponsored by Deutsche Bank.

24) Chess Politics

There were a number of announcements this week.

Firstly the Women`s World Chess Championship has been moved to Elista, Kalmykia, Russia and will take place 21st May - 8th June 2004. The event seems still to be bankrolled by the Adjara region but the continuing and escalating crisis there made this move inevitable.

News: http://www.fide.com

Secondly Ruslan Ponomariov gave a press conference in Kiev. He has proposed a tournament with six players: Kramnik, Leko, Kasparov, Anand, Ponomariov and the winner of Libya event, to produce the unified world champion.

Info from press conference in Russian is at: http://mignews.com.ua/sport/ukraine/118014.html http://www.from-ua.com/news/40910e791e6bd/

Press release in Ukrainian is at: http://www.chesspage.kiev.ua

He was supported by the Ukrainian Chess Federation:

We state the support of the initiative of FIDE World Champion Mr. Ruslan Ponomariov regarding to the match-tournament for absolute world champion title, in which could take part the best chessplayers: Ruslan Ponomariov, Garry Kasparov, Vladimir Kramnik, Viswanathan Anand, Peter Leko and the winner of a tournament which will take place in Tripoli (Libya) and Valetta (Malta) from 18 June to 13 July 2004. The world history of chess development confirms the right approach to decide crisis situations. The realization of the offered version will do the real consolidation of the chess world on the sport basis and provide equal conditions for best chess-players. We are confident that the initiative of FIDE World Champion Ruslan Ponomariov will find support from the chess world and stimulate for development of this unique and famous in all the world play. M. Kostenko 29th of April 2004.

25) Chess Oscar 2003

The Russian Chess Magazine "64" organised voting amongst players, journalists, organisers and other experts for the best player of 2003. There were 358 variants of the best 10s world by experts from 65 countries. Anand won a clear first place with his victory in Wijk aan Zee and multiple rapid victories clearly weighing heavily. He was first on 2/3rds of the lists and left off just 7 lists. In second place was Peter Svidler who had steady success throughout 2003 and finished it as World number 4. In 3rd was Vladimir Kramnik whose best result was 2nd at Linares on tie-break from Peter Leko, they both had the same score. In 4th place was Kasparov who played only one serious tournament, Linares where he finished 3rd, a couple of high profile computer exhibitions which he drew and the European Club Cup (where he probably played his most exciting chess) it was hardly a classic year for him. In 5th was Leko, a little low for my taste after his win in Linares.

Further details in Russian: http://www.64.ru

Anand also won online voting amongst fans at http://oscar.fide.com

The Worlds of Chess Champions exhibition contains items including Egyptian chess pieces, commemorative stamps, autographed material, rare books and original manuscripts.

The event is in Cleveland OH. The Cleveland Public Library’s John G. White Chess and Checkers Collection is currently exhibiting an installation titled, Worlds of Chess Champions. This temporary exhibition is located in the third floor exhibition hall of the Main Building, 325 Superior Ave., N.E. The Library exhibition is free and open to the public. Paid parking is available on Rockwell, one block north of Superior Ave.

Worlds of Chess Champions puts chess into context through the lives of chess experts, authors, and champions. This exhibition sets the historical stage of chess champions from the 19th Century to the present. To illustrate the context of chess in the world, the earliest items displayed feature chess pieces from Egypt dating back to 1300 B.C. Other early items on display from the John G. White Chess and Checkers Collection include original manuscripts from the 16th, 17th, and 18th Centuries. Other rare and interesting items include a death mask photograph of an early 19th-century player, commemorative chess stamps, hand-written letters by and about world-famous chess champions, autographed material, and published books by chess champions.

Some of the materials in Worlds of Chess Champions have never before been exhibited. The John G. White Chess and Checkers Collection is the world’s largest and most comprehensive chess collection. The collection contains chess sets and pieces as well as material related to chess. Many stamps commemorating chess champions are in the exhibition. Newspaper and magazine clippings, chess championship programs, score sheets from games, and other rare items will be on display through June 12, 2004.
