A huge week of chess with almost all the top players in the world competing. Garry Kasparov won the Reykjavik rapid after surviving a scare in game one against Magnus Carlsen of their round 1 clash, he defeated Nigel Short in the final. The Amber tournament is taking place in Monaco with Kramnik and Anand and many others. The 5th Karpov tournament is taking place in the small village of Poikovsky. A nice event which has taken over the village, it is in the old Russian traditions and even has official songs to commemorate the event.
Hope you enjoy this issue.

Garry Kasparov beat Nigel Short in the final of the Reykjavik Rapid tournament which took place 17th-21st March 2004. Time rate 25mins+5 seconds. Rapid playoff games 5 mins+3 seconds per move. Short looked to have good winning chances in game one but seemed Kasparov turned it round to win. Game two was drawn.
The format of the tournament was rather unusual. The 16 players played a blitz tournament, 5 3 on the 17th of March. The result determined the seeding. An idea taken from Formula 1. The first round started on the 18th, The 1st seeded player played nr. 16, nr. 2 avs. 15 etc. Time allotted is 25 5. In case of a tie there was a sudden death game. All rapid games available. Sadly almost all the blitz games seem to be lost.
The main sponsor of the Reyjavik rapid 2004 was Atlantsal.

13th Amber Blindfold and Rapid Chess Tournament takes place in the Monte Carlo Grand Hotel in Monaco March 20th - April 1st 2004. It is sponsored by creator of the event Mr. J.J. van Oosterom. Prize-fund is Euro 193,250.
Every day the grandmasters play one Rapid game and one Blindfold game, of around one hour per game. The Blindfold games they play on a computer. For the players only an empty chess board is visible on the screen. With the mouse or the keyboard they can make a move, which will then appear on the screens of both players. After they have confirmed their move, the players see the move disappear and the clock of the opponent starts running. Various monitors in the playing room show the course of the game, which is perfectly visible for the arbiter and the audience, but not for the grandmasters. Free days: 24 March and 29 March. Play takes place 1.30-8.00 pm.

The 5th Karpov Tournament takes place in Poikovsky 17th-26th of March 2004. Poikovsky is a village Poikovsky in the Nefteyugansky region, the west of Siberia. The event will be the strongest robin tournament in Russia this year. It carries the name Anatoly Karpov and its power approaches the Linares, Dortmund and Wijk-aan-Zee events. This year the average rating of the participants is 2676 (category XVIII), and the organisers promise that next year the event will be stronger. Rest day 21st March but Aleksandrov-Sokolov (9) was played on that day as Ivan Sokolov has to leave early.

Tigran Petrosian Memorial Tournament 2004 took place in Stepanakert, Karabakh March 8th-18th 2004. Total prize fund was US$12,100, with a first prize $4000. The event celebrated what would have been Petrosian 75th birthday. The winner was Karen Asrian. Esam Ghaem Maghami - Karen Asrian round 8 was 0-1 default and turned out to be pretty key in determining the final winner.
The event was very diplomatically controversial. Karabakh's status is under dispute between Azerbaijan and Armenia. It will be up to FIDE to decide whether to rate the event and that seems unlikely.
I've gone with Azerbaijan as the country in the PGN section simply as this seems to be the official FIDE line.

The V Internet Chess Tournament "Ciudad de Dos Hermanas" took place on Internet Chess Club (ICC), 6th-14th March, 2004. IM Michael Rahal (EDAMI, Barcelona) reports:
As last year, the playing system was as follows: twelve 9-round Swiss qualifiers using the Fischer System playing rate: 8 minutes + 2 seconds. Qualifiers were held twice a day (from March 6th to 11th). March 12th was a rest day, and the finals were held on March 13th-14th. The 12 qualifier winners plus the 20 best scores qualified to the 32 KO final. The event was held on the Internet Chess Club (www.chessclub.com) has held the annual Internet Chess Tournament “Ciudad de Dos Hermanas” (Spain). This event has consolidated as the most important Internet tournament in the world, both in number and strength of players.
The final statistics were overwhelming: Registrations: 2.921 players from 93 countries (1.627 playing at least one qualifier) including 74 GM, 5 WGM, 126 IM, 8 WIM, 82 FM y 1 WFM.
Twelve Swiss qualifiers were held, with around 350 players in each one. The best 32 best qualified to the KO finals, including 18 first order GM and 13 IM. Application of Clause V, section a), third paragraph of the Tournament rules has resulted in the disqualification of some players, including the initial winner and runner-up. The co-winners took 1.350 euros each.
Curiously the participant "Phileas" played none less than 87 rounds (each qualifier had 9 rounds, so he participated in 9,5 qualifiers!!, nearly all the week playing chess).

The event is in Cleveland OH. The Cleveland Public Library’s John G. White Chess and Checkers Collection is currently exhibiting an installation titled, Worlds of Chess Champions. This temporary exhibition is located in the third floor exhibition hall of the Main Building, 325 Superior Ave., N.E. The Library exhibition is free and open to the public. Paid parking is available on Rockwell, one block north of Superior Ave.
Worlds of Chess Champions puts chess into context through the lives of chess experts, authors, and champions. This exhibition sets the historical stage of chess champions from the 19th Century to the present. To illustrate the context of chess in the world, the earliest items displayed feature chess pieces from Egypt dating back to 1300 B.C. Other early items on display from the John G. White Chess and Checkers Collection include original manuscripts from the 16th, 17th, and 18th Centuries. Other rare and interesting items include a death mask photograph of an early 19th-century player, commemorative chess stamps, hand-written letters by and about world-famous chess champions, autographed material, and published books by chess champions.
Some of the materials in Worlds of Chess Champions have never before been exhibited. The John G. White Chess and Checkers Collection is the world’s largest and most comprehensive chess collection. The collection contains chess sets and pieces as well as material related to chess. Many stamps commemorating chess champions are in the exhibition. Newspaper and magazine clippings, chess championship programs, score sheets from games, and other rare items will be on display through June 12, 2004.
