1) Introduction

My thanks to Andy McFarland, Rod McShane, Arthur Brameld and Rafael Vasquez, John Donaldson, Fred Lucas, Uwe Fleischer, Yannick Pelletier, Miklos Orso, Laszlo Nagy, Sinisa Joksic, Alper Efe Ataman, Hassan Khaled, Dominque Primel, Antonio Rosino, Theodoros Tsorbatzoglou, Stewart Reuben, Harald Grafenhofer, Stephen Boyd, Gabor Pali, Ralph Frisch, Steve Laios and everyone else who helped with the issue.

The Association of Chess Professionals takes a major step with the start of elections to their board. I wish them all the luck, credible representation of the professional player has been needed for years not least to negotiate with FIDE and the European Chess Union. I'm unlikely to agree with everything they do but its time the players had a major voice at this time when making a living is so hard. They need to work hard at being united which is going to be difficult as players will have conflicting interests, I wish them luck.

FIDE have made decisions about their World Championships. Kramnik and Leko don't appear to be included (their match seems less and less likely to take place as we've been awaiting an immanent announcement for a long time). They have arrived at the strange situation where they have defaulted their champion, removed any future rights for a champion to be automatically in the final yet put Kasparov (world number one and perhaps most importantly the most likely to generate money for a match) straight through to a final where he will play the winner of a mini-cycle they have planned. I find it hard to get exercised about this as I might have in the past. Any solution where chess is actually played has at least got to have some merit.

Hope you enjoy this issue.

Mark

4) Association of Chess Professionals

The elections to the board of the Association of Chess Professionals have started. Voting takes place November 10th - December 15th 2003. Members can vote at the official website: http://www.chess-players.org where there are also full details. The board, which will consist of 9 representatives (7 men and 2 women) will commence its official duties on January 1st 2004. They have also announced they will be campaigning on a number of priority issues including hotels in official events, sponsorship in chess and decisions of both FIDE and the ECU.

5) FIDE announcement on the World Chess Championships

The FIDE Congress has decided that they will hold 2 KO qualifiers for a unified Men's World Championship, in April-May tentatively in Baku (Azerbaijan) and Tripoli (Lybia). The winners of the two sections will play and the winner of that will play Garry Kasparov for the unified title. It seems from my reading of the proposals they will ignore the claims of Vladimir Kramnik (who defeated Kasparov, yet Kasparov is in the unification process in spite of neither having nor claiming any world title) and Peter Leko (who is due to play him).

FIDE are back in financial problems and will move their headquarters to Greece.

FIDE announcement at: http://www.fide.com/news.asp?id=259 but we really need more details.

6) Tragedy for Egyptian Chess

Egypt's top player 38 year old Essam Ahmed Ali died on Monday 27th October and team boss Mohammed Labib, 60 the following day of cerebral malaria contracted at the African Games in Abuja, Nigeria. They were incorrectly diagnosed in Egypt after becoming ill.

Two of the delegation of the African games travelled on to the World Youth Championships (player Ahmed Adly and his coach Hassan Khaled) in Halkidiki, Greece where they were diagnosed and sent to Special Diseases Hospital in Thessaloniki. They recovered and went back to Egpyt.

Cerebral malaria is a disease of the brain that is accompanied by fever. The mortality ratio is between 25 and 50 percent, and if a sufferer is not treated, the disease is fatal in 24 to 72 hours.

Sources: News 24.com or The Age from Australia and later Al Ahram. (some of the info in these stories is incorrect). Also: http://www.sportmeeting.gr/WYCC2003/news.htm on the treatment in Greece.

Hassan Khaled sent a long E-Mail with better details as to what happened. I've slightly tidied up the language.

"We went to Abuja, Nigeria 2nd-19th October, our chess delegation was 6 players and 1 official and me as a coach. The African Team Active Chess tournament started on 5th October where Egypt made Medals for Team and individual Results.

The African Individuals with normal time controls started on 9th October 1st-5th qualifying for the World Championships.

On 16th-17th October 3 players from each country played in the African Individual Blitz with Medals for African Games. Egypt got 3 Gold, 3 Silver and 2 Bronze for the Blitz 1st place for Fouad El Taher (2505) and 2nd place for Ahmed Adly 2448.

African Individual 1st El Essam Gindy 2501 and GM norm and 2nd place for Ahmed Adly both qualified for the world Championships.

On 12th October I was in our accommodation drinking tea when I was bitten by a Scorpion on my left leg.

There was a fire of pains in my left leg where I was poisoned. Our Official Mohamed Labib, killed it and we went to the Nigerian Clinic and got 6 injections to recover at the end of the day.

On the 16th October I was very tired and felt cold and I needed a lot of covers then I became very hot and got a high temperature.

IM Imed Abdelnabbi and my student Ahmed Adly brought the Egyptian Doctor from our delegation and I told them about my case. They all said that I had Malaria. The Doctor came and gave to me only something to reduce my temperature!!

On the second day Ahmed Adly played his last games in the Blitz and Individual African with Malaria also, he took 2 jackets in order to be able to play last the last round.

The Egyptian Doctor at the end of the day him something for his stomach and to drop the temperature. The Doctor gave me the impression that Malaria is not that serious almost like the Flu!!!

We went to Greece on 22nd October, after the 1st round a Greek Doctor noticed Ahmed Adly and took him on 24th October to a good hospital in Thessaloniki. On 25th October he took me also, we were going to die.

On 27th October we learned about the death of Mohamed Labib, my room mate in Abuja and who saved me from the Scorpion and 38 year old IM Esam Aly Ahmed. He won the Arab Championships in 1996 and has 2 children, a boy 5 months old and a girl 2 years old.

We recovered and left Hospital on 31st October and returned to Egypt on the 3rd November, we now have only Anemia remaining, and for me I have stopped after 30 years of smoking.

After that they discovered another 24 cases in our African Games Delegation. We haven't had Malaria in Egypt for a long time so our Doctors didn't diagnose malaria correctly. There is now a great investigation to discover why only our delegation suffered from malaria of the 52 African countries in Abuja

The reason it first appeared in the chess players is that we are less fit than other sports. "

7) German Bundesliga

The first weekend of the German Bundesliga took place on 1st-2nd November 2003. Defending champions Luebeck withdrew from the event at the last minute leaving all their players unable to play for other teams. The reasons seem have been at least in part tax problems. SG Porz, SC Baden-Oos and SV Werder Bremen are all on 4/4.

12) Venetian Chess Autumn

Antonio Rosino reports: The 2003 edition of the Venetian Chess Autumn tournament was played 30th October - 2nd November 2003. The four tournaments were organized by the oldest of the Venetian Chess Clubs: "Esteban Canal" and "Carlo Salvioli". A total of 160 chessplayers participated. Forty players from seven different countries competed in the Master Tournament: 4 were GMs and 5 IMs. The winner with 5 from 6 was Hungarian GM Attila Groszpeter. The game Groszpeter - Jurkovic of the fifth round is not complete which is a pity as it was perhaps the decisive game of the tournament.

The event is in Cleveland OH. The Cleveland Public Library’s John G. White Chess and Checkers Collection is currently exhibiting an installation titled, Worlds of Chess Champions. This temporary exhibition is located in the third floor exhibition hall of the Main Building, 325 Superior Ave., N.E. The Library exhibition is free and open to the public. Worlds of Chess Champions puts chess into context through the lives of chess experts, authors, and champions. This exhibition sets the historical stage of chess champions from the 19th Century to the present.
