1) Introduction

My thanks to Julio Alberto González, Varlam Vepkhvishvili, Franz Jittenmeier, Frank Berry, Mehrdad Pahlevanzadeh, Vladimir Dvorkovich, Mihajlo Savic, Lanfranco Bombelli, AY Kumar, John Fernandez, George Mirijanian, Mikhail Golubev, Grantel Gibbs, George Mastrokoukos, Luis Scalise, Davide Cortese and everyone else who helped with the issue.

There are no SuperGM events this week but plenty of interesting chess at the end of the summer chess season. One story to look out for next week is whether Ruslan Ponomariov signs his contract to play Kasparov.

Hope you enjoy this issue.

Mark

2) Panamerican Continental Championships

The Panamerican Continental Championships take place in 16th-30th August 2003 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The 11 round Swiss has a $11,000 first prize. 7 qualify for the next FIDE Championships (Charbonneau, Gulko, Kaidanov and Shabalov are already qualified). Alexandre Lesiege, Maurice Ashley and Nick De Firmian were down to play but didn't arrive, possibily due to the chaos after the blackouts in the USA and Canada. After 6 rounds Alexander Goldin and Lenier Dominguez have 5.5/6.

7) FIDE Meeting in Nigeria

The FIDE Presidential Board held a meeting 17 August 2003 at the NICON Hilton Hotel in Abuja, Nigeria. Read FIDE's account http://www.fide.com/news.asp?id=131

A couple of points of interest. FIDE are negotiating with the Einstein Group to try and get the Kramnik-Leko match played. Secondly Ruslan Ponomariov hasn't yet signed his contract for his FIDE match against Kasparov. I understand there are a number of points that Ponomariov objects to in the contract but FIDE want the contract signed as presented. They also confirmed that the next FIDE Championship will start the last week of November and first three weeks of December 2004.
