1) Introduction

My thanks to Leon Gofshtein, Yin Hao, Stephen Boyd, Jan Mazuch, David Cohen, Bill O'Rourke, Hugh Brodie, Laszlo Nagy, Mehrdad Pahlevanzadeh, Roberto Alvarez, Antanas Zapolskis, Hans Groffen, Frank Quisinsky, Cristian Poposcu, Milan Ninchich, Jovan Petronic, Franz Jittenmeier, Rolf Behovits, NN Mohan, Andre Langlois, Richard James, Chris Bird, Rod McShane, Anuta Laurentiu, Argiris Kotsis and everyone else who helped with the issue.

Morozevich continues with a big performance with 5.5/7 but is still only half a point clear of Ilia Smirin. A bigger event Dortmund starts on Thursday with the results of Kramnik, Anand and Leko coming under particular scrutiny. Should be an interesting week.

Hope you enjoy this issue.

Mark

9) Zonal Tournament 3.3 China

Zonal Tournament 3.3 for men and women took place in Yongchuan, China, July 11th-23rd, 2003. Yin Hao sends the games and information about the event which took place in Yongchuan a very small town in the south-west of China about 70kms away from Chongqing.

There were two qualifiers from the men's event, the rising star 18 year old Bu Xiangzhi and FM Ni Hua (made a GM norm). There was also an 11-game IM norm for Zhou Weiqi by performance rating.

In the women's event the Chinese hope there will be four qualifiers but they're not quite clear its possible there may be places taken by the Asian Women's Championships. The top four were Xu Yuanyuan (the winner of the event, she should be made a WGM soon in retrospect due to her win in the 2000 World Girls Championship), Wang Yu (9 game WGM norm), Huang Qian (9 game WGM norm) and Zhao Xue (the World Girls Champion 2002) unrated Tan Zhongyi (made a 9 game WIM norm).

25) Australian Computer Championships

Milan Ninchich reports "The 2003 National Computer Chess Championship has been won by pre tournament favourite Warp, authored by Peter McKenzie. In what is becoming an all too familiar story, Peter hails from New Zealand, so yet another tropy makes its way across the Tasman. Warp score 4.5/5 to finish a half point ahead of KnightCap (Andrew Tridgell). There was a big tie for third between Tracex, Bodo, VChess and Small Potato. Full tournament details, standings, and game files can be found here http://www.syseng.anu.edu.au/~shaun/chess/NC3_Index_Page.html"

British Charity Simul Record attempt in Manchester

An attempt to break the British Record for simultaneous Chess will be made on Saturday August 9th 2003, in the Sugden Sports Centre in Manchester. The Scottish Grandmaster Jonathan Rowson will attempt to break the British record for the number of Chess games played simultaneously. You can be one of his opponents. TV, radio and newspaper coverage is expected at the attempt. The current record stands at 142 and was set in December 1956. All proceeds from this record attempt will support Kirsty's appeal to secure Francis House Children's Hospice in Didsbury. 150 chess players are needed to be part of this historic occasion and at the same time to help the Kirsty Appeal. Everyone who takes part will be encouraged to find sponsorship from friends and family to help the appeal. Little Kirsty Howard was born with her heart back to front. Kirsty is the face of the charity appeal formed in her name. She has become a major celebrity since she walked onto the pitch at Old Trafford hand in hand with her hero David Beckham and she stole the hearts of millions when, reunited with Beckham, she handed the final baton to Her Majesty the Queen at the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games. Kirsty was given six weeks to live three years ago. She continues to defy medical prognosis and is an inspiration to everyone she meets. Kirsty's target is to raise £5 million total for Francis House, of which £2,139,127 has been raised to date. This record-breaking attempt is being organized by the Mind Sports Olympiad. For information about the Mind Sports Olympiad visit http://www.msoworld.com.

This historic event starts at 10am on August 9th. The Sugden Sports Centre > is at 114 Grosvenor St, Manchester M1. Contact information: If you would like to play in the simultaneous chess record attempt: Telephone 01204 305563 or e-mail: simul@msoworld.com
