1) Introduction

My thanks to Andy McFarland, Zenón Franco Ocampos, Hassan Khaled, Edvard Glavas, Radu-Catalin Chirila, Laszlo Nagy and Gabor Pali, Rolf Sander, John Hilery, John Fernandez, Igor Glek and everyone else who helped with the issue.

The 16th Ciudad de Leon tournament returned back to a more conventional format this year. The last few years this has been an advanced chess event (players could consult computers) but this time the event was a rapid knockout. The winner was Ruslan Ponomariov with his first major win for some time. Always tough he won in game 3 of the final after his opponent Topalov rather surprisingly overstepped the time limit.

Elsewhere the European Championships are taking place in Istanbul, Turkey. 207 men and 116 women compete in the events. One of the competitors Igor Glek has been talking about playing conditions for professional players and raises the issue of a chess union or professional association. I've no idea how many of the the competitors in the event are full time professionals but you'd have to think at least 75% of the men are. Only a small number are going to make money a few will break even and the majority are going to lose. There are simply too many professionals chasing a smaller and smaller pool of money. Its not an equation that can easily be squared. In tennis its accepted that outside the top 100 you don't make any money playing tennis and that your career as a player (obviously there is coaching and teaching afterwards) is over by 34 or 35 at the very latest. Many chess players continue simply because they have no idea what else to do to make a living. Perhaps the first issue a chess union should address, how many professional players can the game support and what help in changing careers can be offered to those who can no longer make a living. Its a complex issue but one that may be sorted out by who is entitled to be in such a union. If its the top 100 players then they'll look out for themselves, top 200 likewise or higher. I do think its time that such a union or professional association was formed. In the case of women's tennis the current women's tour was formed after the disatisfaction of Billy Jean King and other leading players with the women's events of the time and that quickly went on to be a big success. If players outside the absolute elite want to improve their lot I think its safe to say they're going to have to do it for themselves.

Hope you enjoy this issue.

Mark

2) 16th "Ciudad de León" Tournament

The 16th "Ciudad de León" chess tournament took place June 5th-9th 2003 in León, Spain. This year was a quadrangular knockout rapid tournament. Ruslan Ponomariov beat Vesselin Topalov in the final 2.5-1.5. The key game was game three where Topalov missed several winning opportunities in a very complex game and eventually lost on time in spite of a 10 second increment per move being available.

In the semi-finals Topalov beat Sergey Karjakin who lost game 1 after a truly terrible blunder. Topalov went 2-0 up before Karjakin won game 3. Topalov drew a final mamouth game to win 2.5-1.5. Ponomariov vs Vallejo saw game one drawn before Ponomariov ran away with the semi 3.5-0.5.

2 semi-finals of 4 games - 20 minutes + 10 seconds per move. Schedule: Friday June 6th : First Semi final: Topalov - Karjakin Saturday June 7th Second Semi final : Ponomariov - Vallejo Sunday June 8th: Final. Play starts 4.30 pm.

5) 17th Open Pula

The 17th Open Pula 2003 took place 31st May - 7th June 2003. 183 players from 23 countries, 30 players over ELO 2400 competed.

Edvard Glavas reports: The Pula Open 2003 has finished. The last round was very dramatic: Murey lost on time in slightly better position, Rukavina allowed a draw by perpetual check in a clearly winning position, Sedlak made it to 2nd place when his opponent touched the wrong piece and had to give up instantly. The IMs made life very hard for the GMs. The organisers were slightly disappointed with the timing of the European Championships where most of the Croatian, Slovenian and some of the Hungarian GMs went at the last minute.

London Chess Set Exhibition

Sergei Karjakin, the youngest Grandmaster in chess history, will fly to London from the Ukraine to play an Exhibition Tournament with 12 year old David Howell from Eastbourne, on Saturday 28 June 2003 to celebrate the opening of The Art of Chess at the Gilbert Collection. This exhibition match, using giant chess pieces, will take place at 11am in the Edmond J Safra Courtyard of Somerset House, Strand, London WC2.

The Art of Chess will feature nineteen chess sets designed by artists in the last hundred years that demonstrate the interaction between chess and modern art. Each set illustrates a move in the apocryphal last game played by Napoleon with General Bertrand on St Helena in 1820. In the starting position is the world's only known set designed by Carl Fabergé, specially made circa 1905 for Tsar Nicolas II's Commander in Chief of the Russo-Japanese War, General Alexei Kouropatkin. Visitors can then follow the game through the porcelain designs of the Lomonosov State Porcelain Factory in Russia in the 1920s - the 'Propaganda' chess set with Capitalists versus Communists - to Marcel Duchamp's Buenos Aires chess set of 1919, and the geometric designs of the Bauhaus set by Josef Hartwig. There is also a set created by leading Fluxist artist Yoko Ono, as well as five especially commissioned new designs by Damien Hirst, Yayoi Kusama, Jake and Dinos Chapman, Paul McCarthy and Maurizio Cattelan, the latter being laid out as the final move - checkmate.
