1) Introduction

My thanks to Eugeny Atarov, Mikhail Golubev, Rod McShane, Mehrdad Pahlevanzadeh, Andy McFarland, Tryfon Gavriel, Zenon Franco, Maikel and Liuber Gongora, Laszlo Nagy, Ferenc Peredy and Andras Bacsi, Stephen Boyd, Hans Olav Lahlum, Eirik T. Gullaksen and Tarjei J. Svensen, Hassan Khaled, Greg Shahade, Ray Clark, George Mirijanian, Ivan Sokolov, Eduard Piacun, Thomas Henrich, Manmohan Das and everyone else who helped with the issue.

The Aeroflot Open is the main event of the week with a large and very strong field. Off the board there appears to have been an agreement between FIDE and Ruslan Ponomariov which will allow him to play Kasparov later in the year although the precise details are not available I understand Kirsan Ilyumzhinov may give a press conference tomorrow about it. Ivan Sokolov has forwarded a letter signed by many top players about the current World Championship situation. Finally the Linares tournament starts on Saturday 22nd February 2002. Kasparov starts as favourite as always, can Kramnik, Anand, Leko, Ponomariov, Radjabov and Vallejo do anything about it?

Hope you enjoy this issue.

Mark

5) FIDE Ponomariov Agreement

Mikhail Golubev reports that "Ruslan Ponomariov went to Moscow on February 12th 2003 where he met FIDE officials Emmanuel Omuku (FIDE Executive Director) and Berik Balgabaev (Assistant to the FIDE President), and two representatives of the Ukrainian Federation, including its President Petrov. Ruslan Ponomariov's personal respresentatives (including his lawyer) were excluded from the negotiations, that started at approx 18:00. Omuku has spoken a lot in English, but there were no interpreters. Ilyumzhinov emerged at the meeting at approx 22:00, and negotiations continued until approx 6:00, Feb 13th. In the end, when Ponomariov hardly could speak, he signed some paper. It seems, that in accordance with the signed declaration, Ponomariov withdrew his demands (draw odds, FIDE control) and in exchange was somehow ensured that Ponomariov-Kasparov and Kramnik-Leko matches will be organized by the same formula. The final decisions regarding Ponomariov-Kasparov match (official contract, etc) will be taken after the Linares tournament ends."

10) French Nationale I

Stephen Boyd sends the games from the first three rounds of the French National Team Championships which took place January 31st - February 2nd 2003 at various venues round France. The NAO Chess Club is the heavy favorite this year and they have already beaten the reigning champions Monaco. Vladimir Kramnik turned out for the NAO Club in the second round along with Michael Adams and Alexander Grischuk.

11) Key Bundesliga Weekend

The 10th and 11th rounds of the German Bundesliga took place over the weekend of February 8th-9th 2003. Round 10 saw the key clash between the joint leaders Koeln Porz and Luebecker SV. Champions for the last two years Luebeck won 5-3 and thus went a long way to retaining their title. 17) 4th Yateley Manor International

Ray Clark reports: The 4th Yateley Manor International (YMI) 2003 took place 24th-26th January and 1st-2nd February 2003. YMI claims to be unique in the UK as it is made up of 9 rounds over two week-ends - no need to take time of work / studies - and prizes include a paid place in the main event at the British Championships. This year YMI attracted players from England, Ireland, Jamacia, Mexico and Zimbabwe . In all there were 19 rated players with 7 rated over 2200 including 2 IMs and 4 FMs. Of the 34 who played 11 were juniors under 18 years and 5 were female. The event was won by John Cox FM (2289 BCF 205) improving on his 3rd place in 2002. Colin Crouch (last year's winner) although leading 5/5 at the end of the 1st week-end slipped to 2nd place after drawing to both Peter Sowray FM and Thomas Sharp and losing to 16 year old Thomas Rendle in round 7. However, Colin still increased his total YMI winnings to £740 having played each of the last 4 years. Meanwhile, both Craig Hanley FM and Robert Gwaze IM missed too many games to score highly. The organisers awarded a merit prize to14 year old Thomas Sharp (2079). In addition to his draw with Colin, Thomas won against Craig Hanley FM (2359). In fact Thomas only lost to John Cox - the eventual winner.

The prize winners at this year's events were : 1st John Cox 7.5 £250 + free place at British Champs 2003 2nd Colin Crouch 7.0 £120 3rd Andrew Greet 6.5 £50 4th Ben Savage 6.0 £30 Merit Thomas Sharp 5.5 £30 Both FIDE and BCF rating tables can be found at http://www.juniorchess.info

19) Open Letter

Statement from a group of players with regards to newly formed GM steering committee and possible changes in the WCh.

At the moment professional players (grandmasters) are facing challenging times with regards to the WCC and reunification of the chess World. From the reports in the press it could have been understood that GM Steering Commitee hads been established to cooperate with FIDE in order to ensure that the next WCC and the postunification period would be organized in the best interests of the professional players involved. Sadly, the GM Steering Commitee had not been elected using any form of general elections principles. It should be therefore understood that grandmasters currently "elected" in the Steering Commitee can not take decisions on behalf of the other players. GM Steering Commitee should be an important body representing the intrests of the players and elected by the players. Therefore top two hundred players (according to the last two FIDE Elo lists)should be given a chance to choose their representatives in the legal and fair elections. Needless to say grandmasters sitting on the Steering Commitee should not hold other functions within FIDE or expect to receive wild-cards for the various kinds of the FIDE events. Currently FIDE is planning drastic changes in the World Championship cycle possibly forfeiting democratic achievements of the past years and giving privilleged positions to the very few. Hopefully majority of the grandmasters would be consulted before such (unpopular) moves will be made.

Campomanes Sentenced to Jail

Former FIDE President Florencio Campomanes was sentenced to one year and 10 months imprisonment for "failure to render account on the disbursement" of the Philippine Sports Commission’s (PSC’s) funds for the June 6-25, 1992 World Chess Olympiad amounting to P12.8 million. It seems highly unlikely that Campomanes will be jailed. The case is another example of Campomanes cavalier attitude to money which saw him preside over FIDE to the point where it ran out of money. At the recent FIDE Congress he was angry to be questioned over his continued high expenses.

"Oskar-2002"

The chess community - journalists, publishers, organisers, arbiters and grandmasters who write on chess - have for over 30 years been determining the best chess-player and the Top Ten of the past year. The idea was first introduced and supported by spaniard Jorje Puch and International Association of Chess Press (AIPE). After a 7-years break the popular contest was revived by the Russian magazine "64" - Chess Review (published and edited by A.Roshal, the Chairman of FIDE CHIPS Commission).

64 invites that you offer your version of Top Ten for 2002. The one, whose prognosis turns out to be the most exact, will be honoured the title of "Prophet-2002". All the results will be published by "64" and will be available on the Internet. Websites: http://www.64.ru and http://www.chess-express.ru where you can read about the results-2002 of challengers and vote. Also you can vote by e-mail: chess@online.ru, info@joeblack.ru or by fax (095) 291 8717. Please help 64 to keep the tradition alive! Vote yourself, encourage your friends, publish the information on their web-site, in your magazine, etc. Also you can ask your reader’s opinion. Happy New Year!
