1) Introduction

My thanks to Stewart Reuben and Neville Twitchell, Paul Hodges and Nigel Freeman, Adolivio Capece, Zenon Franco, Antonio Bento, Laszlo Nagy, Ferenc Peredy and Andras Bacsi, Frank-Juergen Greger, Ching Kim Lye and Glen Read, Bobby Ang and everyone else who helped with the issue.

The final two games of the Kasparov vs. Deep Junior match again got big general publicity. The final game ended up on the US Sports cable channel ESPN2. I believe that the World Championships in the correct format can also command great publicity and this needs to happen very soon at the very latest by the end of the year. If there are problems with the Kasparov - Ponomariov match and it proves impossible to get a sponsor for Kramnik - Leko (not yet announced with only 3 or 4 months to go) then the Prague agreement will need to be revisited.

I think a four player all-play-all of several cycles (6 for 18 games) is the ideal solution. I hear the objection is that players would throw games. This kind of "match fixing" is not permitted in other sports and a contractual obligation backed up with real sanctions would I think work. Personally I don't see too much evidence that players in the elite would throw games (and if there is such a problem then its time it was stamped out) but the regulations would be there to stop it and address the more paranoid's worries.

The merits of a final with four players are many. Its a quick, clean and attractive solution. Unlike matches tournaments have to go the full duration and there are usually issues to be decided right to the end so sponsors get full value for their money and finally elite tournaments are incredibly popular with chess fans and would be very easy for the more general press to report.

A match tournament every two years for the World Championships would be my long term solution also. Qualifiers would be one big Swiss (anyone in the top 100 plus leading players from unrepresented continents would be entitled to play) a Candidates tournament of 10 players 18 rounds producing 3 finalists joining the World Champion in the final (one could also put the Champion in the Candidates and directly have 4 qualifiers). In my view this would be relatively easy to finance, consume far less time in a crowded chess calendar than alternative solutions, fair in chess terms and popular.

Hope you enjoy this issue.

Mark

2) Kasparov vs. Junior Match

The Kasparov vs. Deep Junior takes place January 26th-February 7th 2003. The event was called the "The FIDE Man Vs Machine World Chess Championship" and was sponsored by FIDE and presented by X3D Technologies Corporation which covered the recent Kasparov - Karpov match. The time control is 40 moves in 2 hours followed by 20 moves in one hour then 30 minutes for the rest of the game. The Prize Fund was $1m with Garry Kasparov taking $750,000 and the DEEP JUNIOR team $250,000.

The last two games were drawn and so was the match. Game 5 saw the computer play a Greek Gift against Kasparov which looked unsound but proved very hard to refute, the game was drawn by repetition a few moves later. The final game which was live on ESPN2 was drawn in 28 moves.

12) Auckland International Open Correction

The Howick & Pakuranga Times Auckland International Open took place January 26 - 31 2003. Peter Froehlich won the event with 7.5/9 half a point clear of Drazen Sermek. My thanks to Michael Freeman for the news. Note that I corrected the name Mc Laren, Leonard in the PGN and results section a couple of days after TWIC came out last week and I stupidly got the country wrong so I've represented the games this week. My thanks to Ching Kim Lye and Glen Read.

Campomanes Sentenced to Jail

Former FIDE President Florencio Campomanes was sentenced to one year and 10 months imprisonment for "failure to render account on the disbursement" of the Philippine Sports Commission’s (PSC’s) funds for the June 6-25, 1992 World Chess Olympiad amounting to P12.8 million. It seems highly unlikely that Campomanes will be jailed. The case is another example of Campomanes cavalier attitude to money which saw him preside over FIDE to the point where it ran out of money. At the recent FIDE Congress he was angry to be questioned over his continued high expenses.
