1) Introduction

My thanks to Jovan Petronic, Leonid Gofshtein, John Henderson, Mikhail Golubev, Christopher Morgan, Sergey Bystrov, Laszlo Nagy, Jan Sikora, Steve Laios, Mirjana Medic, John Saunders, Johan Hut, Adolivio Capece, Michael Freeman, Paco F. Albalate, Antonio Bento, Ülar Lauk and everyone else who helped with the issue.

The Corus Wijk aan Zee tournament and the Linares tournament that follows a month later are hugely important in establishing the status of players. Under especial pressure to deliver are Vladimir Kramnik in his first tournaments since July 2001, Ruslan Ponomariov who is in dispute with FIDE over the match conditions for his match against Garry Kasparov, whose results will be under scrutiny in Linares. Whatever the rights and wrongs of the dispute between FIDE and Ponomariov (and in general I'm not in favour of a return to draw odds for the champion although there is at least a case for it in this reunification process) I think FIDE need to be careful. Kasparov's long term mistrust of FIDE started with perceived injustices in the period 1983-5 (being defaulted in the Candidates against Korchnoi and the events at the end of the unfinished match against Karpov in 1984-5). Ponomariov could well be undisputed World Number 1 in the next decade then FIDE might find it payback time and that won't be good for anyone. Also Anand could write a whole book about having his tournaments being ruined by the politicians turning up. FIDE officials should not be issuing deadlines and turning up to events such as Wijk aan Zee and disturbing Ponomariov when the result of this event is so hugely important.

Hope you enjoy this issue.

Mark

5) Ponomariov about to be defaulted?

According to reports from a Ukrainian Chess Website FIDE set a final deadline of 10th January 2003 for Ruslan Ponomariov to sign a contract to play Garry Kasparov as part of the reunification process agreed in Prague. On January 7th FIDE set an absolute deadline of January 10th otherwise Ponomariov would be replaced by Vassily Ivanchuk. Ponomariov absolutely refuses to sign the document citing many problems with it. His key demands are a time control of 90 minutes + 30 seconds per move the same time rate under which he won the title and draw odds as Kramnik as champion receives in his match with Leko. The Ukrainian Chess Federation backs Ponomariov saying " The Ukraine Chess Federation considers the urgent signing of contract on 10th January unacceptable. It is necessary to conduct normal negotiations between all sides in order to accept the compromise and, most importantly, objective solution." They add that in their view decisions made in Bled about the negotiations have been broken . [Story In Russian http://www.chesspage.kiev.ua/?z=interview.35]

The Corus Website makes this comment: "Asked for his first impression of the Corus Chess Tournament, Ponomariov commented as follows: "Yesterday I was tired, because FIDE is constantly pressing me [FIDE representatives Azmaiparashvili and Makropoulos are present in Wijk aan Zee]."

"Later Ponomariov issued a statement in which he declared that, although he supports the agreement of Prague, he still has nothing on paper from FIDE about his rights and obligations concerning the upcoming world championship. Ponomariov insists that he needs such a document because verbal agreements with FIDE have not proven too valuable in the past. Ponomariov thinks it is a disgrace that FIDE is pressing him to sign a contract for the cycle by means of an ultimatum that ends during the Corus Chess Tournament, since that distracts him from his games."

He has released an open letter (in Russian only at: http://chess-sector.odessa.ua/letter.htm) written in Wijk aan Zee and addressed to the FIDE President.
