My thanks to Gérard Demuydt, Laszlo Nagy, Dagobert Kohlmeyer, Andras Bacsi, Radu Chirila, Leonid Gofshtein, Emmanuel Variniac, Thomas Leckner, Arthur Brameld, Davor Golek and everyone else who helped with the issue.
Much better news this week as the Olympiad is well underway and the games are coming through. Russia with its heavyweight team of Kasparov, Khalifman, Grischuk, Svidler, Morozevich and Rublevsky looks certain to take the Gold and number 2 seeds Hungary are living up to their seeding so far (in fact as I write they have just beaten Russia 2.5-1.5 in round 9, it still doesn't alter my view as to where the gold is going). Alongside the Olympiad will is the FIDE Congress. Kirsan Ilyumzhinov is unopposed as President but there will be a number of elections for other posts. The drug testing issue is set to come to a head when testing starts this week although I believe FIDE have said there will be no sanctions for positive tests. It will be interesting to see how that pans out.
Hope you enjoy this issue.

The 35th Chess Olympiad Bled takes place 25th October - 11th November 2002 and the 73rd FIDE Congress, 1st-11th November 2002. There was a huge improvement in the coverage of the Olympiad from Bled from the 3rd round onwards with the games coming through mostly without problems. It does seem to me however that the next Olympiad should make provision for people to type the games in from the first round in the case of problems next time and that there should be extra staff throughout the Olympiad who can check the games for errors introduced by electronic boards. Russia led by Garry Kasparov (4.5/5 and a huge 3000+ ELO rated performance) look almost certain to retain their title. After 8 rounds they are a point and a half clear of Hungary and look to have few weak points in their team. Nomatter what the result of the Russia - Hungary clash the Hungarian team looks balanced enough to be favourites for the silver medal having very much lived up to their number 2 seeding. Things haven't been so smooth for the Ukraine (number 3 seeds), Israel (4), Netherlands (5) and England (6). In clear 3rd place is China (7th seeds) who are starting to live up to the investment in time and energy that has taken place in recent years to the development of their players.
