1) Introduction

My thanks to Ingvar Johannesson, Marius and Herman Claudius van Riemsdijk, Eduard Piacun, Gagik Khanamiryan, John Saunders, James Alvis, Radu Chirila, Manuel Glave Testino, Jovan Petronic, Mig Greengard and everyone else who helped with the issue.

The top event is the Brains in Bahrain Match. Kramnik's win in game two showed how he can expect to win the games from practically symmetrical positions using his fantastic technique. The match reminds me very much of the 1996 match between Kasparov and Deep Blue in Philadelphia rather than the acrimonious match the following year which Kasparov lost. For one thing there seems to be friendly relations between the programmers and the player. Interestingly Feng-hsiung Hsu has just published a book on Deep Blue called "Behind Deep Blue : Building the Computer That Defeated the World Chess Champion" which may reopen the controversy about that match. To me the most controversial thing was the fairly obvious way they tried to upset Kasparov away from the board in 1997 rather than Kasparov's claims of human influence on the moves.

Its been a busy week for me and some smaller news stories have had to be held over until next week.

Hope you enjoy this issue.

Mark
