The agreement reached in Prague for a unified World Championships was essential for the future health of chess. Tough negotiation meant that a deal looked in doubt until mid-afternoon on Monday 6th. As the plan states "In the given circumstances and in the interest of the future of chess we will have to accept that the unity plan is far from perfect." most obviously in the apparent non-participation of Anand and Ivanchuk. It will be interesting to see the reaction of players who didn't sign the agreement. Nevertheless the world championships couldn't carry on as it was as the cycles were clearly not economic. Now its possible to see much better coverage for chess in the media and the possibility of building on this event to produce other tournaments as well. Some time in the next 90 days detailed proposals will be made and we will be able to see more clearly what will happen next. For the chess fan its the most exciting development in chess for many years. For a start it sets up the fascinating match Garry Kasparov vs. Ruslan Ponomariov. Finally you've got to hand it to Yasser Seirawan, without his vision and drive this wouldn't have happened. Personally I found the possiblity of reunification of titles inconceivable a few months ago when he produced his proposals.
Hope you enjoy this issue.

Plans for a unified Classical Chess Championships under the auspices of FIDE have been agreed in Prague today on May 6th. They will result in a single undisputed champion after a World title match in October - November 2003.
Prague Unity Plan - Annex A
This Annex A document explains the plan to unify the chess world.
Before discussing the unity plan, we must all realize that the current situation in the chess world makes it virtually impossible to offer a plan that will fully satisfy all interested parties, from FIDE, Vladimir Kramnik and Einstein TV (ETV), Garry Kasparov, the rank and file World's grandmasters and the Chess Commissioners Office for the First Cycle. Contracts have been signed, sponsors have made their commitments and the calendar of chess events does not encourage the staging of many and varied classical chess events to create a FIDE Classical Chess Champion. The plan for the First Cycle should be economical, efficient, marketable and reasonably acceptable to the world's chess players and fans. While the First Cycle is being staged, a firm agreement for the Second Cycle is agreed and its implementation and funding must begin as soon as possible.
Currently, Vladimir Kramnik and ETV have embarked on a cycle that will stage a tournament in Dortmund with seven top grandmasters and the German Champion GM Christopher Lutz. The Dortmund winner is to play Vladimir Kramnik in a match for the Classical Chess World Championship.
We all realize that four top ten players are missing from the ETV cycle: Garry Kasparov, Viswanathan Anand, Ruslan Ponomariov and Vassily Ivanchuk.
UNITY PLAN
Although to would certainly be preferable to include all top 10 players in the First Cycle, timing and existing commitments and contracts appear to make that impossible. In the given circumstances and in the interest of the future of chess we will have to accept that the unity plan is far from perfect.
The Dortmund winner will play the Classical World Chess Champion Vladimir Kramnik and the present FIDE World Champion Ruslan Ponomariov will play Garry Kasparov, the current World's number one rated player.
The two match winners will play a reunification Classical Chess World Championship match in October/November 2003.
The unity plan brings about a single unified Classical World Chess Champion within a one and a half year period. That opens the doors to a new World Chess Championship cycle inclusive of all the top chess players in the world. We realize that cooperation and support of all parties is necessary and that by setting aside personal interests we can achieve this goal.
Resolution of May 6, 2002 on the Unification of the Chess World
- All parties and persons present at the meeting of May 6, 2002 in Prague have expressed their willingness to support the process of unification of the Chess World.

- The professional chess world requires a professional management body to be constituted on the basis of a business plan, which will be submitted by Bessel Kok and to be discussed and agreed with the World Chess Foundation and the FIDE Presidential Board within 90 business days after May 6, 2002. on approval of the business plan, FIDE shall issue a license (excluding Einstein Group pre-unification events) to this body to manage professional chess as a profitable business.
- FIDE supports the principles of unity plan (Annex A) presented by Bessel Kok and will cooperate to help with the acceptance of the principles on which the unity plan is based and the implementation thereof, by all players concerned including the FIDE World Champion, and all organizers involved.
- All parties and persons present agree to the principles put forward during the meeting with respect to the post-unification World Championships system.

The Eurotel knockout took place in Prague April 27th - May 5th 2002. 32 of the best players in the World competed for a prizefund of 500,000 Euros and the Eurotel Trophy. Presented under the auspices of Online World Chess B.V. (Bessel Kok, and Serge Grimaux), it was the highest-level chess event ever to be held in the Czech Republic.
Time rate 25 minutes + 5 seconds per move. Two blitz games and if necessary a final game were used in case of a tie. The events final had two games played at 40 moves in 2 hours; 20 moves in 1 hour; rest of the game in 30 minutes.
The event was won by Viswanathan Anand who beat surprise finalist Anatoly Karpov. Karpov's impressive run was wins against Short, Vladimir Kramnik, Alexander Morozevich and Alexei Shirov. In the other half of the draw Vassily Ivanchuk accounted for Garry Kasparov but was eliminated in the semi-finals by Anand. This result brings to an end a bad run of results for Anand.

The final round of the Bundesliga took place over the weekend of 27th-28th April 2002. Luebeck retained the title they won last year ahead of Köln Porz in second and Solinger SG in third. With one team short (Magdeburg withdrew at the start of the season) and another Castrop withdrawing next year it seems likely only two teams will be relegated instead of four. Games from half the matches are available.

Steve Brandwein and Alex Yermolinsky report: Cyrus Lakdawala and Vladimir Mezentsev tied for first in the 6th Charles Linklater Memorial held April 4-21. The two winners, who each scored 7-3 in the Category 4 (2337 FIDE average) round robin, also made IM norms. For the San Diego based Lakdawala it was his third and final norm and he will receive his long overdue title at the FIDE Congress in Slovenia later this year. This was the second norm for Mezentsev who needs one more result for the title. This was the 8th IM or GM norm event held at the club since the end of 1998. A total of 17 IM norms and 1 GM norm have been earned in MI events during this time. One might get the impression that the MI is a title mill, but the reality is quite different. Lakdawala and Mezentsev have both been rated over 2500 USCF and 2400 FIDE for many years. If they lived in Europe they would have been IMs a long time ago, but lacked the opportunities. The list of players who have made norms in MI events reads like a list of some of the best young talent in North America (G. Shahade, Bhat, Krush, Mulyar, Zugic, Kraai and so on).
The only player rated below 2450 USCF to make a norm at the MI is Richard Lobo (usually around 2360) who achieved it the hard way in one event. He lost his first three and then scored 5 1/2 from 6! The point is that the MI is just about the only place in the US to try for roundrobin norms.
The credit for this event goes to Anthony Corrales. He not only organized and directed, but also found the sponsorship. Other scores: 3. De Guzman 6; 4-5. Lobo and Nambiar 5.5; 6. Rey 5; 7-8. Donaldson and Shivaji 4.5; 9-10. Narayan and Keatinge-Clay 4; 11. Thornally 2 Special mention should be made of FM Frank Thornally. Playing in his first serious tournament in several decades, Thornally lost his first seven games, but then showed great strength of character to rebound with two wins at the end of the event.

Richard Palliser reports: The 2nd Oxford University Congress took place last weekend at Lincoln College and proved to be a great success. The superb venue was fully packed with just over 100 entries, whilst the Open's status as a Terence Chapman Grand Prix Elite Event was sufficient to attract GMs Peter Wells and Aaron Summerscale and, in total, nine players graded over 200. Sadly Wells had to withdraw after round one due to illness, whilst Summerscale later also withdrew after a fourth round defeat.
