My thanks to Zenon Franco, Ian Rogers, Dragan Zivic, Jovan Dragic, Jovan Petronic, Steve Laios, Jan Vavrak, Mihajlo Savic, Carsten Hensel, Dmitry Tyomkin, Mehrdad Pahlevanzadeh, Michael Atkins, Stephen Wright, Aard Daanen, Eirik Gullaksen, John Saunders, Eugeny Ararov, Alan Parsons, Luis Manuel Pérez Rodríguez and Luis Lamarche Rodriguez, Gabriela Koskoska, Laszlo Nagy, Vlad Barsi and Istvan Magyar, Istvan Brindza, Sinisa Drazic and all those who helped with this issue.
The main event was the 1st FIDE World Cup event which took place in Dubai. Peter Leko's win was probably a bit of a surprise as he doesn't have a great reputation as a rapid player. He beat Alexander Grischuk who has been in good form recently and might be on the verge of becoming a fixture at the very top of the game. The biggest shock was the elimination of Ruslan Ponomariov in the first round. This result follows hard on the heals of Kramnik's dismal results at the Amber tournament. Kasparov, the world number one, doesn't permit himself such bad results, ever, yet the World Champions apparently do. I find it very disappointing and unprofessional of them.
Hope you enjoy this issue.

The First FIDE World Cup event took place in Dubai, UAE April 3rd-8th 2002. The event was a modified knockout. 32 players started the event and this field was reduced to 16 players after the first round of knockout matches. After that the event continued as a knockout as far as the first prize was concerned but losers continued to play on to determine their exact finishing spot (for instance round 2 losers played for positions 9-16). The final took place on Monday 8th April between Peter Leko and Alexander Grischuk saw two draws in the 25 minute games, two draws in the blitz games and was only settled in a time scramble in the sudden death game with Leko winning on time, he had two seconds left when Grischuk ran out of time. Final Standings: 1. Peter Leko 2. Alexander Grischuk 3. Alexei Shirov 4. Kiril Georgiev 5. Anatoly Karpov 6. Zurab Azmaiparashvili 7. Veselin Topalov 8. Etienne Bacrot 9. Viswanathan Anand 10. Alexander Khalifman 11. Alexey Dreev 12. Teimour Radjabov 13. Joel Lautier 14. Vassily Ivanchuk 15. Nigel Short 16. Zhu Chen.
The biggest shocks of the event were the round one victory of Zhu Chen over Ruslan Ponomariov (after this great result Zhu Chen didn't win another match and only scored one win and one draw in the rest of the event). Zhu Chen should have won the first game of the match and did win the second to beat the FIDE World Champion. The second shock was Zurab Azmaiparashvili's win against Viswanathan Anand in the second round eliminating one of the favourites to win the whole event.
Peter Leko the winner took US $43,200 with Alexander Grischuk winning US $22,800.
After sitting through more bad FIDE coverage than I care to even think about I should probably add a couple of words of praise for the official coverage of this Grand Prix which was excellent, timely and free of errors.
Time limits: first two games 25 minutes + 10 seconds a move. Next two playoff games 5 minutes + 10 seconds per move. Final sudden death game black gets draw odds and 4 minutes, white gets five minutes.

Michael Atkins reports on the Foxwoods Open took place March 28th-31st 2002.
Foxwoods Open, Version 2002, was another unqualified success over the Easter weekend at the world's largest casino at Foxwoods Resort and Casino. Set on the gorgeous grounds of the Mashantucket Pequot nation in Connecticut, over 550 players came to compete in one of the finest playing areas in the US. Bill and Brenda Goichberg organized for the Continental Chess Association. Wonders never cease at the Foxwoods Resort, it is simply an amazing place!
The Open section finished in a six-way tie for first at 5.5/6 among Grandmasters, in order of tiebreaks, Ildar Ibragimov, Ilya Smirin, Joel Benjamin, Alexander Goldin, Gregory Kaidanov and Giorgi Kacheishvili. This year's tournament was also a Qualifying event for the 2003 U.S. Championships with 6 spots up for grabs among U.S. residents who payed an additional qualifying fee prior to the start of the event. The six qualifiers, in order of tiebreaks, were Maurice Ashley, Michael Mulyar, Alex Stripunsky, Igor Foygel, Larry Kaufman and Alan Bennett with Marc Esserman the first reserve.
The big upset in Round 1 was current U.S. Champion Larry Christiansen losing to FM Allan Bennett. Bennett eventually qualified for the US Championships next year, where Larry might get a chance at some cold Klingon revenge.
Round 6 produced an interesting game between Mongolian FM Enkhbat Tegshsuren and GM Yuri Shulman, in which ET caught Shulman in an attack which drove the Black King all the way to the G1 square.

Steve Laios writes: The Belgians interteams held a play-off match for the 10th place on 24th March 2002 in the city Mechelen between KAOSK (Antwerp) and KGSRL2 (Gent) Result : 3.5-4.5. This means KGSRL2 stay in Division 1. Steve Laios also includes games from division 2 (with one "certain Anatoly Karpov" this is not a joke). Karpov was in Brussels for the last round (10th march 2002 playing for Chess Club Anderlecht).
In addition please note that when I compiled TWIC I made a number of errors in the dates for the rounds for the Belgian Teams. Round 7 was on 20th Jan, Round 8 3rd February, 9 17th February, 10, 3rd March and 11 10th March 2002. Thanks to Steven Laios for pointing that out too.
David Smerdon of Queensland won the 40th Edition of the Doeberl Cup which took place in Canberra, March 29th - April 1st 2002. Smerdon won with a score of 6.5/7 a point clear of Ian Rogers.
Smerdon slightly road his luck winning against Gary Lane from a lost position in a time scramble in round 4. In round 5 there was an exciting game between Rogers and Smerdon in which Rogers sacrificed a whole rook for an attack. This was beaten off by Smerdon who eventually went on to win the game and take sole lead. He topped this performance off by beating Darryl Johansen with black on the same day and more or less guaranteeing first. This win double against Australia's two GMs was some achievement.
Information Ian Rogers and Charles Zworestine. A few games are currently available, many more will be available later.
