There is a lot to look forward to this week with the Corus tournament in Wijk aan Zee already underway and the FIDE Championships final between Ivanchuk and Ponomariov starting on Wednesday. We can't complain.

Hope you enjoy this issue.

2) Corus, Wijk aan Zee

The Corus tournament in Wijk aan Zee takes place Jan 11th-27th 2002. There will be photo reports by John Henderson from the start of round three.

The Corus tournament in Wijk aan Zee started on January 12th 2002. After all the problems the event still ended up with half of the top 20 players in the World. The problems surrounded having to replace a number of players at the last moment. The final of the FIDE Championships take place January 16th-26th 2002 and with almost the entire field competing Wijk aan Zee were always likely to have to find two new players. The finalists turned out to be Ivanchuk and Ponomariov both Corus invitees and they were quickly replaced with Khalifman and Dreev. Kramnik withdrew because of his (now postponed) BGN computer match and he was replaced by by Evgeny Bareev. Lastly an event a week before the start which was impossible to forsee, Kasparov, the winner of the event for the last three editions withdrew after a nasty virus meant that doctors advised against air travel for 7-10 days (not to mention the fact that if Kasparov is not well enough to travel he probably isn't well enough to play). Kasparov was replaced by Alexander Morozevich.

There was great news at the opening ceremony where to quote the official website "Rauke Henstra of Corus gladly announced the news all chess fans want to hear: in 2003 there will be a 65th Corus Chess Tournament! Further more, the business units Corus Packing Plus, Corus Strip Products IJmuiden and the external sponsor Delta Onroerend Goed BV decided to garantuee the Corus Chess Tournament for the next 3 years. "

The first two rounds have already produced interesting games. It should be an open and exciting event.
