Chess Tiger 14.0

Christoph Théron's ChessTigerhas gained enormously in strength over the past few years as its impressive victories in several international tournaments have demonstrated. In autumn of 1999, ChessTiger entered the ranking list of chess programs (SSDF) and immediately topped the list. Apart from ChessTiger 14.0, the CD also contains GambitTiger 2.0. GambitTiger is a particularly aggressive version of ChessTiger which mercilessly attacks the king. Thats why GambitTiger often chooses moves other programs would never play. Recently GambitTiger showed its claws in the Linares of chess programs" and came second behind DeepFritz. In contrast to their direct predecessors, ChessTiger 14.0 and GambitTiger also take advantage of the endgame databases (tablebases) and support multi-variation mode.

The Chigorin Defence by Martin Breutigam At master level, the Chigorin Defence has seldom been played and probably thats why it has been less analysed than other openings - good prerequisites for freethinkers and adventurers on the chess board!“ (Breutigam) The Chigorin Defence resulting after 1.d4 d5 2.c4 Nc6 has become popular again thanks to Alexander Morozevich who with has been holding his own even against the best. FIDE master Martin Breutigam includes a small but swell database with 100 entries - 7 texts and 93 sample Another database includes 54 training questions enabling the user to test his freshly acquired knowledge. Furthermore, the CD features a big database of more than 4.000 games as a reference database plus a big tree of all games. System requirements: Pentium, Windows 95,98,2000,Me RRP: £17.95 / $27

Main Line Caro-Kann Neil McDonald Everyman $21.95/£14.99 The Caro Kann has always been one of the most widely played openings among club and tournament players. This handy battle manual deal with the critical main line positions after 1 e4 c6 2 d4 d5 3 Nc3 dxe4 4 Nxe4. Highly-regarded author Grandmaster Neil McDonald offers a comprehensive survey of the state of opening theory for both White and Black players, explaining the basic elements, strategies and tactics for both sides

New In Chess Yearbook 58 New In Chess $22.50/£15 Opening preparation is not the first thing that comes to mind when the name of Brain Game World Champion Vladimir Kramnik is brought up. However, with the right ingredients in hand he is more than capable of producing some spicy opening dishes. Have a taste from Kramnik's Kitchen. CHEF DE CUISINE Thanks to Vladimir Kramnik an old line against the Gruenfeld Indian has come back into fashion.

Offbeat Spanish Glenn Flear Everyman $21.95/£14.99 Deciding what to do against the Spanish (Ruy Lopez) is a perennial problem for those who play too passively and end up having to face what is known as the 'Spanish Torture'. In this book Grandmaster Glenn Flear studies a wide variety of ambitious and offbeat answers catering for many different playing styles. From the super-solid Berlin (as used so successfully by Vladimir Kramnik in his Brain Games World Championship victory against Garry Kasparov) to the uncompromising Schliemann, there is enough choice here for any prospective black player facing the Spanish

1) Introduction

My thanks to Jovan Petronic, Laszlo Nagy, Eirik Gullaksen, Yin Hao, Alexis Murillo, Rodolfo Arias, Wybe Koopmans and Robert Klomp, Pablo Sierra, Johan Zwanepol and all those who helped with this issue.

Kazakhstan was the top event this week with as predicted Kasparov and Kramnik battling it out for first place. It came down to their final round meeting, Kasparov had white and Kramnik had an extra half point. Again the Berlin Defence to the Ruy Lopez but this time Kasparov did manage to break through after a very difficult struggle that saw both players using a lot of time and Kasparov emerge victorious. This was an important victory for Kasparov, the first at normal time-rates against Kramnik since Linares 1997 and one that keeps his long win of tournament victories going. It also keeps the question of who is the stronger player at the moment very much open. This week sees the European Chess Championships in Ohrid with a huge and strong field, its anyone's guess who will win that.

Hope you enjoy this issue

Mark

2) Kazakhstan

The SuperGM tournament in capital of Kazakhstan, Astana took place in May 19th (Round 1 20th) – June 1st 2001. The event celebrated the tenth anniversary of the independence of Kazakhstan in Astana. The event saw Kasparov take first place after defeating and overtaking Kramnik in the final round by finally breaking down Kramnik's Ruy Lopez Berlin Defence. This continues a remarkable run of tournament successes for Kasparov who nevertheless was defeated by Kramnik in their BGN match last year. In third place was Boris Gelfand who for some strange reason hardly gets any invitations to this kind of event even though he almost always performs well. Shirov and Morozevich tied in fourth place and local player Darmen Sadvakasov had only his two draws against Kasparov to really celebrate.

4) Yugoslav Team Championship Playoffs

IM Jovan Petronic reports: Herceg Novi (Yugoslavia) was the venue of the Yugoslav 1st league team championship playoffs which took place May 25th-28th 2001. The event was a knockout with four teams in the semi-finals (over two days) and then a final and a 3rd-4th playoff (again over two days).

The finals were very close. The game that decided the championships was the last one to finish. Ftacnik (BEKO) missed a needed draw to get his team 1st place late in the game against Aleksandrov. Aleksandrov needed a win, Ftacnik a draw and after the first time control this was the only game still in progress. A draw would have meant the overall result would have been 6-6 and the tie-break which would have favoured last year's champion BEKO. After the game Russian grandmaster Vadim Zviangintsev pointed out a draw (around move 57) by keeping the black rook on the first and second ranks, stopping white from promoting the Queen. Ftacnik did not notice this, and the drama continued, he had to resign on move 73 when JUGOBANKA STOCAR BANKA became the new Yugoslav team champions for the first time in their history.

Final Standings:

1st Jugobanka Stocar banka (Cacak) Champions 2001
2nd BEKO (Belgrade) (they were the defending champions)

13) Dutch Team Playoffs Hans Ree's Win

The Dutch Team Championship playoffs took place in Breda May 24th-25th 2001. The team of Ordina (Van Wely, Timman, Sokolov, Lautier etc. ) won the event by beating Magnus/BSG (Glek, Bosch, Barsov, Ree) 6-4 in the final. Magnus pulled a huge surprise in the semi-finals by beating HSG (Piket, Seirawan, Ljubojevic, Sadler, Rogers etc) by drawing 5-5 and then beating them in a rapid playoff. The most important match up here was Piket - Ree. First a good draw for Ree in the normal time rate game and then a win in the rapid game. Ordina thumped ING/ESGOO in the semis 10-0.

Ree's win against Piket in the rapid playoff in round 1 was drastic. He followed an old game he played against Walter Browne in 1981.

Impressions of the 2nd European Women’s Chess Championship, held in Warsaw Poland, April 21st to May 4th, 2001

During my stay in Warsaw as member of the Commission of Appeal I noticed the following participants impressions of the Championship. To begin on a positive note the players expressed their satisfaction with the high level of the accommodations (hotel and tournamenthall), the quality of the arbiters, the daily bulletin and the outstanding general organization.

On the other hand there were raised many objections to the very drastic reduction in the time limit, increasing the rate of play by around 30%. "We believe that several of the fears expressed by those opposed to these changes have been confirmed in practice during this tournament. In particular, the presence of a permanent anxiety over time has led to a strong tendency towards automatic, superficial moves, seriously damaging the creative element of the games, and reducing to a minimum the number which were of a really high level. This, as well as an increase in the frequency of serious mistakes and winning positions thrown away in time trouble, is counterproductive if the primary aim of the changes is, as stated, to make the game more attractive and 'spectator friendly' ".

Not only is the overall time too short, but the distribution of it makes little sense. Between move 40 and 60 the increase in playing speed was even more then 50% (15 minutes + 30 seconds per move). However there have been a number of long and simplified endgames in which time has cumulatively built up on the clocks. Time which would have been very valuable at an earlier stage is sometimes at the end quite redundant. A possible improvement could be the use of the Bronstein method for time increment, which was used in the last K vs. K" match.

The tiebreak on the last day was a catestrophe. The regulations concerning the pairings could be explained in several ways. The practical implementation was almost impossible. There were 24 candidates for the last 18 qualification places. Therefore there were needed 5 knock-out rounds to determine which players would qualify for the world chess championship. With an average of 40 moves per game this would mean a playing time of 107 minutes per round (2 games + sudden death). This adds up to 8¾ hours of pure playing time. We started at 11 a.m.. At 7 in the evening two rounds still had to be played.

Because the prizegiving and the closing ceremony were planned at 7 and the medallists and the all the qualifiers had been determined the rest of the tiebreak was aborted. Another problem was the big number of required arbiters. In this case up to 18 arbiters were needed, which was impossible to determine up front.

Finally we suggest to cancel the following passage in the regulations "if is is possible players from the same federation are not paired against each other in the latter half of the competion (from 8th round onwards) if they are in a score group of 50 percent or higher" This could favour players from stronger federations. Also we recommend to explain in the regulations how the drawing of lots for the sudden death should be done.

In short, while many of the players here would have been ready to agree with some increase in the speed of the play, the manner in which this has been done was too extreme. There have been no positive or convincing arguments advanced for such a move, little consultation, and no possibilities to test the new system prior to its use in such an important event. We hope therefore that the General Assembly will take account of our arguments here, and will not consent to make permanent this damaging change.

An eight game rapid chess match of Fischer Random Chess between Michael Adams (England) and Peter Leko (Hungary) will be another first. The event will be supplemented by a match of man versus machine. Chessbase will take on Adams and Leko. There is also an opportunity to play Anand or Kramnik in a simul via an Internet auction at http://www.chesstigers.de. 20 boards from each of the 40 board simuls against Anand (Saturday, 23 June, 6.30 P.M.) and Kramnik (following day, 6.30 P.M.) are available to the highest bidder.
