The remainder of the book contains just about everything between these two extremes, including a selection of puzzles based around themes. £16.99/$24.95

1) Introduction

My thanks to Bert Hollmann, Henri Spijkerman, Richard Palliser, Mihajlo Savic, John Henderson, Pablo Sierra, Laszlo Nagy, Adam Raoof, Eirik Gullaksen, Axel Fritz, Steve Laios, Javier Rubio Doblas, Przemek Jahr, Hassan Khaled, Radu Chirila, Alan Cowderoy, Bill Friesema, Bartlomiej Macieja, John Henderson and all those who helped with this issue.

This has been a very busy week of chess. The Amber tournament always provides interesting chess and the first three rounds are presented here. The Chinese victory against the US may be seen as the start of their charge for domination of chess in ten years time. I think its clear that they will become more of a force in the next few years but perhaps there is a little way to go. Many of their juniors have over-inflated ratings according to Leonard Barden and at the under 12 level he believes the better players are from India and Russia. Nevertheless I don't think we can doubt the Chinese seriousness in the long term. I've had a lot of letters this week. I'm considering a seperate letters column away from this magazine section. In the past I tried to only publish letters that were news stories in themselves, this has slipped in recent times, one way or another I'll have to come up with a solution.

Hope you enjoy this issue

Mark

15) Ivan Zanic Memorial

Mihajlo Savic reports: the IGM "Ivan Zanic Memorial" tournament took place in Stara Pazova (30 km. North of Belgrade) 9th-19th March 2001. The event was a chance for 7.Jugoslav players as well as Aleksandar Colovic (MKD) and Julian Radulski (BUL) to achieve GM and IM norms. After an excellent start with six wins in the first six rounds, the youngest player, fifteen year old Veljko Jeremic led the tournament throughout (and with it a GM norm). Radulski needed two wins in two last rounds to achieve his GM norm. The Chief Arbiter was Mihajlo Savic.

17) Zwolle Weekender

Henri Spijkerman reports: There was a four way tie for first prize at the end of the tenth annual KPMG weekender (9-11 March in Zwolle, The Netherlands). IGM's Erik van den Doel, Friso Nijboer, Bogdan Lalic and Chinese IM Li Shilong all finished on 5 points. After five rounds Van den Doel and Lalic were ahead of the competition by half a point. Playing each other in the last round they decided on a quick draw, thus enabling Nijboer and Li Shilong to catch up by winning their last game.

Khalifman Transcript

A transcript of Khalifman's ICC question and answer session is available. He talks at length on how he believes the FIDE Championships are the only one but isn't a craven FIDE loyalist. For instance he is not a supporter of the new FIDE time rate. He talks of the current big three (Kasparov, Kramnik and Anand) and how he feels he probably belongs in the next grouping of around 10 players (I agree). His objection to FIDE ratings. Why he isn't disappointed at being ignored by Corus (Why doesn't Khalifman get more invites? It puzzles me even in broken English he's a better ambassador for the game than many and he's playing well.) and how he believes Anand will not have sufficient recovery time to put in his best performance in Wijk aan Zee.
