1) Introduction
----------------

My thanks to Kevin O`Connell, Shay Bushinsky, Andrew Kinsman, Bob Wade,
Chris Dunworth, Wlodek Proskurowski, Michael Niermann, Norbert Friedrich,
Anjo Anjewierden (do you like the new layout?) Lars Zwisler and Otto Borik
for their help in preparing this issue.

Just about caught up after the major effort for the Botwinnik issue
last week. Many thanks to all who wrote in appreciation, I was most
touched.

I have left out a fax of Bobby Fischer's that has been floating around
for over a week now. Most people think it legally too hot to touch.
Anyhow the style is pure Fischer, there wasn't much doubt even though
some were dubious about it to start with. So he's still in Hungary but
not playing, a shame.

A very concentrated issue with a lot of top class events. 1. e4 e5
players as black must be getting fed up with Kasparov as he wheeled
out the Evans Gambit again. What has he against the Two Knights? was
a sage remark from someone on the internet, no doubt we will find out...

Hope you enjoy this issue.

Mark

2) VSB Euwe Memorial Tournament Amsterdam
--------------------------------------

This tournament looks as though it ought to be a procession for
Kasparov. He survived a tricky first game where maybe he was a
lot worse as black against Lautier, since then he has brought
out the Evans Gambit to humiliate Piket and simply steamrollered
Topalov on the black side of a Sicilian.

An exciting and strong tournament finished in Spain last week.

is just one game missing Salov, Valery - Shirov, Alexei 1/2

5) IV Torneo Magistral de la Comunidad de Madrid
---------------------------------------------

My thanks to Kevin O'Connell for the gamescores. He is there with
his "Intelligent Chess Display system" which automatically records
the games as they are being played. The event is being played
in a building belonging to ONCE. The Spanish blind association
who also administer the Spanish National Lottery.

Short and Timman are having a miserable time. Short losing horribly
to Polgar in one game I have examined.

Crisis, Chaos, Collapsing teams
-------------------------------

After the death of H. Jellisen (Manager of Bayern Muenchen) a lot
of things in german chess begin to break down. It seems
that the champions of 94/95 and strongest club over the
last years will not participate in 95/96 again. Though
Bayern Muenchen as a club has become very rich through
their soccer-team, it is said that they do not want to support
chess activities anymore. The death of Jellisen maybe was a welcome
opportunity for this decision :-(

Furthermore the other Munich team (SC Muenchen 36) should
be involved in "financial unregularities". I am not an insider
but there are rumours that Jellisen has also put (private ?) money to them,
which is now missing. During the last rounds some of SC 36 players
refused to play, because they could not be paid anymore.

Again this points to the structural illness of chess in general. Too
many events and acitivities depend on influencial and rich individuals.
--------
Additional news. There will be a meeting this week in which
new sponsors may be found for the Munich teams, in which
case they will continue next year. More news when available.

Not that I know of. Perhaps our readers know better, let us know then.
Of course, both Garry and Judit played many fine endgames. Here is one of the
early ones by Polgar.
