1) Introduction

My thanks to Gerhard Hund, António Pedro Pereira, John Henderson, Michael Atkins, Albert Silver, Przemek Jahr, Sam Nicholls, Gunnar Bjornsson, Nigel Johnson, Boris Gelfand and all those who helped with this issue.

Its just one World Chess Championships after another these days. Less than a month after Kasparov lost his Braingames title to Vladimir Kramnik most of the rest of the best players in the World are in New Delhi trying to win the FIDE title. Beyond the observations that Anand as top seed should be favourite and that Adams has reached the semi-finals both times this format has run I'm not going to be foolish enough to make predictions this time. I hope for good quality chess and excitement however incompatable these hopes might be.

Hope you enjoy this issue

2) FIDE World Chess Championships

The FIDE World Chess Championships take place in New Delhi, India and Tehran, Iran, 25 November - 27 December 2000. The FIDE Championships first round got underway on time. The first round today produced no surprise results (the closest was Lautier's loss with white to Leitao) and the main interest will surely come on the 30th when the top seeds enter the event in round 2.

The sixth edition of the Lisbon Chess Festival took place 18th to 26th November 2000 in Lisbon, Portugal. There was a four way tie on 7.5/9 between Ildar Ibragimov (first on tie-break), Mladen Palac, Lenier Dominguez and Eric Van den Doel. My thanks to António Pedro Pereira for the news. Hopefully there will be some round 9 games in time for next week.

5) Norkom European Masters

Luke McShane won the event with 5/6 after a last round win over Malcolm Pein during a sudden death finish. Pein's flag fell when Luke had approx 30 seconds left. Robert Bellin, Alexander Baburin and Eduardas Rozentalis were amongst those half a point behind.

The Norkom European Masters in Kilkenny, Ireland took place this weekend. Participants: Grandmasters Luke McShane, Eduardas Rozentalis (Lithuania) and Alexander Baburin as well as IMs Jon Shaw (current Scottish champion), Malcolm Pein (Daily Telegraph chess columnist), Robert Bellin, Mark Heidenfeld (current Irish champion) and WIM Jana Bellin and many of the strongest local players. A non-playing guest for the weekend was be former world champion and honorary captain of Kilkenny Chess Club, Boris Spassky.

John Henderson reports: THE magical chess atmosphere of Kilkenny in Ireland was enough to lure a truly international field to do battle for the Norkom European Masters at the weekend.

With generous sponsorship yet again from Norkom, the Dublin-based software group that's due for an early New Year floatation on the Nasdaq, the tournament had an added attraction this year of the grandiose surroundings of the recently renovated Kilkenny Castle, one of Ireland's foremost mediaeval sites, as the perfect playing venue.

And, as if that wasn't enough to whet your appetite, the 10th World Chess Champion Boris Spassky, Honorary President of Kilkenny Chess Club, officially opened the tournament, and also made it his job to personally welcome the competitors.

Despite the fact that the event was clashing with other tournaments on the chess calendar, the enthusiastic organisers yet again managed to maintain the tournament's high standards with a cosmopolitan field headed by the Lithuanian GM Eduards Rozentalis. Also included in the line-up is the Russian-Irish GM Alexander Baburin, England's youngest GM Luke McShane, Irish champion Mark Heidenfeld, nine-year-old chess prodigy David Howell and last, but not least, the Scottish champion John Shaw.

Next week full details of the full final standings and more games.

8) National Chess Congress 2000

Michael Atkins reports: 596 players came for the National Chess Congress held this past Thanksgiving weekend in Philadelphia. Long a regular stop on the US chess scene, the tournament is always a good one and was organized and directed by the Continental Chess Association.

Internet coverage: http://www.wizard.net/~matkins/ncc/ncc.htm

There was a 4-way tie for first with 5-1 in the Open section. GMs Alex Shabalov, Alex Goldin, Gennadiy Zaitchik and FM Adrew Karklins led the pack, closely followed at 4.5 by GMs Lenoid Yudasin, Michael Rohde and Alex Stripunsky, IMs Jay Bonin, Larry Kaufman and Dean Ippolito, FM Stas Kriventsov and David Vigorito and Mark Geist. 54 games are included in the pgn file, including a 5th round 21 move queen sac game played by Shabalov against GM Alex Wojtkiewicz.

I'll throw the next question out to the chess community at large, and the religous chess community in particular: Is there anything within the Seventh Day Adventist philosophy which would translate into a religous objection to the use of a time delay clock on the grounds that is violates a fundamental law of god by delaying time? Personally, i dont think having a extra 5 seconds to think before the clock starts ticking is tantamount to delaying or stopping time, but what do I know :)

9) Semi-Finals Brazilian Chess Championships

Albert Silver reports: The 2nd Brazilian Semi-Final took place November 23rd-26th 2000 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in the sumptuous Hotel Gloria. The Hotel Gloria is one of the oldest and most elegant hotels in Rio, and was a welcome venue for the event, leaving one with great expectations as to the event itself. The tournament, using the odd time control (though common in Brazil) of 23 moves in 1 hour and 1h/KO, boasted a prize fund of R$5000 (roughly US$2700) and 4 qualifying spots for the Brazilian Finals to be played at a later date. Unfortunately, a few very odd details marred what could have been a great event. The first thing is the complete lack of support to register the games of this event. No good reason was given, and furthermore, efforts were made to prevent volontary efforts to do this. As a consequence, the few games that will be made available (more next week) were done through the independent efforts of Carlos Carvalho (many thanks Carvalho!) and myself. This also means that many great battles of both sporting and theoretical interest will no doubt never be publicly available. Although this was hard to understand, even harder to understand was a rather odd item in the tournament's regulations stating that should any of the top 4 places in the tournament be won by a player who was previously qualified for the Brazilian Finals, then the qualifying spot would NOT go to the next in the final ranking, but would be distributed at the discretion of the Brazilian Federation. Needless to say, the players involved were quite upset at this, and a petition was drawn to protest. Afterall, if the determining factor to choose a participant in the national championship is NOT their competetive chess ability, then the question stands: by what criteria will the Brazilian Federation choose the participants?

The event was won by top seed, IM Eduardo Limp, who despite a stumble in round 5 against David Sokolik, played with great efficiency and scored 6 points in 7 winning his last round game against FM Edson Tsuboi. Following him in order, all with 5.5 and occupying places 2-6, were FM Sadi Dumont, FM Edson Tsuboi (only needing a draw in the last round to secure a tournament victory), IM Everaldo Matsuura, FM Ricardo Teixeira, and FM Luiz Loureiro. Then at 7th came Alvaro Aranha with 5 in 7, who played the tournament of his life, and theoretically should also have been looking at a spot in the Brazilian Finals. Only theoretically, because Limp, Dumont, and Matsuura, came to the tournament previously qualified for the finals and took places 1, 2, and 4. However, as things stand, FM Teixeira, FM Loureiro, and Alvaro Aranha, may only enjoy a small moral victory. The line-up of the Brazilian Finals will show what is decided.

Final Standings:
 1. Eduardo Limp 2469 6/7
 2. Sadi Dumont FM 2324 5.5

11) Polish Championships Semi-Finals

The Polish Chess Championships Semi-Finals took place in Polanczyk 4th-12th November 2000. The top four players from the men's and women's sections qualified. Aleksander Czerwonski was unlucky in missing out on tie-break in a four way tie for three places in the men's event. My thanks to Przemek Jahr.

12) British Rapidplay Championships

The British Rapidplay Championships took place November 18th-19th 2000 in Leeds (Brunswick Building, Leeds Metropolitan University). The event produced a genuine shock result when 13-year-old Ameet Ghasi shared first place with GM Aaron Summerscale.

Congress secretary Sam Nicholls reports: Almost 400 players competed in this popular weekend rapidplay tournament, which was once again hosted by Leeds. Though lacking a sponsor this year, there was still over 3,000 pounds in prize money to play for.

In the Open section, there were 47 entrants, including five grandmasters, eight international masters and five Fide masters. A major upset occurred when 13-year-old Ameet Ghasi from Birmingham shared first prize with grandmaster Aaron Summerscale. He lost only one game to Mind Sports gold medallist Danny Gormally and produced a stunning finish to win his last four games (beating two previous rapidplay champions in the process). This result compares with Nigel Short's achievement in finishing joint first (with Nunn & Bellin) in the 1979 British Championship as a fourteen-year-old. Ghasi's record was as follows:

Round 1 Mark Ferguson IM 220 ½, Round 2 David Hubbard 175 1, Round 3 Matthew Turner IM 227 ½, Round 4 Simon Williams IM 219 ½, Round 5 David Walker FM 211 1, Round 6 Desmond Tan 208 1, Round 7 Danny Gormally IM 238 0, Round 8 Matthew Anderton 186 1, Round 9 James Sherwin IM 202 1, Round 10 Keith Arkell GM 243 1 and Round 11 Mark Hebden GM 258 1. So Ghasi lost just one game to GM Danny Gormally in round 7 and his reaction was to win all his remaining games.

16) Open letter from Boris Gelfand

TWIC always welcomes letters. No publication is guaranteed but the magazine can act as a forum for chess issues of the moment. The views expressed in these letters are those of the authors not of TWIC or Chess & Bridge Ltd.

Open letter from Boris Gelfand

In recent interviews of Garry Kasparov on Kasparovchess.ru and in Russian daily "Sport-express" Mr. Kasparov made few statements about my role in his match against Vladimir Kramnik and I would like to clarify few things. Unfortunately original English version of one of these interviews isn't available in print, so I am forced to retranslate it from Russian, when quoting Mr. Kasparov.

Mr. Kasparov claims that as we had together training session in 1998 it should have prevented me from working with other players in the world. However I never was his trainer (or somebody's else), but just a sparring-partner, as well as he was mine. During my career I had a lot of sparring-partners (this is the most common way of working on chess for majority of top players, as it allows chessplayers to enhance each other with new ideas and besides, very few can afford to have a personal second.) Clearly, it goes without saying that any ideas found in the joint analysis can never be shared with any third party and a possibility to break this rule never crossed my mind.

Mr. Kasparov said: "When people are working for money - there is no disgrace in doing that. So Kramnik had worked in my team during my match with Anand. … However … some of his [Kramnik's] colleagues were helping him apparently because of "especially warm feelings" towards me. … This is beyond my ethical code. In my opinion Gelfand has a different one." This statement clearly shows that great ex-champion obviously lacks understanding of what friendship is. I can only feel pity to him in this respect.

In another place he states "He [Gelfand] broke all the moral grounds". I want to reply to these groundless accusations.

For the last 8 years we have been regularly exchanging ideas with Vladimir Kramnik, helping each other in preparation for different tournaments as well as during the tournaments if we play together. Whenever one of us is playing in the event, we help each other through telephone. Taking this chance, I want to thank Vladimir for countless ideas he shared with me that helped me to win a lot of games. This is well-known to everybody in chess world, including Garry Kasparov. Garry Kimovich himself in his interviews added myself to a team of Kramnik's advisors during Kramnik-Shirov match, whereas in fact I was not Kramnik's second during that match and didn't take part in any of training sessions which were held before both Kramnik-Shirov and the match just finished . As far as the differences in ethical code are concerned, Mr. Kasparov indeed proved his thesis in Novgorod 1997, when Vladimir had to beat me in the last round to catch Garry and win tournament on tie-break. After drawing quickly his own game Kasparov started to make statements in front of press and public that our game with Kramnik is a fix and I am going to lose the game to let my friend win a tournament. Fortunately, after 7 hour long defense I managed to draw that game. Yet we are still waiting for apology

Also in the above-mentioned interviews Kasparov attributes novelty in 6th game and Be2 somewhere ( I guess in 12th game) to me. I take it as a compliment, as I would be proud to invent such novelties. However this is a fruit of preparation of Vladimir Kramnik and his 3 great seconds and I first time saw these ideas when analyzing these games of the match.

At the end of his interview to the "Sport-Express" Mr. Kasparov says: "The time of pragmatical market has come. What is your company worth? How much do your stocks cost? … And now to chess world came champion who symbolizes this cynical and pragmatical approach. … Many don't like style of Kramnik's games which give no pleasure to people." Cheap attacks, but still I would like to have at least a few names of those, who confessed to Garry Kimovich that they don't enjoy Kramnik's games. I personally do, as well as Kasparov himself did just few months ago.
