Kasparov against the World: Kasparov with Daniel King and a forward by Bill Gates
This new hardcover book documents the amazing chess game that the World Champion played against thousands of players online in 1999. It was the most deeply analyzed chess game in history and this book brings it all to life in a diary format full of anecdotes as well as variations. £19.95/$24.95

Kramnik's Repertoire 1.Nf3 : Khalifman.
The "Chess Stars Openings" series presents an entirely new approach to the study of chess openings, which can provoke the interest of chess players of all levels. Drawing examples from the games of today's leading grandmasters we present the principles of selection and successful employment of a harmonious opening repertoire, corresponding as close as possible to the style of a renown master. £14.99/$21.95

The Ultimate Chess Puzzle Book: John Emms
It is generally agreed that one of the best ways for a chess-player to improve is by studying tactics - and the best way to do this is by practising. This book provides a wealth of positions to test just about every facet of your tactical skills. The book begins with over 100 positions suitable for novices, and ends with 100 extremely tough puzzles, which will provide a mind bending challenge even for top-class players. The remainder of the book contains just about everything between these two extremes, including a selection of puzzles based around themes. £16.99/$24.95

Khalifman: Life and Games: Nesis The 1999 World Championship in Las Vegas produced a surprise winner - after a month-long battle, the Russian grandmaster Alexander Khalifman emerged from this gruelling knock-out event to become the 14th FIDE World Champion. £16.99/$24.95:

1) Introduction

My thanks to Gerhard Hund, Laszlo Nagy, Luis Santos, Luís Oliveira, John Henderson, Kasparovchess, Shay Bushinsky, ChessBase.com and all those who helped with this issue.

This week has been very quiet. Not a great surprise given that last week was the Olympiad and next week sees the start of the FIDE Championships. Alexander Khalifman's one year reign has been a good one. He's made a very good impression and has been a good advert for the game. Indeed apart from a shakey start when demolished by Peter Leko in a match at the start of the year he's enjoyed some of his best results of his career. This years championships will be the last under the current format, FIDE are having a rethink. After last years' events in Las Vegas I'm not going to be foolish enough to try and predict a winner.

Hope you enjoy this issue

IECG Cup

The IECG Cup VI preliminary stage. IECG Cup is an open tournament: players of any rating are merged together. So this is a nice opportunity to play a wide range of opponents. Subscriptions are open until September 15. Entries received after this date are used for a replacement list, which will be closed on October 1st. The tournament will be launched on October 1st, for a duration of 11 months. All the unfinished games will be adjudicated. During the preliminary phase, all participants take part in a 7 men, single round tournament (so 6 games to play). The 2 winners of each section will be entitled to play in the next stage, starting in October 2001. All games count for IECG rating, of course.
