1) Introduction

My thanks to Anjo Anjewierden, Ruben Casafus, Adolivio Capece, Ales Drinovec, Laszlo Nagy, Juan Sangés, inchess.com, Jan Vavrak, Manuel Glave, Axel Fritz, Marcel Juegel, Richard Furness and all those who helped with this issue.

Last week saw four draws in the Braingames World Chess Championships between Garry Kasparov and Vladimir Kramnik. With only seven games left and Kramnik having white in four of them its becoming increasingly clear that Kasparov can lose this match. I rate the chances 50-50 now. With only one decisive game out of the nine played so far we can expect probably only one or two decisive games more. The next player to win will probably take the match. As if this championship was not enough the 34th FIDE Chess Olympiad starts next Saturday. Whilst the absence of some of the best players in the world in recent years has slightly reduced its lustre it is still one of the greatest of all chess events.

Hope you enjoy this issue

Mark

2) Braingames World Chess Championships

The Braingames World Chess Championships started on Sunday 8th October 2000. The 16 game match which takes place on Sundays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays between 8th October-4th November. Time control 40 moves in 2 hours, 20 moves in 1 hour, followed by 30 minutes + 10 seconds delay per move (that is the ten seconds doesn't act cumulatively).

The Braingames World Chess Championships saw another four games this week. Game six was another Queens Gambit Accepted. This time Kramnik played aggressively keeping queen's on and pushing his h-pawn to open up Kasparov's kingside. For a while it seemed this might just be playing into Kasparov's hands but somehow he went astray and by move 40 Kramnik was better. On move 42 Kasparov play ...g5 and his position became critical, if not lost. Kramnik may have missed a direct winning shot with 50.Qf8 but soon after in a vastly superior position he seemed to go wrong and Kasparov forced a draw on move 66. Kasparov was reported to be ecstatic after this close escape. Could this be a turning point in the match? Well the next game saw Kasparov play the English again and Kramnik chose to defend it with a line he last played as a 12 year old. After only 11 moves Kasparov offered a draw which was accepted. There have been shorter World Championship games but they were not during critical phases of the match. Kasparov said he would have taken a time out if one had been available before the game. The 8th game was Kasparov's first dangerous novelty of the match. He switched openings again and played the Nimzo-Indian. The players followed a blitz game they played in 1998 (with Kasparov white and Kramnik black) until Kasparov uncorked 16. ...Nc7. Kramnik almost straight away found himself on the defensive as Kasparov wound up the pressure. At the price of a pawn Kramnik bailed out into an ending with serious winning chances for Kasparov. Having said that Kramnik's conduct of the rest of the game suggests his decision was right, he played confidently and after the amazingly careless 35. ...Rd2+ Kramnik had it worked out right to the draw, two pawns down three moves later. Kasparov claimed rather melodramatically that his annotation of the move would have been Rd2????? and following game nine said that 35. ...Kg6 offered serious winning chances. Kramnik shot back that it was still a draw. Game nine and another Berlin. What had Kasparov's opening laboritory come up with? We'll have to wait to find out because Kramnik was the first to vary with 9. ...h6 and although the position was again uncomfortable for a few moves Kramnik equalised. Kasparov suggested afterwards that Kramnik could have tried for a win but concrete suggestion as to how this might have been achieved have been pretty thin on the ground.

The main off the board story was the expulsion of John Henderson as a journalist from the venue during game six. In the first few games relations between the press and organisers rapidly degenerated over what the journalists saw as petty restrictions on their activities. Relations between John and the organisers became especially poor. The organisers finally decided to expel him after his report on round 4 BRAINDEAD@BRAINGAMES on the chesscenter wcc mini-site. In addition John was also reporting for CNN and the Scotsman. The organisers including Ray Keene confronted John Henderson shortly after the start of play and "asked" him to leave with a very large bouncer standing by whilst he packed up. I ran into John as I was on my way to the venue. It was the talk of the press room with strong support from all the other journalists I spoke to both of his right to write what he liked and over the heavy handed methods used to expel him.

7) Italian Championships

The Italian Chess Championships 2000 took place October 9th-17th in San Vincent. Igor Efimov and Ennio Arlandi finished with 5.5/8 (Carlo Rossi had to withdraw after losing his first two rounds due to illness but his results counted for norm purposes). Arlandi took the title as Efimov doesn't have an Italian passport he couldn't win the title. They were a point and a half clear of the rest of the field. My thanks to Adolivio Capece for his help.

As reported last week October 14th-15th 2000 saw the first two rounds of the new Bundesliga season. In a new departure many of the games were being covered live on the internet. The stars who played in the first weekend were top ten players Alexander Morozevich (with a 2-0 record), Alexei Shirov (with a draw and a win) and Michael Adams (win and a loss to Mladen Muse rated 2510). SG Porz, Solingen, Lubeck, Godesberg and Tegernsee all started with two match wins. The games that took place in Wattenscheid (Castrop Rauxel) are now available my thanks to Axel Fritz for those.

Marcel Juegel reports that Alexei Shirov gave his 2nd internet simul on the USCF internet server (http://www.uschesslive.com). There were 19 participants each of whom had won a USCF-Rapid-qualifier in order to get the chance to play Shirov. The level of opposition was pretty strong and Shirov drew five games (given in the pgn section) and won 14 in the the event which lasted 4 hours.

17) More legal action

Chris Depasquale has lost legal action against the Australian Chess Federation (ACF) which sought to give him a chance of playing for Australia in the Olympiad in Turkey.

The ACT Supreme Court decided in favour of the ACF. Mr Depasquale had sought declarations from the Court that the decision of the ACF in selecting or ratifying the selection of the Olympiad team was invalid, and that he should have been selected as a member of the team. The Court found that the Selection Committee had properly carried out its task in accordance with the Selection by-laws and declined to make those declarations.
