1) Introduction

My thanks to My thanks to Søren Søgaard, Axel Fritz, Laszlo Nagy, Gyuricza Gabor, Sune Berg Hansen, David Llada, Andrzej Filipowicz, Lothar Karrer, Charles Milton Ling, Gernet Isola, Yvette Nagel Seirawan and all those who helped with this issue.

The Najdorf Chess Festival sees the return of Anatoly Karpov to tournament chess after a long break. He lies in second place but did have a tremendous scare in the first round when he had a lost position against lowly rated Diego Flores. Judit Polgar and Viktor Bologan lead. The countdown to the Braingames World Chess Championships have started and TWIC has a mini-site that will cover the event. We've changed servers which should provide a much faster downloads than before. The US Championships start tonight, its also a zonal for the FIDE World Championships of 2001.

Hope you enjoy this issue

Mark

2) Miguel Najdorf Chess Festival

The final stages of the Miguel Najdorf Chess Festival are well underway. The final all-play-all runs September 18th-26th 2000. This was the final stage after an innovative set of qualification events to produce six of the ten players. Diego Flores would never have been invited to such event and in the first round he had ex-World Chess Champion Anatoly Karpov in big trouble before blundering and eventually losing. After seven rounds Judit Polgar and Viktor Bologan lead on 5.5/7 half a point clear of Karpov. Milos, Gilberto - Pierrot, Facundo was postponed from round 6.

Olympic Village Chess Exhibition

The FIDE Olympic Exhibition took place September 24th in the Olympic Village in Sydney. There were two rapidplay games contested between Alexei Shirov and Viswanathan Anand and attended by FIDE President Kirsan Iljumzhinov and FIDE officials such as David Jarrett, Emmanuel Omuku, Florencio Campomanes, Pawlina and Sedenova.

Alexei Shirov has written to me about the problems he had travelling to take part as I didn't get the story right last week. His journey started in Madrid where he found upon arrival at the airport his flight was overbooked. This meant that rather than taking his planned direct flight he had to take an indirect root Madrid-London and then the later flight London-Sydney arriving at his hotel five hours before the match was supposed to start. His problems didn't end there. After being woken in time to get to the exhibition he found that the taxi driver first of all didn't know the way and was even starting to run out of petrol by the time he arrived at the village. When he arrived he was requested to start straight away. Even with all these problems he was very happy with the way he played. He believes that through this exhibition chess has made an important step towards becoming an Olympic event. Bridge is looking to be an event in Salt Lake City 2002 and if chess makes it as an Olympiad event it is likely to be in the Winter Games. There were two rapidplay games both of which were drawn.

5) European Club Cup

The XVI European Club Cup takes place in Bosnia September 24th-30th 2000. The event is of a different format this year with one event of seven rounds rather than the shorter qualification events over three days that have proved extremely controversial year after year. The event has a number of strong players taking part. In round 1 Vassily Ivanchuk was defeated by Christian Bauer in the surprise of the round. There are 34 clubs taking part.

12) Braingames Resignation

Malcolm Pein (he is managing director of Chess and Bridge sponsors of TWIC) was the Technical Director of the Braingames World Chess Championships which start in October in London. On Friday 22nd of September he released the following press statement:

Malcolm Pein resigns as Technical Director of the World Chess Championship

With great regret I have to announce my resignation as Technical Director of the World Chess Championship between Garry Kasparov and Vladimir Kramnik to be held this October in London. This is due to serious professional differences with the management of Braingames Network PLC.

I have enjoyed working with the players. The fact that they are friends off the board has helped enormously. We have waited five years for Garry to defend his title and I am sure this contest will live up to our expectations. I am looking forward to every move.
