1) Introduction
----------------

My thanks to: Annette and Otto Borik (Schach Magazin 64)
for the games from Riga, Vadim Kaminsky (Compuserve) for the
games and report from the New York Open. Bob Wade, Bosko Grove,
Wlodek Proskurowski, John Roycroft, Shay Bushinsky for reports from
events in Israel, Flemming Jensen (from Under Uret a new Danish
chess BBS) for the games and report from the Danish Championships,
Sam Sloan, Richard Reich and Josh Manion for a correction from
the New York Open, Jerome Bibuld, Dirk Jonscher, Norbert Friedrich,
Einar Karlsson, Ashok Waran, Dirk Jonscher, Jo Zahnerand,
ChessAssistant (Inform Systems) for their review of theory.
Also to Roberto Alvarez who always comes up with the surprising!

A wide variety of events Worldwide this week. This must be one
of the busiest times with many Zonals going on aswell as a
couple of category 18 events! I hope to have the remaining games
from Riga (please treat the round 10 games I have as unconfirmed)
aswell as a substantial amount from Dos Hermanes.

2) PCA Super-Classic Riga. Tal Memorial
------------------------------------

My thanks to Annette and Otto Borik (Schach Magazin
64) for E-Mailing to me the first 9 rounds of Riga.
(and the hard work of typing in of the games of course!)
I gather their source doesn't work at the weekend so
the next update will probably be on Monday. Also to
Anjo Anjewierden for the tournament table utilities.

This event clashes with the 7th Dos Hermanes tournament.
It has weakened both events, even to the extent that
they couldn't raise a 12th player here. (Shirov
withdrew due to a dispute with the Latvian Federation. I
gather that some (justly or not) believe that this was
engineered on purpose. We'll have to see the comments
of the players.

According to the Guardian the tournament started in
contraversial style with Kasparov being given draw
number 1 and the bye in the first round. This was
so he could celebrate his 32nd birthday. Kasparov
should probably have thought about how this might
look, if he is prepared to exert special influence
over something as minor as this, what does it say
for the rules in World Championship matches? Does
he get his way there too? Many of the players in the
tournament were not happy.

Kasparov only requires a draw in the last round to win
the event as Ivanchuk has finished the tournament and
Anand is a point behind. The only question is how hard
he will push against his bete noir Gulko. My guess is
very hard. Of course the highlight (it has already
gone round the World) is Kasparov's victory against
Anand in an Evans Gambit. This is annotated in the
Chess Assistant theoretical section. (use the top version
unless you have ChessAssistant)

victory at Linares last year.

4) Western Class championships - (information from Sam Sloan)
---------------------------------------------------------

FINAL STANDINGS - 6 rounds
--------------------------

Master Section:
  Walter Browne (2652)  			5.5;
  Artak Akopian (2344)  			5.0;
  Emmanuel Perez (2397) & Larry D. Evans (2350) 4.5;
  Craig Mar (2507)      			4.0;

Expert Section:
  Agnis Kaugars (2140)      				5.0;
  Daniel Burkhard (2159) & Barry Nelson (2146)  	4.5;
  David Herscovici (2115) & Gaudencia Delacruz (2100) 	4.0;

The Western Class Championships were organized by the Continental Chess
Association and directed by Carole Dorsch.

Thanks also to Gabriel Sanchez for the corrected gamescores
(see the games section).

This event saw a creditable performance from 11 year old
Jordy Mont-Reynaud. (last year he temporarily held the
record for youngest male master in US history before being
superceded by Vinay Bhat (10!)) He defeated IM Anthony Saidy
in the Master division here. Saidy had played and lost to
Jordy in a 5 minute game and knew that his opponent had
to be taken seriously, yet still lost to "some sort of Grunfeld"
(Saidy). Saidy in fact offered a draw on move 25 but this was rejected.

5) New York Open by Vadim Kaminsky
-------------------------------

Venue: Radisson Hotel, Newark International Airport, New Jersey
Dates: Round 1 April 12
        Rounds 2-3 April 13
	Rounds 4-5 April 14
	Rounds 6-7	April 15
	Rounds 8-9 April 16.

Jonathan Yedidiah's 6-3 score not only picked up a $2,000 prize for top
under 2400 (FIDE), but also earned him an IM norm. Josh Manion's
5.5-3.5 also earned an IM norm.

(By the way there is a correction (thanks to Richard Reich and
Josh Manion, the player concerned) I posted Svidler-Manion (3)
last week, I'm afraid that, exciting as no doubt this game was, it
wasn't the game that Josh Manion remembers playing! So the
true game is included this week.

Also the tournament was actually held in Newark, New
Jersey for the first time, despite the name New York Open. I'm
not going to change the headers, I'll keep it consistant, even
though strictly wrong. Mark Crowther)

Joel Benjamin won his last game (from Nick de Firmian) and tied for 2nd place.
Pavel Blatny played very solidly using the exchange French defence in the
last round against Gabriel Schwartzman. He offered a draw after only a
few moves which Gabriel turned down. Gabriel then proceeded to lose, costing
him a lot of money.

6) New York Open Blitz Championship by Vadim Kaminsky
--------------------------------------------------

(Report is based on the information from the Marshall Chess
Club administration.)

Blatny, Dlugy, Van Wely win New York Blitz Championship:
--------------------------------------------------------

Nine IM's, Seventeen GM's compete in speed chess spectacular!

On April 17th the Marshall Chess Club hosted a tournament like no other
it has ever had. The New York Open ended the previous day,
and thirty-five battle-weary Masters, among them over nine International
Masters (IM's) and no less than seventeen (!) Grandmasters (GM's), flocked
to the historic Greenwich Village town house for some serious R & R -
Caissa style! The chessplayers's culmination to the annual Super Swiss
Tournament was (what else?) a Super Swiss Five Minute Tournament.

The New York Blitz Championship was a seven-round, double-round blitz
tournament with $1,700 in prizes. GM Max Dlugy of Englewood, New Jersey;
Loek van Wely of the Netherlands and Pavel Blatny of Czech Republic shared top
honors in this great event, each finishing with 10 points out of 14 games in
41-player Open Section. This was a true double-header for Blatny, who just the
day before won the $10,000 First Prize at the (slower-paced) New York Open.
He also blitzed the field Monday with a spectacular 2778 tournament performance
rating, although Dlugy and Van Wely were right behind with 2738 performances.
Each GM won $300. Raul Marquez from Ecuador won the $200 Under 2400 Prize for
finishing the tournament with 8.5-5.5 -- ahead of ten GM's.

Paul Dimitrijevic posted the tournament's best score, with 11.5 points and
a 2364 tournamnet performance rating en route to the $300 First Prize in
Under 2200 Section.

The tournament was made possible through the generous support of Blitz
aficionado Eric Horsboll of New Paltz, New York. With over 59 players,
the venerable Marshall Club was a wall-to-wall blitz mecca, but Steve Immitt and
International Arbiter Sophia Rhode kept the tournament running on track for the
Chess Center of New York, tournament oganizer. The Marshall Chess Club also runs
a slightly less intimidating five minute blitz tournament every Friday at 7:00 PM,
with $100 in prizes each week.

IM Sergio Slipak wins with "solid" chess
*********************************************************************
by Roberto Alvarez :roberto@alvarez.satlink.net

Halfway through the final round Hugo Spangenberg seemed destined
to win with a smashing final victory. The winner Sergio Slipak
had to meet Bent Larsen's Kings Bishop opening which always looked
like a draw. In the end both games ended in a draw, and thanks to
a better Bucholz score Slipak took the traditional International Open in
Mar Del Plata.

11) Southern African Zonal (FIDE Zone 4.3) by Jerome Bibuld
--------------------------------------------------------

The two highest rated players were upset in the first round
of the Southern African Zonal (FIDE Zone 4.3), which started
18 April. Aristotle Ramos (ANG), whose FIDE rating
is 2170, defeated George Michelakos (RSA), with a FIDE
rating of 2425. Ramos was black, but I haven't received the
game score. The difference in ratings between the players
involved in the other upset was not nearly so dramatic.
Black, however, won that game also, when Watu Kobese (RSA) -
- who played third board for Chess South Africa in the last
Olympiad -- overcame his first board, Deon Solomons.

The Zonal is taking place at the Mokolodi Nature Reserve in
Gaborone, Botswana, and will last through 28 April. All
members of the Zone, except Madagascar, are represented.
Following is the lineup, ordered by FIDE rating:

Name NAT	RATING TITLE
--------------------------------------------
Michelakis, George RSA 2425
Solomons, Deon RSA	2295
Kanengoni, Arnold T.	ZIM	2260
Kobese, Watu RSA	2250
Mueller, Leonhard	NAM	2235
Lungu, Nase ZAM	2205
Ramos, Aristotle	ANG	2170

Sitoe, Titos MOZ	unrated
Stevanovic, Nedja BOT	unrated
Li Ying, Patrick MAU	unrated

Kobese is still in the rating list as German.
The unrated players will count as being rated
at 2000 ELO.

The Chief Arbiter is Rupert Jones, Secretary of the Botswana
Chess Federation.

last didn't make it to these final stages

CHESSBASE FILE YOU WILL BE ABLE TO READ THE NOTES AND COMMENTS WHILE
PLAYING THROUGH THE GAME.I HAVE TRIED TO MAKE THE GAME AS INTERACTIVE AS
POSSIBLE AND WILL BE DEVELOPING THIS FEATURE OVER THE NEXT FEW TWICS.

LOUIS LA BOURDONAIS WAS FRANCE'S BEST PLAYER IN THE EARLY 1830s.IN 1834
HE PLAYED 6 MATCHES AGAINST ALEXANDER MCDONNELL (+45,=13,-27) WHICH CAUSED
MUCH INTEREST IN FRANCE AND ENGLAND. THESE MATCHES HAVE GONE DOWN IN CHESS
HISTORY AND ALL 85 GAMES OFFER ENTERTAINING CHESS.
HAVE FUN!

18) STUDIES by Wlodek Proskurowski
--------------------------------------------------------

There already exists a 5-man computer endgame database (Ken Thompson),
a 6-man kind has been looming over the horizon for some time now (L.Stiller
and N.Elkies). We are still human though, and upon reflection we find that
two of the most enjoyable endgames, that by Saavedra, 1895 [we have
a centennial to celebrate!] and Reti, 1921 (both closely related to over
-the-board events) use only four pieces. Moreover, because we are human
we are prone to commit errors (errare humanum est) even in this reduced
to minimum 4-man field. Have a look.

After 39.f5? 40.Kb4 a draw was agreed, while 39...Kd5 (the same as the
move 1.Kd5 in the Grigoriev's study above, with the reversal of colors)
  was clearly the winning move.
Feeling Schadenfreude anyone? Shame on you, we are only human, after all.
