1) Introduction

My thanks to Gerhard Hund, Jürgen Daniel, Christopher Lutz, "GM-Schach" site, Rubén Casafús and Adrián Roldán, Lanfranco Bombelli, Sinisa Joksic, Peter Kemner, Laszlo Nagy, Luis Oliveira, Carsten Hensel, Adam Raoof and all those who helped with this issue.

The 75th Anniversary Celebration of FIDE took place this week in Paris. I don't have any news of what happened but TWIC TV will cover the event with an interview with FIDE Champion Alexander Khalifman on Friday, we plan our first English version the following week. Later this week the European Team Championships start in Batumi, Georgia. The big story is the comparative weakness of the Russian team with only one player above 2600. It is said that the Russian team were not paid for their last appearance at the last Olympiad which may explain their absence. Nevertheless the event should be a good one. A match between Alexander Khalifman and Peter Leko to take place in the new year has been announced. Also there is a strong event taking place in York in the period coming up to Christmas, the strongest event in my area that I can remember in my lifetime. There was plenty of good chess played worldwide this week.

Hope you enjoy this issue

Mark

FIDE World Champion Alexander Khalifman has agreed to play Hungarian Peter Leko in a six game match in Budapest. This is Khalifman's first committment agreed to after he became World Champion. The match will run 3rd-9th Jan 2000 (restday 6th) in Budapest . Time control 40moves/2hours then 20 in 1 and the rest 30 min . The match will be held in the Ballsaal of Hotel Kempinski/Budapest. 4) Tkachiev-Van der Wiel Match, Cannes

The Miramar Beach Hotel was the venue for a ten game match between Vladislav Tkachiev and Dutchman John Van der Wiel. The match finished 7-3 to Tkachiev. Tkachiev recently defeated Alberto David 6-2 in October and was again an easy winner in this match. Van der Wiel at least had the consolation of a win in game 7 although Tkachiev restored his margin the following game with a nice win of the queen.

5) European Team Championships

The European Team Championships take place in Batumi, Georgia November 27th-December 8th 1999. The teams consist of 5 men (4 players and 1 reserve) for the men's competition and 3 women (2 players and 1 reserve) for the women's competition. The Ukranian and Hungarian teams looks the strongest and Russia has fielded one of their weakest ever teams (only one player over 2600 unless there are last minute changes) probably due to lack of sponsorship. Israel (with Gelfand now on top board), Armenia, England and Bulgaria look likely to be in the fight for the medals.

Below is the composition of some of the stronger men's teams in the championships. These lists are probably not final in some cases.

Armenia Akopian, Lputian, Vaganian and Minasian

Bulgaria Topalov, Kiril Georgiev, Delchev, Vladimir Georgiev and Genov.

Croatia Kozul, Palac, Zelcic, Cvitan and Stevic

Czech Republic Movsesian, Hracek, Babula, Oral and Vokac.

England Short, Speelman, Emms, Conquest and Chandler (Adams doesn't want to play in Eastern Europe after health problems last time he represented England and Sadler has now retired as a professional player).

Georgia Azmaiparashvili, Giorgadze, Sturua, Kacheishvili, Bagaturov.

Germany Jussupow, Huebner, Dautov, Lutz and Gabriel

Hungary Almasi, Chernin, Leko, Pinter and Polgar

Israel Gelfand, Smirin, Avrukh, Psakhis and Huzman

6) World Seniors

The World Seniors took in Gladenbach, Germany 7th-20th November 1999. Players included previous champions: GM Mark Taimanov (champion 1993, 1994), GM Alexej Suetin (1996), GM Janis Klovans (1997) and GM Vladimir Bagirov (1998). GM Ludek Pachmann played for the first time (finishing on 5.5/11).

1997 Champion Janis Klovans took the World Seniors title for the second time with he scored 9/11 to finish half a point clear of Vladimir Bagirov, Anatoly Lein and Mark Taimanov all on 8.5. There are a small number of games in the games section, does anyone access to more games? The women's event was won by WGM Tamar Khmiadashvili of Georgia.

7) 71st German Championships

The 71st German Chess Championships took place in Altenkirchen, Germany, November 11th-20th 1999. 2nd seed Robert Huebner won the event with a score of 7/9 ahead of Rustem Dautov on 6.5, Christopher Lutz, Klaus Bischoff, Karsten Mueller and Lev Gutman finished on 6 points. Top seed Artur Jussupow caught a cold and only finished in a tie for 8th place he was undefeated but only on 5.5 points.

The official site was Jürgen Daniel's new "GM-Schach" site (which will cover Bundesliga in detail and will have all the games). The GM-Schach team include Jürgen Daniel, Karl-Heinz Milaster (a programmer), the IGMs Artur Jussupow, Stefan Kindermann, Christian Gabriel and IGM Christopher Lutz and they will produce a lot of content in German. The site is at: http://www.gm-schach.de/ and their German Championship coverage was at: http://www.gm-schach.de/news/dm99/dm99.html)

German Championships by IGM Christopher Lutz

The 71st German Championship took place in Altenkirchen which is a small city in the so-called Westerwald, about 70 kilometres east of Cologne. While not as strong as the 1998 championship in Bremen, the field of participants nevertheless included 10 IGMs, among them players like Artur Yusupov, Rustem Dautov and Robert Hübner. It was the latter who scored a convincing victory with 7 points out of 9. Though he has been the leading German player in the 70s and 80s, it was only the second time (the first time was back in 1967 !) that Hübner became the winner of this competition. Second place was taken by Rustem Dautov with 6½ points, while Klaus Bischoff earned third place with 6 points on account of the best tiebreak. The pre-tournament favourite, Artur Yusupov, suffered from a cold and could only finish on shared 8th place.

10) Italian Championships

The 59th Italian Championships took place in Saint-Vincent, Aosta Valley November 13th-21st. Fabio Bellini was the winner of the Italian Championships. He finished level with Igor Efimov on 6 points in spite of losing to him in the final round of the event. Igor Efimov although resident in Italy doesn't have an Italian passport and thus could not win the title. My thanks to Lanfranco Bombelli.

11) Yugoslav Women's Championships

Sinisa Joksic reports on the 52nd Yugoslav Women's Championships which took place in Belgrade, October 18th-31st 1999.

Belgrade's Hotel "Slavija" was the venue for the 52nd Yugoslav Women's Championships. There were 14 participants however Alisa Maric and Natasa Bojkovic, two of Yugoslavia's best women players were missing. However instead of them three "new" Yugoslav women grandmasters played, Svetlana Prudnikova, Irina Chelushkina and Maria Manakova. All of them have married Yugoslavs have a family in their adopted country and lived here for several years. Prudnikova and Manakova played in the Championships for the first time and Chelushkina has already played once and won.

The pre-tournament favorite was Svetlana Prudnikova, two years ago she was the women's champion of Russia. She started very well but finished badly losing three games with the black pieces. For Irina Chelushkina it was the reverse story, she started very poorly, with the half point out of two games but then she recovered with a fantastic score of 10 points out of 11 games! She tooke the title of Champion title by a 1.5 point margin and had an 81% score. Maria Manakova, Suzana Maksimovic and Mirjana Maric all had good performances to share the second place. The surprise achiever of the event was Ana Benderac. She played quite original and creative chess on the way to scoring what should be her final IM-norm. The new grandmaster Sanja Vuksanovic will be disappointed with her performance. She is soon to be married (with a new family name of Kalevic) and could not complete the championships (she left three rounds before the end) because of her pregnancy. The championships as a whole saw a lot of fighting chess. Nobody finished unbeaten. More than 60% of the games finished decisively. The prize money varied from 30.000 down to 2.000 dinars. (Around 1750 DM to 120 DM on the black market in Yugoslavia)

Grandmaster Borivoje Ivkov, the women's team captain chose the national team, for next the European Team Championship (in Butumi, Georgia, starting November 29th). The team consists of GMs Alisa Maric, Natasa Bojkovic and Maria Manakova. The new national team captain, IM Nikola Karaklajic takes to Georgia GMs Branko Damljanovic, Zlatko Ilincic and Dragan Kosic along with IM's Ivan Ivanisevic and Dragan Solak.

12) Dutch Ladies Championships

The Dutch National Woman's Championship took place in Rotterdam (8-18th November). Amongst the participants were Zhao Qin Peng (2449), Tea Lanchava (2297) and Erika Sziva (2290). The event was a double round robin tournament with six players competing.

Peter Kemner reports: Erika Sziva (FIDE 2290) has won her 5th Dutch ladies title. She also won in 1992, 1994, 1996 and 1998. This year, in the strongest possible field she demonstrated her true class by not only scoring a wonderful 7,5 out of 10 , but also by remaining undefeated, and beating Zhao Qin Peng (FIDE 2449) on the way. The tournament was played in the Rotterdam Casino, 8-18th November. A wonderful setting with more people than ever attending. The tournament got some great exposure on Dutch commercial televison and National Radio. The ladies also had their own website this time, underlining the Dutch National Chess Association's promise to put more effort in promoting women's chess in Holland: http://www.schaakbond.nl/NKvrouwen99/ A knock-out tournament was held alongside, with 30 ladies competing, with two places at stake for next years top-group of six women. In the end the final was played between Jessica Harmsen (former Dutch ladies champion) and Caroline Slingerland. They were also the two highest rated women in the knock-out tournament. Slingerland won a four game rapid play-off for 1st and 2nd place: 2,5-1,5. Both women have qualified for next years finals though.

15) 9th "Ticino" Open

Sinisa Joksic reports on the 9th "Ticino" Open - The 2nd "Casino Admiral" Open:

Mendrisio is a nice town in the Italian part of Switzerland. Ticino is the host to a traditional open. This year 169 players, including 8 grandmasters, 10 IM's, 4 fms from 11 nations competed. The eldest player was GM Enrico Paoli (born January, 13, 1908) and the youngest was Rachel, the daughter of Benoit Perruchoud, born 1991. Dr. Paoli made 3.5/7 and Rachel 1.5 points. The schedule of the event was very tough with 7 rounds in 4 days over October 30th-November 2nd 1999. The games were played in a morning-afternoon schedule with only one hour between games. To win such a tournament you need a little luck. The great fighter, Joe Gallagher shared first place with Florin Gheorghiu (ROM) and Laszlo Somlai (HUN) but took the winner's trophy and the first-prize money due to a better "Bucholz" tie-break. In such an exciting tournament the standings changed virtually after every round. After the 4th round, for example, Pascal Vianin 100%, then he lost his three last games.

This is the second time this event has taken place in Ticino. Previously (from 1980-1989) the event was known as the "Challenge di Mendrisio" and it was played in Chiasso and Mendrisio. Two years ago, a new sponsor "Casino Admiral", supported the "Open Ticino" with the three top prizes. The local chess club finished second in the Swiss championships this year. In fact Mendrisio had been leading the Championships and The current good times for chess in Ticino is in no small part due to Sergio Cavadini, the main organizer of the international tournaments and the coach of the Mendrisio Chess Club. Next year "The 10th Open Ticino" will take place October 28th-31st 2000.

16) 28th International "Lazarevac" 1999

Sinisa Joksic: Ivan Ivanisevic, a 22 year old IM from Belgrade won the Category VIII tournament in Lazarevac and made his final GM norm. He missed a short norm in 11 round by drawing with Colovic. In last two rounds Ivanisevic beat Benkovic and Peev. Aleksandar Kovacevic, also was near a norm. He had chances to win against Vuckovic in the 11th round. The event was played in Lazarevac, a township of Belgrade, but 100 kilometers from the center. There were about 20 spectators daily whereas in Belgrade a few hundred could have been expected. Actually Belgrade's chess players had expected an Investbanka Super Tournament this years as did many of the world's best players. It is unclear who decided this event would be cancelled.
