1) Introduction

My thanks to Owen Williams, Chess in Iceland, Shahcom, Soren Bech Hansen, Videki Sandor, Mehrshad Sharif, BCF, Sibylle Heyme, Jon Speelman, Sinisa Joksic, John Henderson and all those who helped with this issue.

Thank goodness for the European Club Cup, without that it would have been an extremely quiet week indeed. There are no big GM tournaments running at the moment but there have been a number of interesting stories including Owen Williams reply to the Abraham press release last week.

Hope you enjoy this issue

Mark

2) Anand-Kasparov Match

Anand-Kasparov match, Owen Williams replies to the Kuruvilla Abraham press release to the Indian press published here last week.

WORLD CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP NOT CANCELLED

I have read the press release attributed to Mr. Kuruvilla Abraham, Manager of Vishy Anand, and it contains sufficient inaccuracies to warrant a response. It also makes a salacious attack upon my client which needs attention.

Mr. Abraham commences by saying that the match between Kasparov and Anand will not take place this year and next says "has been cancelled" and again in the third paragraph says "now stands cancelled". It is, therefore, Mr. Abraham who has jumped the gun and made a statement that should have come from Bessel Kok (Chairman) or Serge Grimaux (Promoter). What caused Mr. Abraham to rush into print with a cancelled statement is beyond my comprehension especially as it is my understanding that his client does not think the match is cancelled.

Next, Mr. Abraham compounds his errors by making a statement about a Silicon Valley corporation pulling out at the last minute due to a conflict of interest caused by the Kasparov-Microsoft match. This is pure fiction! The potential sponsor knew about the Microsoft match and I was with Garry when the Chairman of the potential sponsoring company said that the Microsoft match was not a problem to them.

Where does Mr. Abraham get this stuff? Perhaps he would be good enough to tell us?

Then comes a low blow as Mr. Abraham tries to lay the failure for no sponsorship on Garry Kasparov. The facts are that the committee took on the task of finding the site, sponsor and organization about nine months ago and soon turned the organization and the all important guarantees over to Mr. Grimaux. Serge Grimaux had his contracts out to both players well before Garry revealed that he "might" have a total sponsor for not just one but for many years. We cautioned them against stopping other sponsorship solicitations. This was done verbally and in writing.

If Mr. Abraham cares to check, he will discover that Serge and the committee went into this agreement a long time ago and at that time, led us to believe that they had excellent sponsorship prospects. To try and blame Garry is a very cheap shot indeed!

Errors are compounded in the last paragraph which reads "It is also unfortunate that Garry Kasparov went ahead with a press conference in London to announce that the championship was cancelled before the expiry of the extended organizing period given to Mr. Grimaux by all signatories to the agreement. All the signatories were bound by a clause of confidentiality, which Mr. Kasparov has not seen necessary to honor." The press conference in London was called by Microsoft and had nothing to do with the World Championship. The only question asked about the World Championship was whether Microsoft would be the sponsor? A Microsoft representative answered and not Garry, and a transcript of the conference is available. So now, we have no statement by Garry as described by Mr. Abraham. After the conference, Garry was asked privately about the match and he was very careful with his answers saying that he could not see the likelihood of the match taking place this year and what is important, at no stage did Garry say that the match was cancelled.

The last sentence of Mr. Abraham's release is insulting and if he is deliberately trying to kill off a potential match, then insulting Garry is the best way to set about it. I hope he will apologize.

10) BCF Book of the Year

The British Chess Federation have a book of the year competition. There is a short list of four, chosen by R B Edwards, M Fox and J Toothill. The books on the shortlist with the panel's comments are:

· Nunn's Chess Openings Nunn, Burgess, Emms &Gallagher Everyman £19.99 The distinguished team of writers set themselves the formidable task of a one volume encyclopedia in the rapidly changing world of opening theory. Using a combination of ruthless variation selection and modern computer analysis they have succeeded brilliantly. If you can take only one chess book to a tournament, this is the one.

· Secrets of Modern Chess Strategy John Watson Gambit £19.99 The subject matter is disclosed by the sub title: Advances since Nimzowitsch. Watson explores with great insight the changes in chess theory and practice since the writings of the great Russian master in the early 1930s. It is sufficient to say this volume is a worthy successor to Nimzowitch's My System.

· The Worlds Greatest Chess Games Burgess Nunn &Emms Robinson £9.99 The "Chertsey Team" have produced another good value volume under the Mammoth brand. Of course there will be arguments about the choice of the 100 games, ( what, no Morphy?) and the focus is on analysis rather than the background to the game, but this is by far the best games collection of its kind.

· World Champion at the Third Attempt Grigory Sanakoev Gambit £15.99 This collection of games covers the author's experiences at correspondence chess culminating in winning the World Title. Written from the perspective of an amateur player, none the less the quality of the annotations is such that they have been endorsed by no less an authority than the famous trainer Dvoretsky. An original and personal book.

13) UK Chess Circuit gets new sponsor

John Henderson reports: THE UK chess circuit received a massive boost with the announcement yesterday that the popular British Chess Federation's annual congress Grand Prix, which over the years has become an integral part of the chess scene, has a new sponsor, The Terence Chapman Group plc, the financial blue chip IT consultancy services and software group.

More than 20,000 chess players from throughout the UK take part in the Grand Prix. It has been held annually since 1974, and includes nearly 200 congresses ranging from Hastings, the national championships, to one day rapidplays and blitz tournaments.

The Terence Chapman Group Grand Prix will commence in the year 2000 and offers a total prize fund of 13,000 - a rise of 50% on the 1999 figure. This includes 10,000 for the open competition, with a 5,000 first prize, plus 3,000 for the subsidiary events.

The Terence Chapman Group, specialist providers to the financial sector, listed on the London Stock Exchange in July and has a high quality client base that includes major institutions such as Deutsche Bank, JP Morgan, and Prudential Bank.

No stranger to the chess scene himself, Executive Chairman Terry Chapman, now 43, was British Under 14 champion, London Under 18 champion and captain of the England Under 18 Glorney Cup team. At one time he was England's third strongest junior behind Jonathan Speelman and Jonathan Mestel, who both became GMs and British champions. Mr Chapman now plays competitively for the Oxford and Cambridge Club in the London Clubs League. He is the strongest player ever to head a UK public company.
