2) IX Ciudad de Pamplona

The "IX Ciudad de Pamplona" tournament (cat. XIII, Dec. 27-Jan.5th., free day Jan. 1st.) is underway reports Leontxo Garcia. The players are Alexander Morozevic, Xie Jun, Loek Van Wely, Emil Sutovsky, Michal Krasenkow, Miguel Illescas Cordoba, Luis Comas, Oscar de la Riva, Jesus de la Villa and Francisco Vallejo (who is 17 and the Spanish vice champion). The organisers idea is always to combine interesting foreign players with several Spanish players. They could get the cat. XV or XVI very easily with the same budget but they prefer to do it this way. Amongst the players who have participated in Pamplona in the past before becoming very famous are Kramnik, Topalov, the Polgar sisters, Bacrot, Ponomariov and Lautier.

In round one Francisco Vallejo Pons beat Loek Van Wely and Alexander Morozevich, who has had an excellent year started with a win. My thanks to Jesús J. Boyero for the games.

7) Oxford International Chess Festival

The 1st Oxford International Chess Festival took place in the Keble Room, Oxford Moat House Hotel, 14-23 December 1998. The event was organised by Adam Raoof.

The GM A event saw Julian Hodgson and Jonny Hector share first. Only after Hodgson was defeated in a theoretical line by Sutovsky (who generally had a disappointing event) and Hector beat Wells with black. In spite of this Hodgson still took the £4,000 first prize on tie-break.

The GM B event was won jointly by IMs Alexei Barsov and Colin Crouch, both on 6/9 and both of whom won with black in the final round. They however needed 7 points for a GM norm.

Harriet Hunt won the IM event with the necessary 7/9 for an IM norm. She was half a point clear of her brother Adam. Lawrence Cooper needed a win in the final round but lost to Angus Dunnington.

9) 6th AMBASSADOR OPEN - BERN

Sinisa Joksic reports: One of the most exciting Christmas tournaments is the "Ambassador open" playing in Bern, Switzerland. The name of the event comes from the host, the 4 star hotel "Ambassador", situatiated in a beautiful location with the magnificent views from the hills, over Bern.   This years event has 144 players, 6 grandmasters and 13 IMs. which is a record for the tournament. In the first three rounds there were some surprise results. Number four seed Czech IM, Tomas Oral (22) lost in the second round to 17 year old Swiss player Rico Zenklusen.
