1) Introduction

My thanks to Rubén Casafús and Adrián Roldán, Eric Schiller, Herman Van Riemsdijk, Thomas Leckner, Luis Santos, Michael Atkins, Laszlo Nagy, Ram Soffer, Jerry Bibuld, Christophe Bouton of Europe Echecs, Lost Boys, FICS, David Flynn and Stephane Laborde, John Saunders and all those who helped with this issue.

A bit of a holding week with plenty of chess but nothing really to stir the blood. However in the next few weeks over the Christmas and New Year period we should see some good chess at Wijk aan Zee and Groningen, at Hastings and elsewhere.

Hope you enjoy this issue

Mark

2) Autumn International, Tel Aviv, December 1998

Ram Soffer reports on a category 3 tournament held in the Sol & Sissy Mark Center in Tel Aviv, home of the Kasparov Chess Academy, between 8-12 December 1998. The tournament organiser and director was Yochanan Afek. 17-year-old Evgeny Postny from Haifa, Israel scored his 1st IM norm.

3) 2nd OIBM in Bad Wiessee

The 2nd OIBM in Bad Wiessee was won for a second time by Russian Grandmaster Alexander Khalifman. He scored 8/9 which included one loss to Eric Lobron who was in a tie for second place with Igor Glek.

Players from 18 different countries played. There were 20 GMs, 16 IMs and 14 FIDE masters. Six GMs with an ELO over 2600. Going into the last round Eric Lobron, Alexander Khalifman and Christian Gabriel all had 7 points. There were nine players a further half point behind. Alexander Khalifman from St. Petersburg exploited a small inaccuracy by his opponent Christian Gabriel to take first prize. Khalifman won eight of his nine games. Eric Lobron played against Zurab Sturua but could do nothing against solid play. So despite stronger opposition than in the previous year Alexander Khalifman took first. Igor Glek joined Lobron after a win against Christoph Renner. Dimitij Bunzmann won the junior prize U20. For Bunzmann this performance also meant he scored a GM norm. The sponsors Bank Hofmann may sponsor a 3rd event but there was no announcement at the closing ceremony. News came from Thomas Leckner.

Leitão and Vescovi play the Brazilian Finals [by Herman van Riemsdijk Arbiter of the 65th Brazilian Championship]

Grandmasters Rafael Leitão and Giovanni Vescovi will play a match of four games deciding the Brazilian 1998 title. Giovanni Vescovi got in the finals by beating Adriano Caldeira (2190) 2 x 0 in the semifinals. Leitão had more work after eliminating today IM Everaldo Matsuura in the tie-break of the other semifinal after two draws in the regular games. The time rate is 2 hours for the whole game with a bonus of 30 seconds after each move. In the tie-break each player had 20 minutes + 10 seconds. The four games will start tomorrow in Itabirito, a small town in Minas Gerais State and will last until Friday. If necessary, the tie-break will be Saturday, the same day in which the elections for the new President of the Brazilian Chess Federation will be held. There are two candidates. One is the current president, Estevão Bakô, who is supported by Milos, Leitão and the great majority of the Brazilian Ims (Including myself). The other is IM Darcy Lima who has the support of GM Sunye. Both are dissidents of the Brazilian Chess Federation board of directors. But players have no direct votes ... So the result is still open and will be the closest elections for a long time.

11) France-Iceland

On 5th december there was a friendly match France - Iceland on FICS organised by the French TV Channel "FRANCE2" as one of the events of the "telethon" for handicaped people. This was the idea of Claude Londex a handicapped player, President of the Cadillac Chess Club near Bordeaux, and the AFM regional organiser Jose Fernandez of the "Association Francaise de lutte contre les Myopathies". The President of Federation Francaise des Echecs was present. The teams were for Iceland GMs Hjartarson, Olafsson and Stefansson + 3 handicapped players against France GMs Marciano, Relange IM Fressinet + 3 handicapped players. Iceland won 4-2. Iceland had white on boards 1, 3 and 5. Each player had 35 minutes for the whole game. The Icelandic players had an extra 5 seconds per move, and the French players had an extra 10 seconds per move, since they needed to transfer the moves from the computer to the board. My thanks to FICS, David Flynn and Stephane Laborde for news of the event.
