1) Introduction

My thanks to Anjo Anjewierden, Patrick Rasenberg, Lost Boys, Europe Echecs, Rubén Casafús, Adrián Roldán. John Fernandez, John Saunders, Lebanese Chess Federation, Net64 and all those who helped with this issue.

Judit Polgar made light work of the VAM tournament and its really a shame she isn't playing in the rather tougher Fontys tournament which has now started. That event, likely to be the last really high category tournament of the year, got off to an interesting start with Anand scoring 2/2 including a victory over Vladimir Kramnik. After four rounds Anand leads with 3/4 but there is a long way to go. Should be great.

Hope you enjoy this issue

Mark

2) Tilburg, Fontys Tournament

The Tilburg Fontys tournament runs 23rd October - 4th November, Anand, Kramnik, Adams, Svidler, Topalov, Leko, Sadler, Zvjaginsev, Van Wely, Korchnoi, Lautier, Piket. There is daily coverage on the twic pages. After four rounds Anand leads with 3/4. He took advantage of two whites to beat Joel Lautier and Vladimir Kramnik. His victory over Kramnik was a strange one where Kramnik sacrificed a piece for what appeared to be always insufficient compensation when he had no need to. Anand drew with Piket and Topalov in rounds three and four. Close behind are Van Wely, Topalov and Matthew Sadler (who beat fellow countryman Michael Adams in round 4). The event should really warm up after the first rest day on Tuesday.

3) VAM Tournament, Hoogeveen

Judit Polgar easily won the four player double round robin VAM tournament in Hoogeveen, the Netherlands. She beat all the other players at least once and in the case of Tal Shaked twice. Jan Timman finished second, Boris Spassky third and Tal Shaked last. Polgar was extremely impressive winning her first three games before cruising to first place with two draws in the second half of the tournament for a 2836 performance. On this form it is really a shame she wasn't invited to the rather stronger Tilburg tournament which started this week instead. In the nine round open there was a four way tie for first between,Dimitri Reinderman, Victor Mikhalevski, Karel Van der Weide, and Einar Gausel.

My thanks to Anjo Anjewierden (one of the greatest influences on TWIC) and Patrick Rasenberg for news of the event. Internet coverage at:

6) Manhattan Chess Club October International

John Fernandez reports on the Manhattan Chess Club Category VIII international tournament 8-16 October 1998. Georgian Grandmaster Georgi Kacheishvili, who has been on quite a hot streak since arriving to the United States this summer, won the tournament, a full point ahead of the field. American IM Josh Waitzkin had a very solid tournament, one point behind Kacheishvili, in sole possession of second place. FM Johnathan Ady secured his IM norm in difficult fashion. At four points after the 8th round, he found himself having to defeat Kacheishvili in the final round to secure the IM norm. Ady played a very interesting attacking game, and managed to emerge victorious, and able to claim himself the norm. Fortunately, Kacheishvili was so far ahead of the field, his winning the tournament was already assured after round 8. Also tied with FM Ady at five points were IM Ron Burnett and GM Sam Palatnik. IM Jay Bonin and IM Maurice Ashley made up the group at 4.5, and behind them were newly crowned GM Alexander Stripunsky, IM Saudin Robovic, and Nenad Vulicevic. The event was ably directed by Nicholas Conticello. The Manhattan Chess Club is planning to have a few more norm events in the future. You can find out information about the club at its webpage:
