1) Introduction

My thanks to El Pais, Net64, Kevin O'Connell, Forum 64, Europe-Echecs, John Saunders, Przemek Jahr, Jakub Fuksik of Agentura 64,Laslo Nagy, Adrian Roldan (AJEDREZ ARGENTINO MultiWeb ) and all those who helped with this issue.

Gelfand lead the Category 17 tournament in Poland with a fine run in rounds 6-8. Interesting too is the form of Shirov (who plays Kasparov later in the year) and Karpov (who is now playing very little serious chess). Elsewhere the forfeit of Galliamova still continues to puzzle, with no official line from FIDE.

Hope you enjoy this issue

Mark

2) Category 17 in Polanica Zdroj

The Category 17 Polanica Zdroj tournament is underway in Poland running 17th-26th August. Boris Gelfand is the impressive leader after seven of the nine rounds of the Akiba Rubinstein Memorial in Polanica Zdroj. He had straight wins against Shirov, Rublevsky and Macieja in rounds 4-6 to overhaul early lead Vassily Ivanchuk. Ivanchuk is in second place (although Leko potentially can catch him if he beats Karpov). Kasparov's challenger, Shirov after wins in rounds six and seven has given himself a chance of a reasonable result. FIDE Champion Anatoly Karpov has disappointed so far with an early loss to Krasenkow only compensated by a win against back-marker Macieja.

3) Villarrobledo rapidplay tournament

The Villarrobledo rapidplay tournament, (9 rounds, g/25) took place August 22nd-23rd. Kramnik, Anand, Salov, Ljubojevic, Van Wely, Chernin made up the field of 175 players, including 21 GMs. The event was comfortably won by Viswanathan Anand who could afford to take a short draw in the final round. The key moment was his win against Kramnik in round seven, although Anand seemed to be almost effortlessly efficient throughout the event.

4) Galliamova defaults against Xie Jun

The women's World Chess Championships have been thrown into chaos by the no-show of Alisa Galliamova of Russia for her match with ex-champion Xie Jun of China in Shenyang last weekend for the Candidates final match. The match went ahead with press and TV there although it was known to FIDE that Galliamova would not turn up. She is reported to be both in dispute with her own Federation and unhappy that the match was not split between her home town of Kazan and China. Kazan could not raise the required funds for the match. Quite what the sponsors of the $US120,000 match think is not known but the Chinese Chess Federation are already asking for compensation from FIDE. It is also clear that this makes it much harder to find a sponsor for the final match between Zsuzsa Polgar and Xie Jun. It will be interesting to hear in more detail why Galliamova decided to default, especially as even under the circumstances she would have been favourite for the match.

5) Harplinge GM tournament

The Harplinge GM tournament took place in Sweden on August 15th-23rd as part of the Harplinge Chess and Music Festival. The event took place at the Old Mill Inn, Harplinge Vardshus. The event was won jointly by Curt Hansen and Joel Lautier with 6.5/9. In 3rd place was Emil Sutovsky who played the game of the tournament in defeating Julian Hodgson in round 3.

There was also an open event 20-23rd August which saw a two way tie between IM Samir Lejlic and Erik Hedman on five points and an equal tie break.

6) Spanish Chess Championships

The Spanish Chess Championship ran 12-20 August 1998 in Linares Spain, and most of the top Spanish players are competed in this 9 round Swiss event. Spanish number one Miguel Illescas became champion for the second time by virtue of a superior tie-break from Francisco Vallejo Pons. Both players were undefeated. However it was Vallejo Pons who deservedly made the headlines. He had his 16th birthday during the event and is clearly a big hope for Spanish chess.

8) 3rd Hampstead International

The 3rd Hampstead International ran 10-23rd August and was organised by Adam Raoof.

There was a Category 7 event with a GM norm set at 11.5 points and an IM norm at 8.5. This was won by GM Jim Plaskett although even he didn't actually reach the GM norm target. In second place were Krishnan Sashikiran (whom I assume now has the IM title although it isn't in the copy of the rating list I have) and Boris Kreiman both were a point short of their GM targets, although in the case of the young Indian player Sashikiran it clearly going to be a matter of time.

The IM event saw two norms scored. Karl Mah scored an IM norm over nine rounds (the results being calculated the same way as those achieved in an open) but two draws in the final round left him short of the target of 8.5 points over 11 rounds. The winner of the event was Simon Knott and he also achieved the full IM norm.

My thanks to John Saunders for the internet coverage and the games.

15) WDR Chess Match. Kramnik beats Adams

As reported last week Vladimir Kramnik beat Michael Adams in their live chess game on 16th August. There were a few more moves than were initially reported. They appear in the games section now.

16) Lippstadt Tournament

The GM tournament in Lippstadt took place 29.7.-9.8. 1998 in the Hotel "Residenz , Lippstadt. There was daily coverage on the internet at: http://www.dpl.net/user/DPL-00239/Gm98.htm

As reported last week 14-year old IM Luke McShane won the Category X Hans & Lenze grandmaster tournament in Lippstadt, Germany, achieving his first grandmaster norm in the process. I should have given the official table (although this scoring method is not recognised by FIDE as far as I know) where the players were given 3 points for a win and 1 for a draw.
