My thanks Bob Wade, Mart Tarmak, TASC, Luis Santos, Tomas Micanek, Harald Grafenhofer, Gary Bekker, Ian Murray, Lanfranco Bombelli, Zoltan Blazsik, Tryfon Costas Gavriel and and all those who helped with this issue.
Its late and I'm in time trouble. Plenty of games and news this week. Dortmund and the Keres Memorial on the playing front. The July FIDE rating list sees Anand move to number 2 in the World and close the gap on Kasparov who is still number one. Just behind is Vladimir Kramnik and then a noticable gap to the rest starting with Ivanchuk and Karpov who have both lost rating points but move up due to Topalov's loss of points.
Hope you enjoy this issue

After four rounds of the Dortmund Sparkassen Chess Meeting '98 Peter Leko leads with 3/4 from Adams, Kramnik and Ivanchuk. New World number two Viswanathan Anand is on 50% after four draws and Alexey Shirov's recent run of excellent form hasn't shown itself so far, he is on 1/4 after losing to both Ivanchuk and Leko. Full daily coverage on TWIC's pages with updates directly after the rounds finish. There is additional coverage at:

The FIDE Rating list for July was published today. Or rather the top 100 plus leading players in various categories. Kasparov drops 10 points to 2815 whereas Anand gained 25 points to move into second above Vladimir Kramnik. Topalov's fell to 10th in the World after losing 40 rating points. Ivanchuk is now World number 4 in spite of losing rating points. A similar effect applies to Karpov too. Shirov's good half year was perhaps not that good, he only netted 10 rating points in the period. Michael Adams becomes the first British player over 2700 and is now clearly England's number one. Peter Svidler enters the 2700 club also for the first time. The old January rating is given next to the new July rating.
The full rating list will probably be available in some weeks time further information and eventually a searchable list at the Chess Planet site

Suncoast Noosa Open 13-14 June 1998 Arbiters: Michael Byrne & Gary Bekker Tournament Report by Gary Bekker.
This year's Noosa Open attracted a near-record entry of 80 players, including eight FIDE Titled players. The tournament continued its international tradition, with the participation of three overseas players - FM Bob Smith of New Zealand who played last year, and FM Bretislav Modr and his wife WFM Hana Modrova from the Czech Republic. The tournament also provided a rare opportunity for the two chief arbiters of the 1999 Australian Open to work together before the end of the year.
Once again, thanks to the use of DGT clocks and a 10 second/move finish, all games were decided at the board without guillotine finishes or Rapidplay draw claim rules.
Hana Modrova got off to a bad start in the tournament with two consecutive losses in rounds one and two, and Bob Smith was disappointed to lose in round two to Derrick Jeffries who described his win against the FM as the best in his chess career.
Stephen Solomon has a reputation for extracting the utmost from every ending but in round four, Craig Laird defeated Stephen Solomon after leading him into a lost endgame. After the first day of play, only Rogers, Wohl, Laird, and Myers were on perfect scores. The following morning, Rogers and Wohl defeated Laird and Myers respectively. Meanwhile Modr held Solomon to a draw which led Rogers to quip "Solomon must be losing his touch - not only was he unable to draw his lost ending but now he's not even winning drawn ones!"
In the penultimate round Rogers defeated Wohl to take the outright lead. A point behind him were Wohl, Laird, and Allen, all of whom he had already beaten, Modr who had drawn with Smerdon and Solomon, and also Smith who was making amends for his earlier loss to Jeffries.
In the last round, Rogers drew with Modr to secure first place. Wohl and Laird defeated Allen and Smith respectively to come equal second, while Solomon and Smerdon won their games to come equal third with Modr. Modrova made up for her poor start with five straight wins to finish up the highest scoring female.
Winners of the ratings divisions were Richard Clarke, Tony Weller, Cameron Bailey, Dominic Patissier, Anthony Lam, Wendy Terry and Ben Goodwin. David "Smurf" Smerdon won the junior prize and Nigel Short look-alike, Chris Page, collected the cadet prize.
Thanks must go to Australian Chess Enterprises for supplying DGT clocks, the organising committee of the Suncoast Chess Club, and my co-arbiter Michael Byrne. My special thanks to Paul Summers for his help with the computers and the Powell family for their hospitality. > Final leading scores: 6.5 Rogers 6.0 Wohl, Laird 5.5 Solomon, Modr, Smerdon 5.0 Allen, Smith, Modrova, Dizdarevic, Clarke, Weller, Mehltreter

Ian Murray reports: After tying for first in the 1998 Australian Championship in Melbourne (January), GM Ian Rogers (New South Wales) and IM Stephen Solomon (Queensland) contested a $3300 four-game match at Southport on the Gold Coast in Queensland on June 23-26 to decide the titleholder.
Solomon's recent form slump continued to dog him, and Rogers took the match comfortably 3.5 - 0.5. He won the first three to take the title, but both players agreed to play the fourth game for the benefit of the crowd at the Southport Park Shopping Plaza.

Eric Schiller sends an update of the 1998 Hawai'i International Chess Festival July 20 through August 10, 1998 Sponsored by Cardoza Publishing, Saitek, Mindscape, Kona Systems and Chessworks Unlimited
The 1998 Hawai'i International Chess Festival incorporates both the Cardoza United States Open and the Saitek United States Masters chess tournaments. The "Chess Vacation of a Lifetime" offers affordable chess experiences in paradise, lasting from 3 days to 3 weeks. Unlike most tournaments, which are designed to make profits for the organizer from entry fees, the Hawai'i International Chess Festival relies on advertising and sponsorship to keep your costs down, so instead of outrageous entry fees, you can spend your money enjoying all the splendors of the Islands. We have arranged daily activities, from hiking to snorkeling to just relaxing on beautiful secluded beaches. We've arranged discounts on everything from hotels, meals and entry fees to snorkeling and diving adventures. Visit the mighty Kilauea Volcano, snorkel off the Kona Coast, see Pearl Harbor all in affordable group trips. Many of our activities cost just $1! For those interested in chess politics, the USCF annual meetings are held during the US Open and you can express your views to the decision-makers. FIDE Executive Director Emanual Omuku is expected to attend, and there will be a public forum on the issues surrounding the World Championship. Travel bargains are now available. Some GM and IM conditions are still available.
