1) Introduction

My thanks to the press room at Carzola, Sibylle Heyme (Schach Magazine), Laszlo Nagy, Bob Wade, Luis Santos, Rolf Sander, Zoltan Blazsik, Susan Strahan, Net64, El Pais, Christophe Bouton of Europe Echecs, Luis Santos and and all those who helped with this issue.

Shirov's fine win against Kramnik in the final game of their match sets up a fascinating match against Kasparov in October. 67 year old Viktor Korchnoi's fantastic win in Sarajevo cannot go unremarked either. A great achievement.

Hope you enjoy this issue

Mark

2) Shirov qualifies to play Kasparov

Alexei Shirov beat Vladimir Kramnik in their World Chess Council (WCC) Candidates match in Cazorla (Jaén), Spain. The match, which took place May 24th - June 5th, qualifies Shirov to play Garry Kasparov starting on October 16th in Seville for a prize fund of $1.9m ($1.235m to the winner, $0.665m to the loser). Vladimir Kramnik picked up $0.2m as the loser of the match.

Alexei Shirov, who is 26 on July 4th, has brought increasing maturity to his game in the last year. He has managed to put behind him the upheaval that leaving his native Latvia and getting married brought to his life. He now lives in Spain. Always a fantastic talent, he has maintained a high rating for many years without appearing to make the absolute best of his abilities. This has now changed and his chances against Kasparov are not easy to evaluate because of the speed of change in his game. He has three months to prepare for Kasparov and he appears to have the will to do this exceptionally well.

Vladimir Kramnik is 23 years old on June 25th and has been until this year a stable World number 2 (briefly number 1) for a while. Although playing very well he's probably not quite at the very top of his game at the moment. He did play the match to a high level though. His style is undergoing some changes at the moment, and criticisms of his safety first attitude seem to me entirely misplaced. The loser's strategy is always criticised, as it would have been if he had been demolished playing a series of Sicilians. He will play in the style he is comfortable with and one which has the potential to take him to the World Championships once he develops it further. Not everyone need play the very sharpest tactics (which he can cope with too) and his style seems to be moving towards that of Botvinnik. He has been very unfortunate that his very top form did not coincide with a World Championships Cycle. The last FIDE and PCA cycles came too early and this match came during this evolution in his game. Indeed, its hard to say if he really was below form as Shirov's play and preparation was so controlled during the match. At 23 he is already one of the greatest players ever and he should only get better. The match was dominated by the specific preparation of both players with black. Shirov plays 1.e4 and Kramnik prepared the Petroff Defence as a surprise weapon against this. He normally specialises in the Sveshnikov and Richter-Rauser varations of the Sicilian. Kramnik plays 1.d4 (also 1.Nf3 with the idea of move order shifts into main-line d-pawn openings) and Shirov prepared the Grunfeld specially for this match.

The key points of the match were Kramnik's loss in game four and his failure to capitalise on a fine position in game five. After this Kramnik's inability to gain significant pressure with the white pieces allowed Shirov to control the match and indeed have the luxury of not needing to push for wins against Kramnik's Petroff Defence. Game four saw Kramnik reach a position which has been drawn a few times by Artur Jussupow, he innovated with 13... Ng5 and according to Jon Speelman missed the chance to get a drawish position with 13. ...Re3. Although he defended well the pressure told and he evenually succombed to the pressure that long term defence brings with it.

In game five his 18. Bh4 was a fine novelty which caused Shirov all sorts of problems, it was the only time in the match he mananged this with white. Somewhere he ought to have been winning but Shirov's creative defence held out and the chance was gone. It was almost certainly the moment the match went away from Kramnik.

The nineth game was Kramnik's final one with white and he probably viewed it as his last chance to level the match. In a sharp position he went astray on moves 19 and 20. After the game 19. Nf2 or 19. d7 were suggested. 20. d7 was also a possibility with unclear play. Shirov's ability to keep his nerve and understand the position well and get over the winning line was very impressive.

I felt that such well prepared opponents should have played a longer match where the players would have had more opportunities to feel out the weaknesses in each other's preparation. I certainly had no problem with the short draws, this is the nature of the struggle. They produced three excellent games and were playing absolutely to win the match. This is what sport is about, the best playing each other with only one attitude of mind, to win at all costs. At its best this produces the greatest chess and I hope that the Shirov - Kasparov match will be a great one.

3) Viktor Korchnoi scores a fine victory in Sarajevo

A vintage performance from Viktor Korchnoi saw him win this Category 15 event in Sarajevo, Bosnia. The event ran May 29th - June 6th. Korchnoi playing in his classic style of accumulating material and then converting it scored 7/9 and this score included one loss. He just outpaced Ivan Sokolov who finished on 6.5 points. Undefeated on 5.5 was Evgeny Bareev who shared third with Kiril Georgiev the only player to defeat the tournament winner.

8) Hamburg City Championships

Rolf Sander reports on the start of the Hamburg City Championships which finished on June 6th. The Hamburg City Championships was held as a 28 player, nine round swiss, 'closed' tournament. 20 local players (among them IM Mueller, IM Heinemann and IM Wilhelmi) competed with eight invited players (GM Nisipeanu, GM Ftacnik, GM Slobodjan, GM Kempinski, GM Lukacs, IM Pelletier, GM Movsziszian, GM Rogozenko). Karsten Mueller scored his final GM-Norm and should become a Grandmaster. He finished in second place scoring 6/9. Lubomir Ftacnik won the Hamburg Championships as the only player who scored 6.5 points. GM Rogozenko beat IM Heinemann to finish 3rd. FM Reddmann lost a chance of an IM-Norm, because his opponent in the last round did not show up in time. All the games are given again as Trisic-Mowsziszian was given with the players the wrong way round.
