2) WCC Candidates Final, Kramnik vs Shirov

Cazorla (Jaen), Spain is the venue for the ten game match between Alexei Shirov and Vladimir Kramnik. Under the auspices of the World Chess Council (WCC) an organisation whose current purpose is to provide a strong challenger to Garry Kasparov in October. The loser of the match will receive $200,000 (31 million pesatas) and the winner will play Kasparov for a share of $1.9m (295 million pesatas). They will play groups of two games then a rest day throughout the match. If the match is drawn there will be rapidplay games on June 8th to decide the result.

After a slow start the match has now become a full battle. This is matchplay of the highest quality. The early games have been about understanding what openings each other have prepared. As the match enters its second half we will see what changes they make. In a way it is a shame that there are only 10 games in the match as this kind of play often takes quite a few games to play itself out fully.

Game three saw the players discuss the variation of the Grunfeld played by Karpov and Kasparov in Seville 1987. 19. h3 was the new but not very startling novelty. Only a few moves later Kramnik thought for 47 minutes, presumably about his pre-game analysis before steering the game to a draw. During the game it became apparent also that Kramnik is suffering from some intestinal problem which necessitates him leaving the stage every now and again.

Game four produced the first, and so far only, decisive game. The players again contested a Petroff Defence. This time Shirov got a small but lasting advantage out of the opening. Gradually Shirov turned the advantage to a win in 63 moves to take the lead.

Game five should have seen Kramnik equalise in probably the most interesting game of the match so far. Following game three for 17 moves Kramnik played 18. Bh4. Shirov reacted to this move nervously, this was probably the first real surprise of the match. Kramnik probably had a winning position after move 40 but Shirov's endgame play should not be underestimated and here he found an interesting drawing idea.

Game six was a short draw in 18 moves. Shirov avoided the Petroff this time to convert the game to a Four Knights. A very sharp variation followed which although it doesn't seem to have been played before both seemed to know and understand according to El Pais.

4) Toronto International Open 1998 by Vojin Vujosevic

TIO 1998 was an even bigger success than the last year's edition. This time 340 players entered the tournament but only 339 played. Number 340, a strong player and a prominent Ontario lawyer, sent me an E-mail at the last moment saying he could not play after all, but the organizers could keep the money as a contribution. We used the $100 Canadian, to buy 10 TIO 98 T-shirts which were presented to the nine participating GM's plus last year's winner IM (Haroon Al-) Rashid Ziatdinov. The event took place May 14th-18th 1998.

The tournament was the largest open in Canada in more than a decade. The $26,000 in prizes, guaranteed by the Greater Toronto Chess Building Fund, was paid out as advertized. The nine GM's were: Joel Benjamin, Dmitry Gurevich, Sergey Kudrin, Alex Shabalov, Leonid Shamkovich all of U.S., Nigel Davies of U.K., Gildardo Garcia of Colombia, Igor Novikov of Ukraine, and Eduardas Rozentalis of Lithuania. There was one GM-elect, Alexander Stripunsky, plus 8 more I.M.'s including last year's winner Rashid Ziatdinov of Uzbekistan and Florida. Grandmaster Larry Christiansen of U.S. made it as far as Albany, New York. His luggage was stolen at the railway station at what point he phoned to tell us he was going back to Boston. There were players from across Canada & U.S. as well as from Colombia, England, Israel, Philippines, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Wales, and Yugoslavia. The ex-soviet Georgian delegation came two rounds before the end of the tournament due to the visa mix-up at the Canadian Embassy in Ankara, Turkey. The American contingent was rather strong, some came as far away as California. These included a mother who brought with her, the Karnazes brothers, her young twins. One of them, Zachary took $250 in the under 1300.

A few days before the tournament the organizers got rather paranoid about getting some suspicious calls and E-mails from the "visiting grandmasters". When we started checking into it I received a phone call from GM Larry Christiansen who offered to prove his identity by playing me a blindfold game which I shrewdly declined. While we were discussing the possibility some of the guests may be fakes I got a phone call from a visiting Hungarian IM who said his name was BOGUSzlavskij. Eat your heart out Michael Greengard and try this one on for size! Kidding aside MIG is the best thing that happened to TWIC lately. Anyway, Mr. B. turned out to be real although he did not enter the tournament.

In Toronto chess organizers and TD's are on the endangered species list. Our small team scrambled to meet all challenges. The team consisted of Chief TD Alex Knox, the two top sections TD Ignac Vucko, the invaluable organizer and TD Shivaharan Thurairasah, and the author of these strokes, Vojin Vujosevic, playing the role of the Chief Organizer and the General Bottle Washer. Further help was furnished by the TIO 98 webmaster Ranko Zugic, Smilja Vujosevic, Ari Mendrinos, Wilf Ferner, Ian McGarrett, Steve Guidy, and Noel Daez.

An amusing episode happened toward the end of the tournament. A TV crew came and took some footage and then approached me to find for them a particular player they were interested in. I wanted to know which GM they wanted? Turned out they wanted to meet a totally unknown 11 year old boy with a rating of 1100!! Go figure!

At our tournaments we have a real Babylon 5 atmosphere with a cacophony of languages punctuated by bursts of English with all kinds of accents. More and more medium strength players are settling here. Among them the most prominent are players from the former Soviet Union and former Yugoslavia.

We got a lot of compliments for this tournament including those from the biggies. They all want to come back. Alexander Stripunsky summed it up in his E-mail after the tournament: "Thank you for the invitation. Toronto is a beautiful city!! I hope to meet you next year!"

The organizers would like to thank all the participants and wish to see them back next year at an even bigger and better TIO 99. And of course in year 2000! Come and celebrate the MILLENIUM in TORONTONIUM! Some weaknesses were displayed and steps will be taken to improve in all areas. Our thanks go to the Downtown Toronto Best Western Primrose Hotel and the catering manager Michel Meijer for their continued hospitality. We also thank Mark Crowther for being a nice guy and promptly establishing a link to the TIO 98 site from TWIC minutes after being asked. And last but not least we thank the Greater Toronto Chess Building Fund for guarantying the largest open prize fund in Canada to date.

6) Israel at 50 Jubilee Chess events

The Israel at 50 Jubilee Chess Festival had a number of events that followed the Kasparov vs Israeli team that was reported last week. Material from Shay Bushinsky who was the organiser of the event. All the main events were live on ICC.

The last event as part of Israel's jubilee celebrations was the match between Tel-Aviv and Moscow. Both teams had last minute changes. Vassili Smyslov went to hospital for an urgent eye operation. Mrs Bystritkaya also couldn't play so the Moscow team had to recruit IM Evgeny Naer and Miss Shustayeva. The Tel-Aviv team had to replace football player Rony Rosenthal with 9 year old Katya Lasko, winner of the U-9 children Jubilee chess championships. The match was a close run thing with a very slight advantage for the Tel-Aviv side.

Format: Two games. The time control 25 minutes + 5 second increment.

Active Chess:

There was an active chess championship in the Kasparov chess academy and there was a 108 player field including 17 grandmasters: Alterman, Smirin, Goldin, Rechlis, Huzman, Avruch, Kasnstler, Golod, Yudasin, Gofshtein, Liss, Michalevsky, Grunfeld, Murey, Bikhovsky, Tseitlin, Finkel and many IMs. It was a seven round tournament with 25 minutes per player per game. The first four places (all scoring 6 points out of 7) were: GM Ilya Smirin, GM Vitali Golod Junior(C) by Amir Ban & Shay Bushinsky.and GM Eran Liss. Amongst Junior's "victims" were: GMs Alex Goldin and GM Boris Alterman IM Maxim Uritsky, IM Stisis Yaacov in round 1 Junior won against a 1700 player. Junior drew with GM Boris Kanstler and GM Ilya Smirin

Kasparov played Peter Svidler in two games of 6 minute chess (no increment) on May 26th on the internet chess club. There were a few technical problems just prior to play. Kasparov was under the impression that Svidler was in front of an audience as he was but in fact he was at home. Almost at the same time the internet in St Petersburg went down for 15 minutes. These problems were sorted out and two games were played. Game one saw Svidler put up tough resistance with the black and cause Kasparov a few "headaches" on the queen's side. After 9 minutes of play, Kasparov managed to trick Svidler who missed the purpose of Kh1 to allow a decisive bishop sacrifice. Game 2 Svidler blundered with an early Na5 which was immediately exploited by Kasparov both on board and on clock.

Interestingly this was not the first time the two had played over ICC. They had "accidently" played each other whilst preparing for this exhibition. Kasparov in particular needed to learn about "mouse slip", lag, and even how to claim a draw by three fold repetition. "Dahlia" was an anonymous GM account used for Kasparov's purposes which got him challenges from good players on-line. After losing and drawing to Verdugo he found another opponent PBS. After a good opening he found his opponent put up strong resistance. Kasparov won this game but lost the next one. [Shay Bushinsky reports what happened next] "This guy is quick - he must be one of the top 10: It can't be Shirov or Kramnik, they are both busy playing each other for the right to play me" he said. "Wow PBS - couldn't it be Peter Borisovich Svidler" I guessed. "Of course!", replied Garry, "it must be" recalling these initials from a previous experience he had with Svidler. So on Sunday, May 24th, a training match between two anonymous players: Peter Svidler aka PBS and Garry Kasparov aka Dahlia took place with Dahlia winning 3-1. During their phone conversation later it turned out that Svidler recognized who Dahlia is very quickly - the playing strength was evident.

A few games are in the games section. They are of course very much practice games and were all at the timerate of 5 minutes for all moves. There are a few other games by Kasparov including ones against Psakhis and Miles (where he didn't know how to claim a 3 fold repetition).

The events appeared live on ICC, check the details of the events at: http://www.chessclub.com/event/jubilee/players.html

8) Villa Martelli

Giovanni Vescovi scored a GM norm and Enrique Scarella an IM norm at the Villa Martelli tournament which took place May 19th-28th. Vescovi was joint first with Gilberto Milos. Milos had the result of his first round game with Andres Rodriguez was declared a draw on appeal. A strange game where Milos played 28. Bf6 instead of the immediately killing 28. Qf6, perhaps this was what the dispute was about as a few moves later he had a lost position. Internet coverage at http://members.tripod.com/~scalise/ on Luis Scalise' www page.

11) 4NCL

The 4 Nations Chess League, the UK's chess league finished over the bank holiday weekend May 23rd - 25th. The title was won by reigning champions Midland Monarchs. This was also their third victory in four years. Invicta Knights took the remaining European place from Slough on tie-break. There was an extremely tense relegation battle also with Guildford, Northumbria and the SW Dragons going down. Guildford were just edged out being beaten heavily 6.5-1.5 by British Chess Magazine while Bristol won 4.5-3.5 against SW Dragons. Level on match and game points Bristol stayed up by virtue of beating Guildford earlier in the season. My thanks to John Saunders and Nigel Johnson for the news.

12) International Chess Tournament in Neubrandenburg (GER)

Roland Wimmer reports:

The town of Neubrandenburg celebrated its 750th anniversary from 2-10 May 1998 with invited delegations from 7 European twin towns: Collegno (ITA), Flensburg (GER), Gladsaxe (DEN), Koszalin (POL), Petrosawodsk (RUS), Nevers (FRA) and Villejuif (FRA). The picturesque town, sometimes called the "Town of Four Gates", was founded in 1248 and is one of the oldest towns in Mecklenburg.

The week saw concerts, arts exhibitions, workshops, gastronomic delights and, last but not least, an international chess tournament which ran from Thursday to Sunday 5-10 May (a 7-round Swiss event with a time-limit of 30 moves/90 minutes plus 1 hour per player for the rest of the game). There were 2 games per day except Thursday. The venue of the tournament was the Radisson SAS Hotel (2 conference rooms) which offered excellent playing conditions to the 64 participants: 3 GM's, 4 IM's (in total 18 players with a FIDE rating).

4 players scored 5.5/7 and it was finally IM Felix Levin (Schwerin) (already 3 GM norms) who won the tournament thanks to his Buchholz score. The 3 invited German GM's Lothar Vogt, Thomas Luther and Peter Enders were placed 2nd, 3rd and 4th respectively. Michail Jatschmenew from Petrosawodsk (RUS) was the highest ranked "twin-town" player. There were also lots of category prizes.

At the closing ceremony GM Lothar Vogt and the speakers of the partner towns expressed their appreciation for a well-organized tournament, which was harmoniously guided by the arbiter team of Holger Borchers, Arno Bethke and Joerg Zimmermann. Data entry and verification was done by Martin Hellwig and Roland Wimmer. In case of any inaccuracies or for further information don't hesitate to contact me at rwimmer@dial.oleane.com. 13) Memorial Day Classic by Jack Peters

The Memorial Day Classic, one of the largest annual tournaments in Los Angeles, attracted only 197 players this year. That is by far the worst turnout in its 19-year history. Competition from other major tournaments and a general slump in tournament attendance seem like the reasons for the poor turnout.

The Open section, with 24 masters among the 26 entrants, featured only 2 GMs and 4 IMs. That is also far beneath its usual standard. The Memorial Day Classic, like many American events, offers players a choice of schedules. Most (18) chose the three-day schedule, with six 40/2 games on May 23-25, but 8 preferred the two-day schedule, with three G/60 games early on May 24 befor joining the rest of the players in Round 4. In either schedule, there were significant upsets in the first round. Eduard Gufeld lost a sensational game to 13-year old master Patrick Hummel, while Walter Browne lost (time pressure, of course!) to Thomas Wolski. Gufeld then reeled off four straight wins, but Browne suffered another loss, in Round 4 to James Maki, and withdrew with a score of 2-2.

Cyrus Lakdawala, Michael Brooks, and Gufeld shared first place with scores of 4.5-1.5. Each won $1,100. Lakdawala drew his two rivals in short games on the last day.

Next at 4-2 were James Maki, Charles Van Buskirk, IM Jack Peters, and IM Guillermo Rey. Each won $225. Thomas Wolski and Harutyun Akopyan finished with 3.5-2.5, out of the money.

Organizer Jay Blem, owner of National Chess and Games, guaranteed $18,000 in prizemoney and suffered a loss of over $5,000. It's uncertain who will run the traditional tournament next year.
