3) President's Cup Elista

The Russian Chess Championships were due to be in Elista but due to a disagreement with the Russian Chess Federation they have been moved to St Petersberg in July. However Kirsan Iljumzhinov still decided to hold an event with $100,000 of prize money. It is a knockout event. The event started late due to a serious car accident involving Maia Chiburdanidze, Kiril Georgiev and Zurab Azmaiparashvili. If they had not been so close to a hospital Chiburdanidze could have been in serious danger. As it was her condition was stabilised and she is not in any danger. Kiril Georgiev was even well enough to take part in the event. The first round saw few if any surprises.
