1) Introduction

My thanks to Shahcom, Laszlo Nagy, Philipp Schlosser, Zoltan Blazsik, Adam Raoof, John Henderson, Milan Dezelin, and all those who helped with this issue.

Garry Kasparov turned 35 today, a little worrying for those of us who remembered him before he became famous. In the old days 35 was the height of a players career, its unclear whether this is the case with Kasparov. Certainly his career has spanned some of the greatest changes in the game. In 1990 when he played Karpov there were adjournments at move 40 this form of chess, once standard is now dead, simply not played anymore. Again this week there are few top class events, indeed the only recognisable top player competing this week seems to be Khalifman. Whilst chess is chess and high level games are sometimes hard to understand, I like to see chess at its best and its becoming less frequent. I hope this decline (and it is a decline) in the number of top chess events can be reversed, the reasons for which are unclear.

Hope you enjoy this issue

Mark

5) 6th. Haering Drei-Fluesse-Open Passau 1998

Philipp Schlosser sends a short report on the 6th. Haering Drei-Fluesse-Open Passau 1998 which finished today. More detailed results and some games later. For the last six years, SK Passau 1869 has organised the three Rivers Open - the Inn and the Ilz flow into the Donau in Passau - by the town's University. As McDonalds didn't prolong its sponsorship after three years of successful cooperation the Club's main sponsor filled the gap this year. The Haering company is one of the biggest companies in south-eastern Bavaria and has supported the Club's Bundesliga team for three years now. Though there were only 284 participants instead of 356, last year, the tournament was celebrated as a success as for the very first time the tournment it saw a German winner - GM Peter Enders from Erfurt playing for PSV Duisburg in German Bundesliga.

6) Mar del Plata

4th-12th of April saw the Abierto Mar del Plata tournament which was a nine round open won by IM Alfredo Giaccio with 7.5/9 ahead of a group of six players on 7 points including former Candidate Oscar Panno and Herman Van Riemsdijk.

7) Edinburgh Congress

John Henderson reports:

SCOTTISH No.1 GM Colin McNab, from Dundee, was on top form last weekend taking the first prize of 500(UK) at Scotland's premier weekend tournament, the Edinburgh Congress, played at George Heriot's School. Going into the crucial final round, McNab, who was the only player with a maximum score of 4/4, faced his toughest opponent of the weekend, IM Steve Mannion. At one stage it looked as if the game and first place was going to Mannion. However, being pressed for time, Mannion couldn't find a clear route to victory and had to settle for a draw giving McNab first place. 15-year old Elaine Rutherford, from Edinburgh, with an impressive 3/5 in the Open, became the first female to lift the Edinburgh Evening News Cup awarded to the best-placed under-18 junior in the top section. Kilmarnock proved to be at the wrong end of two tournament novelty prizes for the congress. The giant-killing prize for the tournament was awarded to Stephen Brown, Ardrossan, for his round three win over one of the pre-tournament favourites, John Shaw, Kilmarnock - a grading gap between the two of 425-points. The best game prize was awarded to Sam Collins, of Glasgow Montrose, for his round two victory in the Open over Nicholas Cameron, Kilmarnock.
