1) Introduction

My thanks to Anjo Anjewierden, Anne de Jonge, Dadi Jonsson and his Chess in Iceland page, Chess Assistant, Lost Boys, John Henderson, Alan Rawlings, Derek Jones, Angel Martin and Fdo. Jesús . Boyero, John Saunders, Emmanuel Santos, Stephane Laborde, Stewart Reuben and all those who helped with this issue.

A very busy week with many interesting events. The VAM tournament saw Emil Sutovskij enhance his reputation as an improving player, the VISA Grand Prix heads towards its conclusion in Reykjavic, Jan Timman and Predrag Nikolic play a short match for the Dutch title and numerous other events are in progress. Plenty for people to get their teeth into, in fact a number of other events have been held over until next week due to lack of time.

Hope you enjoy this issue

Mark

2) Vam Tournament Hoogeveen

The first VAM tournament took place in Hoogeveen in the Netherlands. It was a four player double round all-play-all event. 76 year old ex-World Champion Vassily Smyslov was joined by the 1996 World Junior champion Emil Sutovskij and two participants from the Tilburg tournament Loek Van Wely and Judit Polgar.

The tournament is played with glass chess pieces designed by Cees van Olst.

The event was won by Emil Sutovskij who looks likely to progress further in the near future. The Israeli player beat Judit Polgar in the first half of the event and did not lose a game.

5) Baburin wins the 6th Monarch Assurance Open

The Cherry Orchard Hotel on the Isle of Man is again the venue for the Monarch Assurance open from 4-12 October, reports John Henderson.

Monarch Assurance Open, Isle of Man. John Henderson reports:

"IT'S THE way I play them", joked Russian-Irish GM Alex Baburin, after his dazzling display in the Monarch Assurance Open, that saw him being crowned the 1997 "Manx Monarch King", as winner of the 6th Monarch Assurance Congress, 4-12 Oct, at The Cherry Orchard Hotel, Port Erin, Isle of Man.

Leaving nothing to chance, Baburin, dominated from start to finish, winning first prize with a round to spare among a strong international field, more than half of which were GMs and IMs. He blew the field apart, conceding just two draws, scoring 8/9 - a clear two points ahead of his nearest rivals - and in the process, taking home the first prize of 1,800 (sterling).

Now resident in Dublin with his family for over two years, Baburin has declared that he wishes to play under the Irish flag for international tournaments and has made himself available to play in the Irish national squad. Unfortunately, some Irish players objected to Baburin change of allegiance, wishing it to be revoked and that the Irish team should consist of only Irish nationalists - a policy that doesn't square well with the legendary selection process of the former successful Irish football boss Jackie Charlton: "Have you ever drunk Guinness, son?".

In reality, Baburin has proved to be a great asset to the game in Ireland. Not only has he placed the country firmly on the chess map with numerous tournament victories across the globe, he's also proving to be an influential coach to a large number of Irish youngsters, who are benefiting from his vast experience in the game.

Games in PGN format.

Though his family origins were in the Cheltenham area, he regarded himself as a West London man through and through, and during the thirty years that I knew him he lived in the same Hanwell house with his wife Jean. It was here that they brought up their two sons; it was here that his cat Zoë rose to fame in the correspondence chess world. His working life was spent with the railways, not on the line but in the back rooms; when he retired he was manager of the printing operation for a substantial part of our national network.

Reg had been President of the British Postal Chess Federation since 1992, and had previously served the Federation as Treasurer and Secretary, and for many years as International Secretary and ICCF Delegate. As far as I can trace, Reg's involvement with correspondence chess began in 1962 when he joined the National Correspondence Chess Club. Within months he was on the club's committee, and remained on the committee almost without break till his death. When I first joined the club in 1967 he was well-established as editor of Natcor's magazine 'En Passant', and had the happy knack of blending serious chess writing - both opinions and games - with humour.

Reg was also involved for very many years with the British Correspondence Chess Society as editor of their excellent bi-monthly magazine 'Chess Post'. It was in 'Chess Post' that Zoë the cat came to fame as editorial writer, her work supervised in print by a caricature of Reg as some dominant figure from ancient mythology. It's a measure of his success that the print run is now so large that professional editing and distribution seems the only way to emulate his voluntary efforts.

Reg became involved with BPCF soon after its foundation and remained actively involved right up to his death. His biggest influence was on international matters. As British delegate to the International Correspondence Chess Federation and as our representative at many ICCF Congresses he set standards of effectiveness that those following find hard to match. He was Tournament Director for BPCF's first very successful venture into international tournament organisation, the memorial to former BPCF Secretary Bob Potter, and edited the subsequent tournament book (out of print, but obtainable from BPCF). He also served ICCF for several years as Tournament Secretary for the World Championship tournaments, running semi-finals, three-quarter-finals and finals, and was awarded ICCF's International Arbiter title in 1981.

His special interest, though, was in rules. He served ICCF first as a member of the Rules Commission, then as Vice-Chairman and latterly as Chairman. During this time Reg developed what will be his legacy to correspondence chess worldwide: the new Playing Rules that were adopted in 1996. His retirement from this work was marked in 1996 by ICCF by the award of Honorary Membership - a singular accolade that he did not know was coming and left him stuck for words for once - and by BPCF by his election as an Honorary Life Vice-President, a distinction hitherto reserved for Grandmasters.

Reg was a sociable man, but a private man too. He understood the need for effective communication and felt a little handicapped when he first attended ICCF Congresses because the predominant language was then German. His answer to that was to sign up at the Goethe Institute in London for a course in conversational German, and by the time I first went to Congress with him it was sometimes difficult to get him talking English! He made many friends internationally, and there are many 'Reg' stories. I particularly like one told me by Gian-Maria Tani about Reg's final Congress in 1996. He and Gian-Maria were sitting together at the opening banquet, and the conversation turned to food... to pasta. "Yes," said Reg, who knew a bit about cooking, "I like spaghetti. I only cook it for 20 minutes..." to which the reply came from the Italian "So you like eating poster glue?" Reg laughed... and laughed... and laughed....

Reg was not just a correspondence player, though. In earlier years he played over the board for Railways, and in retirement he took advantage of his railway pensioner's travel concession to journey the length and breadth of the country playing in weekend congresses. My daughters still remember meeting him towards the end of one of these, playing a blind man and producing a clever sacrificial attack to win a last round game that only counted for pride. As he grew older Reg was conscious of a loss of sharpness, which he put down to a lack of fitness - as a diabetic, his diet was already well under control. He started walking more, and ironically it was on one of these extended morning walks that his fatal heart attack happened.

Correspondence chess players in Britain and indeed the world over owe a great deal to Reg. We shall miss him.

The 'Reg Gillman Memorial Fund' has been established with the general goal of furthering BPCF activity in international correspondence chess, and it is likely that a memorial tournament will be staged. Any donations should be sent to:

11) London International GM Tournament

Adam Raoof has organised three tournaments in London. A GM, IM and rating event. Adam has just been awarded the title of FIDE International organizer a much deserved award for someone who has, since June 1996 organised: 7 IM norm tournaments (1 cat 3, 5 cat 4 and 1 cat 6) 1 GM tournament (cat 10) 2 Challenge Matches 1 team event (London vs Beijing) 2 swisses and 4 FIDE rating tournaments. Great stuff.

The current series of events in London take place October 18th-24th at the University College School, Frognal, Hampstead NW3.

There is full coverage on the 4 Nations Chess League pages edited by John Saunders.
