1) Introduction

My thanks to Robert Spörri, My thanks to Lost Boys, Jon Tisdall, Laszlo Nagy, Anjo Anjewierden, Robert Ericsson and all those who helped with this issue.

Topalov won the strongest event of the week in Antwerp. His performance in the Crown Group of the Lost Boys event was very impressive, as was the return to form of Victor Korchnoi. The British Championships is just hotting up (as is the weather here) and should produce some interesting chess next week.

Hope you enjoy this issue

Mark

2) Lost Boys Chess Festival.

The Zuiderpershuis in Antwerp was the venue for the 5th in the series of chess tournaments sponsored by Lost Boys. The festival took place between August 1st-10th. There were three open groups of various strengths as well as a "Crown Group" an eight player all-play-all event. The was internet coverage daily including live games at:

http://www.lostcity.nl/chess/antwerp97/games.html

The Crown group was won comfortably by ELO favourite Topalov. Topalov needed a very high score to retain his rating and his 2800+ result was even better than that. He conceded only 3 draws, two with black and was obviously the class act in the field. Victor Korchnoi has had a rough year and this marked a return to form, he only lost one game, to the winner Topalov (a complicated Benko Gambit where he went astray before the first time control after being better) the only other player to have a + result in terms of rating was Ye Rongguang who was the only player to hold Topalov with Black.

3) Michael Adams favourite for the British Chess Championships

The strongest British Chess Championships in many years is taking place in Hove England from August 4th-15th. A good turnout has been ensured by Smith & Williamson the new sponsors of the event but it is also a good social event and this has undoubtably helped the turnout also. Michael Adams made a confident start with his expected rivals hitting trouble early on. He currently shares the lead with Aaron Summerscale.

There is live coverage of some games and full results pages at at:http://www.ndirect.co.uk/~peterwalker/bcf/frame.htm

6) 1997 US Open Championships

The 98th US Open Championships are underway in Orlando Florida. More coverage next week, the format with its multi-entries and busy man formats means that understandings the standings early on is practically impossible. The event started on August 3rd but only on August 11th were the last entries to accelerated schedules accepted. More news next week.

7) Stockholm International Chess Tournament.

The Stockholm International Chess Tournament takes place between 4-15 of August.

http://www.geocities.com/Colosseum/1236/stock.html

After 6 rounds the event is being led by Helgi Olafsson, Tarvo Seeman and Mikhail Rytshagov. Perhaps the greatest talking point might be what was going on in Patrick Lyrberg's mind during his round 6 game. A 3 move loss, the bulletin states

"We have spoken to Patrik Lyrberg concerning his game against Ralf Akesson. Patrik apologises the incident to all the players in the tournament, especially Ralf. It is a shame the incident occured in a tournament but we h have decided that Patrik should continue to participate. However we will report the incident to the Swedish Rules and Arbiter Committee to decide what further actions should be taken. Tournament organisers"

I've seen such games when people are having a bad tournament but this didn't seem to be the case here. Very strange.

My thanks to all those who sent the answer in to this query. Robert Ericsson gave the following reply (as did a few others)

"GM Ulf Andersson, Sweden, played a simul in Alvsjo, Sweden, on the 6th of January 1996 over 310 boards. His result was +268 =40 -2 and all in all the simul took 15 hours and 23 minutes to play.

The former record was held by Dmitrije Bjelickas who played 301 players in Sarajevo in 1982.

Ulf Andersson´s record was observed by a arbiter from The Guiness Book of Records.
