My thanks to Robert Spörri, Lost Boys, Rod McShane, Philipp Schlosser, Laszlo Nagy, Artur Zaremba, Graziano Ottolini, Juan Minaya, Pieter de Jager, John Hurley, Bernard Sojka, Lars Ronnow, Harry Cattoir, Angel Jiminez Arteaga, Chris Chase and all those who helped with this issue. Another huge issue with over 1000 games and a weekend spent just trying not to lose track. The finish of the Biel Festival and the start of the Lost Boys event form the international highlights but the re-emergence of a recognisable British Championships is the highlight for this Yorkshireman.
Apologies for those who found my pages unobtainable earlier in the week, a disk crashed in Canada taking the pages down. It will take a little time to restore the games part of the previous issues of twic. I hope towards the end of the week.
Hope you enjoy this issue

The 30th Biel Chess Festival was the last year that 70 year old Hans Suri will organise the event. The managed two 6 player grandmaster tournaments and a large open aswell as a range of other events. It is also the last year of sponsorship by Credit Suisse. They are pretty certain to organise at least an open next year but there are a number of players talking about the contraction in big international closed and open events. A situation that would be far worse without the special economic conditions that allow local councils in Spain to organise prestigious events. The event produced some interesting chess, that Anand and Karpov had to keep up a quite high level of scoring saw to that. In the Credis event Onischuk showed that he is a solid all round player, he will play against Kasparov in September in the Fontys tournament (Vladimir Kramnik, Alexei Shirov, Michael Adams, Loek van Wely, Jeroen Piket, Peter Svidler, Peter Leko, Joel Lautier, Onichuk and Kasparov play in the event running 26th September - 9 October). The games from the open event will appear next week. The most spectacular win was Anand's round 1 win over Lautier.
My thanks to Robert Spörri for the games and the bulletin
There is some question about the gamescore for the game below. The bulletin gives it as in the games section but there is a fairly good chance that the correct moves are below. PKarrer on ICC says that this is the version given in "SonntagsZeitung" . I will check it for next week.

The second international grandmaster chess tournament took place in Bad Homburg, Germany 27th July - 3rd August. The Category 14 event ended in victory for Rustem Dautov above Peter Svidler and Boris Alterman. The event brought to an end a run of success for Emil Sutovskij who only scored 3/9. Dautov played solidly but won two very strange games, one against Sutovskij where the Israeli overpressed and one against Christopher Lutz who cannot have being paying attention when he made his 10th move blunder that led to immediate resignation.

Thanks to Rod McShane and Philipp Schlosser.
The 7th Lippstadt Grandmaster Tournament has been won for the third time by former World Women's Champion Maia Chiburdanidze. This time the Georgian GM was outright winner. Sponsored for the third time by Hans and Lenze, the largest construction company in Westphalia, the event has become a highly popular invitation for local GMs as the number of repeat appearances bears witness - Philipp Schlosser has played here four times, Thomas Luther three and Markus Stangl twice.
This year's Category IX event featured five GMs, 3 IMs, the three strongest available players from the local club LSV/Turm Lippstadt '96, and the computer Zugzwang developed at nearby Paderborn University.
At the start of play the German Federation offered to add 1400 Deutschmarksto the prize fund if players would agree to try the innovative scoring system with three points for a win, one for a draw, zero for a loss. As this added an additional prize to the list and Zugzwang was ineligible for prize money, this was readily accepted by all the players with one abstention. If the remarkably low number of draws is any indication the experiment was a success. The same offer was made to the participants of the Bad Homburg tournament (Kat.XIV) the following week, but it wasn't accepted there and the rate of draws - especially short draws - has been much higher there so far.
The tournament was both hard fought and conducted in a very friendly atmosphere. There were a pleasingly high number of upsets, but after a first round loss to former World Junior Champion and top seed Roman Slobodjan Chiburdanidze was easily the most consistent player in the tournament and a thoroughly deserving victor.
IMs Sune Berg Hansen from Denmark and 37 year-old Liang Jinrong from China, a veteran of seven Olympiads, were each trying for their third and final GM norm. Luke McShane from London, at present the world's youngest IM, is chasing his first norm. None of these players achieved the necessary 7/10 for this, but the good news is that local player FM Stefan Wehmeier achieved his final IM norm with 5/10. (Games against the computer do not count for norm or rating purposes.)
Lippstadter Stefan Homann, easily the lowest rated player in the tournament, battled gamely round after round with little to show for it. Eventually, his patience paid off when GM Schlosser blundered horribly in Round 10 and Homann chalked up his only win of the tournament.
The third Lippstadter Heiner Matthias had a double involvement in the tournament. As well as having played in all seven tournaments he is a member of the Zugzwang development team at Paderborn, responsible for the computer's openings book.
Zugzwang, which has played in several previous Lippstadt tournaments and makes a financial contribution to the event, caused some apprehension among the players when it beat Luke McShane in the first round. The computer had performed at 2620 level in the April Man versus Machine Aegon Tournament in The Hague. But after this first win it could manage only 5 draws.
The prize fund table was: 1. GM Chiburdanidze 24 2. GM Roman Slobodjan 22 3. GM Markus Stangl 20 4= IM Sune Berg Hansen 17 GM Thomas Luther 6. Lippstadt is a small town of 60,000 people but with 150 active chess players. Last year the town's two clubs merged to form club LSV/Turm Lippstadt '96. One club had most of the town's stronger players, the other had the juniors. The resulting club is now greater than the sum of its parts.
But why should a relatively small town in Germany host an annual Category IX grandmaster tournament? Club President Klaus Muenster explained that he thought this was very important for the club's development: "We want to give our best players the chance to play the equivalent of a whole Bundesliga season in one tournament. We very much want to keep them at the Club." With generous daily coverage in the local newspaper the event undoubtedly also increases the profile of chess in the town.
As well as the generous sponsorship from Hans and Lenze, the event benefits from superb playing conditions. The event takes place in the Hotel Treff, easily the town's best. The players have their own table in the hotel restaurant which serves superb food in massive quantities. And the friendliness and helpfulness of the tournament's enthusiastic organizers makes for a great atmosphere.
The Hans and Lenze Open held in parallel with the GM tournament this year attracted 55 players including three IMs.

The annual summer tournament in Dieren (Holland), carrying the title Dutch Open again after three years, was visited by six grandmasters, fourteen international masters and a respectable number of strong Dutch players. All in all, around 450 participants attended the event. The favorites Vladimir Chuchelov and Valery Beim were out of form. The Dutch Open was dominated from the start by grandmasters Alexander Finkel and Viktor Mikhalevski from Israel. Rongguang Ye from China was patiently waiting for his chance to slip in. The Dutch player Dennis de Vreugt (16) joined the leaders in the last round for a hair-raising finish. After eight rounds, De Vreugt had already scored a master result, but he didn't satisfy himself with a quick draw, proposed by his opponent Finkel. The 22-year-old Israeli, who will quit professional chess after Dieren to study law in his home country, had to fight for more than sixty moves to secure the draw. Ye beat the Uzbek master Alexei Barsov to join Finkel and Mikhalevski for first place. Finkel was proclaimed Dutch Open Champion. My thanks to Pieter de Jager.

The 12th Open de Touraine was won by the titled players. It was also possible to play a lot of other games : draughts, gyges, quarto, abalone, petanque, and ..... soccer. But grandmasters did not want to break their legs.... and started only in the chess competition. Wonderful castles to visit, tasting french wines and bathing in the sun could help the organisers who want to reach 400 players and tourists next year. A lot of players from Japan appreciated the spirit of this exhibition. It's really a tournament for the whole family....

Angel Jiminez Arteaga sends 17 games from a simultaneous exhibition given by Veselin Topalov in the Canary Islands. Topalov now lives in Las Palmas and plays in the Canary Islands team championships.
Chris Chase asks what the current record for the numbers taking part in a simultaneous exhibition is. He thinks it may be over 100 boards and has been set by a Swiss master. He has seen books with Hort holding the record but is almost sure it has been exceeded. Any ideas?
