1) Introduction

My thanks to Net 64, ChessAssistant, Chess Planet, Herman Claudius van Riemsdijk, Laszlo Nagy, Chia Chee Seng, Ed Schroder and Carlo Mazzoni, John Henderson, Piotr Nestorow, Jesper Mygind, Patrick Bensch, Loukas Zahilas, Pablo Rodriguez, Marco R. Martini (ITA) and all those who helped with this issue.

Another busy week of over the board chess aswell as on the FIDE front. Anand should feel himself under pressure to win by a large margin against Illescas for this match to be useful to him. A ruthless treatment of Illescas would be a good indicator of intent from him. Novgorod (where it would have been nice to see him play) starts tommorrow and this sees Kasparov's first appearance since his debacle against Deep Blue. Some indication as to the problems all top computer programs pose was the losses of Efimov and Jussupow this week. I find such contests both unedifying yet inevitable. In such a context the progress of the lightweight FIDE KO contest is also interesting. Is this the death of serious chess matches in favour of the quick fix every year? FIDE will host their final under the auspices of the IOC in their multi-million dollar folly of the Olympic Museum in Lausanne. An appearance of chess in the Olympiacs is still many years away. The format is Olympic friendly but chess's appearance in the Olympics is probably a minimum of a decade away. I'll return to this topic at a later time but a crowded week has plenty of chess occupied my time. Hope you enjoy this issue

Mark

2) Leon Tournament and Anand match

Spain continues with its astonishing range and number of events a year with a Category 10 tournament and a 6 game match between Viswanathan Anand and Miguel Illescas. The match should be an interesting one for assessing the form of Anand. Illescas is a gifted player but Anand ought to be a comfortable winner. If he matches his form prior to his match against Kasparov then he should win three or more games against Illescas.

3) 50th Russian Chess Championships

Peter Svidler takes Championships.

Peter Svidler who lost the first game of three of his five matches took the 50th Russian Championships after recovering against Evgeny Bareev in the final. Alexei Dreev beat Alexander Lastin in the playoff for 3rd and 4th. (He won the first and drew the second game.

This is Svidler's third Russian Championship title a remarkable record. His play in events in the west has been less impressive but perhaps it is only a matter of time before he succeeds there also. For me his most impressive game was his brutal victory in his second game against Alexei Dreev. The final was a ding-dong affair. A snap mate in the 7th game (the third blitz game) sapped Bareev's spirit finally.

Evgeny Bareev looked at one stage to be destined for a solid top ten position in the World rankings. Some technical weaknesses, especially in the endgame and the suspicion that perhaps his nerve was not the best in the most tense situations has seen him have a lower profile in recent years. Perhaps there are signs of a return to form here. He was especially impressive in his victory with white over Alexander Lastin in the semi-finals. His participation in the Novgorod tournament should test his form more completely.

Dreev defeated Lastin in the 3rd/4th place playoff. Dreev's rather dull style hides an extremely strong player who was possibly a little unlucky in his semi-final defeat by Svidler in running into an inspired performance from his opponent when he required a draw. Lastin (21 years of age) also had a fine event. Just confirmed as a Grandmaster he may very well be a name to look out for in the near future.

The 50th Russian Chess Championships adopted the knockout method that FIDE plans to use later in the year for their "World Championship" event. A healthy turnout was almost guaranteed with $500 for first round losers and $15,000 for the winner.

The system was two normal time-rate games played over two days followed by (in the case of a tie) two rapid (25 minute) games. If the players are still tied then groups of two blitz games are played until a winner is established.

ChessAssistant are publishing the games at:

http://www.demon.co.uk/convekta/

ChessAssistant's reference to the format as the olympic system is in fact just the Russian for a knockout translated into English.

4) FIDE agreement with IOC

At a joint FIDE/IOC press conference on Thursday that the final of the 1997/98 World Chess Championships would be held at the Olympic Museum in Lausanne in association with the City of Lausanne and the Swiss Chess Federation.

Schedule details: Preliminary Stages: 8th-25th December 1997 in Groningen, Netherlands.
Semi-Finals: 26th-31st December 1997 in Elista the capitial of the Kalmyk Republic of Russia.
Finals 1st-9th January 1998 in the IOC Museum Lausanne Switzerland.

The prizefund is $5m US and for the first time the FIDE President Kirsan Iljumzhinov indicated the main sponsor who will provide most of this money. The company is called Halzan which is an oil and gas company from Russia. The question as to what they expect from this deal is one that might be interesting to pursue.

Iljumzhinov also outlined some of his strategy for the future of chess in an interview with Chess Planet. He is pursuing his campaign to get chess recognised as an Olympic Sport with an official application to follow. He has played this quite cleverly as the FIDE Museum in Lausanne is a pet project of IOC President Juan Antonio Samaranch. His additional short term plans include a World Grand Prix which I would hope might be based upon the GMA Grand Prix of a number of years ago.

He also clarified the interview that he made with a Russian newspaper which opened speculation about the possibility of the computer "Deep Blue" in FIDE events. He said that his comments were personal and that now "FIDE wants to be fully integrated into the Olympic movement, all questions concerning the computer will only be resolved after consultations with the IOC especially with President Samaranch."

9) Italian computer exhibition events

Two computer human exhibition matches took place over the last week which again showed how tricky it is to play these machines. My thanks to Ed Schroder and Carlo Mazzoni for the games.

Rebel vs Jussupow

Ed Schroder the programmer of Rebel took his computer to Ischia and island and scored a convincing victory over Artur Jussupow. There were a number of problems which meant the match didn't quite achieve the pre-match format. Due to a delay in travelling the match didn't kick off until 9pm on the first day. Only 7 of the scheduled 10 5 minute games were played as both Rebel operator Rob Kemper and Jussupow were tired. The 5 15 minute games on the second day were shared. On day three there was an extra half hour per side game played to make up for the games missed on day one. Jussupow won 2-1. On the final day there was scheduled one one hour per side game. Due to a power cut in the building the game had to be abandonned and because Jussupow had to catch a flight they played 2 more 15 minute games which were split 1-1. Rather provocatively Jusspow commented at the end of the match that "In all 17 games Rebel played sensible moves. I never saw Rebel playing one senseless move as I have seen Deep Blue playing some in the recent match against Kasparov."

The computer ran on a Pentium-II at 266 Mhz.

Morovic to play in Colombia by Pablo Rodriguez

Post-script. Shirov points out that there is something not quite right, at least with the dates for this event.

Pablo Rodriguez reports that the Chilean newspaper "El Mercurio" says that:

After his first place in the "Magistral Najdorf" in Buenos Aires, Argentina, chilean GM Ivan Morovic will play in a cat. XIV tournament in Colombia, June 20th to July 4th. There he will face Adams, Short, Hodgson and Miles from England, Arencibia and Rodríguez from Cuba, Zapata and Garcia from Colombia, Granda Zuniga from Peru and Milos from Brazil. Morovic has increased his Elo rating by about 30 points after his good performances in New York, Las Vegas, the Capablanca Memorial and the Magistral Najdorf and hopes to increase it even more after this tournament in Colombia. Morovic said he is getting very good results with the Sicilian Najdorf, which he first tried against Michael Adams in a match in January, where he lost, but he is very self-confident now and he is getting in shape for the World Championship at the end of the year where he hopes to get a very good result.
