The World Chess Championship might have finished but the major events keep coming. The Russian Championship is always a major event in the calendar and after four of nine rounds it's hard to say who will win. The Qatar Open is one of the strongest opens ever with Anish Giri and Vladimir Kramnik heading the field. Kramnik had a slow start but he's into his stride now and faces Giri in the seventh round. Giri has a perfect 6/6 score. Already it looks like this will run again next year. Less seriously Magnus Carlsen and Garry Kasparov played exhibition events, Nakamura beat Aronian in the final blitz part of their match. Later this week the London Chess Classic starts.
TWIC turned 20 on September 17th. You can read my article 20 years of TWIC. which includes a full listing of all issues including all the texts. I have all the PGNs but that's a very large file but a ChessBase cbv archive format can be bought for £30 which will help me head out from this landmark. Garry Kasparov played an exhibition event in Tokyo sponsored by Dwango and shown on Nicovideo on November 28th 2014. Kasparov played against the shogi champion and chess FM Yoshiharu Habu in advance of the latter's computer shogi exhibitions. Kasparov won both 25 minute plus 10 seconds a move games but admitted he had "everything to lose" in achieving the expected result. There is a video replay available on the official site in Japanese but Kasparov gives his answers in English (registration required). Kasparov demonstrated one of the games, talked about computers, shogi and Carlsen amongst other subjects.

Magnus Carlsen played an exhibition event on the NRK TV channel in Norway. There main game was Norway vs Carlsen. There were some technical problems early on which meant later moves were played in turbo mode (about 30 seconds a move) and the Norway position collapsed rapidly. Carlsen started 7 other simultaneous games against teams including the family Carlsen, chess juniors, politicians, journalists, members of the public etc. I believe some of these may have been better games and become available later. November 30th was also Magnus Carlsen's birthday and he was presented with a cake and a present of a framed cartoon of him with Donald Duck.

The very strong German Schachbundesliga takes place Sat 18th Oct 2014 to Sun 12th Apr 2015. The next rounds are Friday 7th November for the first of the split round 7 (a retrograde step in my view, rather than finishing with three rounds they split one round in this very untidy way I can only think that there are financial considerations) and November 8th and 9th for rounds 3-4.
