Magnus Carlsen has returned to World Number One in the January 2011 FIDE Rating List (if the finished Pearl Spring tournament had been included he would never have lost it) but there is only a small gap between him, World Champion Viswanathan Anand and Levon Aronian who are all over 2800. The Tata Steel tournament in Wijk aan Zee will see these three fight it out for World Number One.

Magnus Carlsen regains the top spot in the FIDE rating list after being displaced by World Champion Viswanathan Anand in November. At that time the Pearl Spring tournament in China had finished too late for inclusion in the list which would have kept him at number one. Both players had roughly the same rating performance in London. Carlsen on 2814 is four points in front of Anand 2810 with Levon Aronian just behind on 2805 after a good result in the Tal Memorial. Vladimir Kramnik remains at four, Sergey Karjakin rises to 5 in the World after gains in the Tal Memorial and Russian Championships. Veselin Topalov drops one to 6, Alexander Grischuk is at 7, Shakhriyar Mamedyarov is at 8, Vassily Ivanchuk at 9 and Hikaru Nakamura reaches a new high at 2751 and enters the top 10 for the first time.

At 15 in the World after his performance in winning the Russian Championship is Ian Nepomniatchtchi. 39 players are rated at 2700 or over. 2649 is the rating that gets you in the list. Luke McShane becomes England's number 2 after his gains and Short's losses at the London Chess Classic. Anish Giri remains the Dutch Number One.

The top junior is Fabiano Caruana ahead of Anish Giri as Carlsen is now too old for this list. Perhaps significantly new Women's World Champion Hou Yifan is 13 in this open list at only the age of 16 and she is number three women's player in the world behind Judit Polgar and Humpy Koneru. These three are the only women players over 2600.
