Veselin Topalov took the lead in the 4th Sinquefield Cup after grinding out a victory against Ding Liren in the final game to finish. Ding sacrificed a pawn in the opening against but then lost much of his compensation and stood much worse. Ding fought back to give himself very good drawing chances before falling at the final hurdle in a dramatic finish to a difficult endgame.
Peter Svidler and Hikaru Nakamura drew a very sharp Kings Indian/Modern game.
Wesley So played some preparation he'd previously intended for Anish Giri against Viswanathan Anand who couldn't solve the problems and the game ended in a draw.
Anish Giri didn't get much of an edge against Levon Aronian and they traded to a drawn endgame.
Fabiano Caruana got a large advantage against Maxime Vachier-Lagrave in the Sicilian but just couldn't find a way to increase it and MVL found a nice liquidation to a drawn bishops of opposite colour endgame.
Round 5 standings: Topalov 3.5pts/5, Aronian, So, Anand 3pts, Caruana, Nakamura 2.5pts, Ding, Giri, MVL 2pts, Svidler 1.5pts.
Rest day Wednesday 10th August 2016.
Round 6 pairings Thursday 11th August 7pm UK time: Aronian-MVL, Nakamura-Caruana, Ding-Svidler, So-Topalov, Giri-Anand.
