Chessable Houska's Caro

4th Sinquefield Cup 2016 (4)

Second round of draws in Sinquefield Cup Round 4

Hikaru Nakamura against Veselin Topalov was a sharp struggle in a Bf4 Queen's Gambit where Topalov gave up his queen for Rook, Bishop and Pawn. Topalov missed a chance to get a big advantage with 16...Bd4 (16.g3 should have been played by Nakamura) but had plenty of compensation to start with. Nakamura seemed to be making progress before allowing a liquidation of the queenside after which the game was soon drawn.

Maxime Vachier-Lagrave and Peter Svidler drew a sharp Ruy Lopez that converted into a Sicilian pawn structure. After 19.Ng3 a4 black had at least equalised and the players agreed a draw in a dynamically balanced position on move 35.

Anish Giri obtained a very nice Stonewall structure as black against Wesley So but So gradually traded his way to equality.

Viswanathan Anand got near equality out of the opening with accurate play against Ding Liren and comfortably held the draw.

Levon Aronian admitted to being ill the previous night through something he ate and he traded his way to a quick draw against Fabiano Caruana's Benoni.

Round 4 standings: Aronian, So, Anand, Topalov 2.5pts/4, Ding, Caruana, Nakamura 2pts, Giri, MVL 1.5pts, Svidler 1pt.

Round 5 pairings: Tuesday 9th August 2016 7pm UK time: Giri-Aronian, Anand-So, Topalov-Ding, Svidler-Nakamura, Caruana-MVL
