Hikaru Nakamura won the Rapid section of Grand Chess Tour Paris tournament. He was half a point clear of World Champion Magnus Carlsen. This result will be combined with the result of the blitz to find an over all winner of the event.

After a draw with Wesley So in the first game of the day Nakamura scored successive wins against Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, Levon Aronian and then finally against Fabiano Caruana. Caruana lost all four games on the second day and this final loss was perhaps the worst. Caruana played a bad opening but Nakamura over-reached and was in big trouble before some inaccurate moves led to a drawn position. Caruana then contrived to get himself checkmated.

Magnus Carlsen was a little less impressive than on day 1. He did beat a struggling Veselin Topalov in round 6 but then drew against Anish Giri in a game with white where he was never really better and failed to convert a great chance against Laurent Fressinet. He ground down Vladimir Kramnik in quite impressive style in the final round but it didn't prove enough to catch Nakamura.

Final Standings (points count double in the final standings after the blitz): Nakamura 7 points, Carlsen 6.5pts, So, Vachier-Lagrave 5.5pts, Kramnik 5pts, Giri, Aronian 4.5pts, Fressinet 2.5pts, Topalov, Caruana 2pts.

There are 18 rounds of blitz over the weekend to follow.
