Hou Yifan has played a lot of chess recently. Her last performances in the AAI GM tournament and Hangzhou WGM events were disappointing but this is all clearly part of a training process for her title defence later in the year. Here she has started fast with 2/2. Rival Humpy Koneru had to work hard to hold a rook and pawn ending against Stefanova. Ruan Lufei and Nadezhda Kosintseva both scored wins. Brief report follows.

Hou Yifan scored a second victory to lead alone on 2/2. She beat Alisa Galliamova who also lost in the first round. Her 9.Bf3 seems like it was a new move and Galliamova was in trouble straight away after her 9...d5 and she never really recovered.

Humpy Koneru would surely have liked to strike back straight away from her loss in round 2 but she had the worse of a draw against Antoaneta Stefanova allbeit that the Rook and Pawn ending was very drawish and after a lenthy defence she managed to hold.

Elina Danielian

Elina Danielian had a major say in the last FIDE Grand Prix in Doha and her aggressive intuitive style took centre stage there. Here she had a very reasonable position as black against Ruan Lufei until her 40th move Nc6 which was a blunder that allowed a rook access to her queenside pawns and this eventually cost her the game.

Nadezhda Kosintseva surprised Ekaterina Kovalevskaya with 7...Na6 in a Queen's Gambit and quickly got a nice position. 15.Ng5 was an aggressive idea that didn't work, and Kovalevskaya defended well and then played safely to secure the full point.

Tatiana Kosintseva against Anna Muzychuk and Kateryna Lahno against Alexandra Kosteniuk were both drawn.
