FIDE Candidates 2016 (10)

Caruana defeats Anand to join Karjakin in the lead after Candidates Round 10

Fabiano Caruana introduced a strong novelty against Viswanathan Anand and scored a powerful victory in round 10 of the Candidates in Moscow. Levon Aronian also had a large advantage against Veselin Topalov which would have allowed him to join the leaders too but several oversights even left him on the defencive towards the end. After 10 rounds Sergey Karjakin and Caruana lead on 6/10 half a point clear of Aronian and Anand.

Caruana'a 12.Qc2 was an improvement over the game Aronian-Anand St Louis 2015. The move set extremely difficult problems for Anand which proved impossible to solve over the board. After 17.Qe2 Caruana obtained extremely dangerous attacking chances. Anand fought off the attack but the endgame was very difficult and 22...Ne4 was a bad move the Anand was unable to recover from.

Aronian got a nasty advantage in an English vs Topalov but a hasty 28.c5 lost much of the advantage and a few moves later his chances had gone. Peter Svidler prepared and played exactly the same variation against Hikaru Nakamura but the US player knew the opening much better than Topalov and equality and a draw followed.

Anish Giri's excellent opening preparation allowed him equalisation against Sergey Karjakin and the game was drawn in 34 moves.

Notes in the PGN section.
