Alexander Morozevich and Magnus Carlsen drew a fascinating and difficult Gruenfeld in the ACCENTUS GM section of the 44th Biel Chess Festival. Alexei Shirov ground down Caruana and Vachier gave perpetual check against Pelletier. There is a rest day Thursday. Round 4 July 22nd 1 pm UK time Shirov-Vachier-Lagrave, Morozevich-Pelletier, Carlsen-Caruana.

Alexei Shirov beat Fabiano Caruana in the only decisive game of the day of the top section in Biel. Caruana had more than enough compensation for a pawn but once he lost his passed d-pawn it was only a matter of time before Shirov ground him down.

Alexander Morozevich and Magnus Carlsen halved the points in a very complicated and interesting Gruenfeld Defence with 4.Bg5. Carlsen looked to be taking quite a few risks and eventually emerged with a slightly better position but it was not enough.

Yannick Pelletier looked to have slightly the better of it early on against Maxime Vachier-Lagrave's King's Indian but once black sacrificed a piece to open up his king a draw was the most likely result.

Note that the organisers are using three points for a win. Round 4 22nd July 2011.
