Magnus Carlsen returned to winning ways at the Biel Chess Festival 2011 beating Yannick Pelletier in 42 moves of an unsual French Defence. Carlsen now leads on 13/18 three points clear of Alexander Morozevich might well have beaten Alexei Shirov in a very sharp game. 7th round Tuesday July 26th 1 pm UK time: Morozevich-Vachier, Shirov-Carlsen and Pelletier-Caruana.

Magnus Carlsen extended his lead again beating Yannick Pelletier from an insipid looking opening choice against the French Defence. Carlsen did retain his favourite two bishops and eventually worked up a decisive attack in a queenless middle-game/ending that proved decisive.

Maxime Vachier-Lagrave and Fabiano Caruana drew an interesting English by repetition on move 35.

Alexander Morozevich got a decisive advantage against Alexei Shirov in a very sharp Nimzo-Indian. Shirov launched a dangerous looking but ultimately unsound attack as black. Winning moves for Morozevich included 28.Qc3, 29.Qc1 and finally 31.Qc3 stopping 31...Bf3 after which it was Morozevich who had to be careful. A draw was agreed on move 40.

Note that the organisers are using three points for a win and one for a draw.
