There was an interesting first round to the Tata Steel tournament although just two games finished decisively with the two Dutch players being defeated.

Ian Nepomniachtchi caught Anish Giri completely by surprise in using the Pirc Defence and Giri never seemed comfortable. 16.f4 is dubious, 17.Bf3 is probably already losing for white and his piece sacrifice the following move didn't work. Viswanathan Anand beat debutant Lucas Van Foreest with the black pieces. The players castled on opposite sides and from about move 20 Anand moved ahead in the race to attack and won very quickly. The remaining games were drawn.

Round 1 Standings: Anand, Nepomniachtchi 1pt, Carlsen, Mamedyarov, Kramnik, Radjabov, Duda, Rapport, Shankland, Fedoseev, Vidit and Ding 0.5pts and Giri, Van Foreest 0pts

Round 2 Sunday 13th Jan: Carlsen-Nepomniachtchi, Kramnik-Giri, Mamedyarov-Radjabov, Rapport-Shankland Anand-Fedoseev, Duda-Van Foreest Ding-Vidit

After about 6 moves Ding Liren and Magnus Carlsen were on their own in very non-standard position after 1.Nf3 Nf6 2.g3 b5!? Carlsen admitted he probably over did things with 10.Nc6 and but quite quickly the pieces started to come off and a totally drawn position was reached at move 32. Vladimir Kramnik also probably overdid things a bit and was completely busted on the run up to first time control. Radjabov had minutes left but didn't find 39.Qd3 which seems the simplest way to win and after 40.Rxa4 he lost his entire advantage as he allowed perpetual check. 40.Rc1 maintained good chances. The computers spike at the end of the draw between Sam Shankland and Shakhriyar Mamedyarov with 49.Kd5 and 50.Kd5 being given as very strong but the opportunities were allowed to slide by. Vladimir Fedoseev vs Richard Rapport was an interesting Queen's Indian, Jan-Krzysztof Duda won a pawn against Santosh Vidit but didn't get many winning chances.
