81st Tata Steel Chess Tournament 2019 (10)

Carlsen beats Anand to lead the Tata Steel Masters after 10 rounds

Magnus Carlsen took the sole lead of the Tata Steel Masters after grinding down Viswanathan Anand in a long knight and pawn endgame on the road in Leiden. It probably could have been drawn but it was certainly no fun for anyone to defend.

Having talked up Vladimir Fedoseev's prospects after round 8 he went and lost in round 9 to Anish Giri. This was a rather messy struggle where Giri won the exchanges in the last ten move before move 40. Giri moved right back into contention in clear second place with this win.

Richard Rapport beat Jan-Krzysztof Duda at the end of an interesting but balanced Trompowsky. Duda set up mate which failed due to a hidden trick 34...f4+ although it could hardly have been a surprise such a resource existed.

Jorden Van Foreest scored his third win of the event this time downing joint leader Ian Nepomniachtchi. The players castled on opposite sides of the board in a sharp Sicilian, Van Foreest's attack arrived first, 26...Nf6? (26...Ne3 seems to hold) was the decisive mistake losing material which was eventually converted to a win.

Ding Liren and Shakhriyar Mamedyarov drew in 46 reasonably well played moves. Sam Shankland and Teimour Radjabov drew in a Catalan. Santosh Gujrathi Vidit beat a clearly dispirited Vladimir Kramnik who is quite unrecognisable at the moment. I'm not sure what's wrong.

Round 10 Standings: 1 Carlsen 7, 2 Giri 6.5, 3 Nepomniachtchi 6, 4 Ding 6, 5 Anand 6, 6 Radjabov 5, 7 Vidit 5, 8 Fedoseev 4.5, 9 Shankland 4.5, 10 Rapport 4.5, 11 Duda 4.5, 12 Van Foreest 4, 13 Mamedyarov 4, 14 Kramnik 2.5.
