81st Tata Steel Chess Tournament 2019 (8)

Carlsen and Anand share the lead after Tata Steel Masters Round 8

Carlsen and Anand share the lead after Tata Steel Masters Round 8 6 time winner Magnus Carlsen and 5 time winner Viswanathan Anand share the lead in the Tata Steel Masters going into the second rest day.

Magnus Carlsen scored a regulation win against Richard Rapport where he steadily outplayed his opponent on the white side of a Sicilian. Viswanathan Anand beat Shakhriyar Mamedyarov after being allowed to play a hidden tactic. 19...b6? (19...h5 threatening something or 19...Qc7 taking the tactic off were good alternatives) 20.c4! was a break white couldn't be allowed to make, after 20...Rxc4 21.Rxd5! black's position had disintegrated.

After a slow start Vladimir Fedoseev is starting to show why he go an invitation to the tournament. He nicely outplayed Sam Shankland. Jan-Krzysztof Duda beat a horribly misfiring Vladimir Kramnik. Kramnik was doing fine out of the opening but went very aggressive and he just doesn't seem to be calculating very much, 17...h3? was a poor move but it wasn't really punished (say by 20.Kh1), positively Kramnik's last chance was 26...Kg7 after he didn't find that he was busted.

The remaining games were drawn Ding Liren-Nepomniachtchi and Van Foreest-Radjabov were short draws. Vidit-Giri saw white simplify quickly.

Rest day Monday 21st January 2019.
