Magnus Carlsen secured a comfortable draw against Wesley So to be certain of a lead going into the final round of the Tata Steel Masters. Carlsen's opponent Wesley So wasn't precise in the opening and once he realised this he played to equalise. Carlsen wasn't sure if he should have tried harder but wasn't unhappy with a draw with the black pieces.

Loek van Wely went wrong in the Najdorf Sicilian quite quickly against Fabiano Caruana. Although Van Wely held his position together for a while and even came close to equalisation but once he missed a move from his opponent his position collapsed.

Ding Liren defeated Pavel Eljanov to give himself a chance of tournament victory with a win with black against Magnus Carlsen in the final round. Eljanov got himself into difficulties where there wasn't an obvious plan, most probably after 15...h6 and gave up a pawn to free himself but Ding brought home the point confidently.

Michael Adams got a slight advantage with black against Hou Yifan but had to be satisfied with a draw by repetition after the first time control. Wei Yi played a rare variation of the Breyer Variation against Shakhriyar Mamedyarov but couldn't make much of the small edge he eventually obtained. Anish Giri didn't have much trouble meeting Sergey Karjakin's 1.b3 surprise but the game didn't depart much from equality.
